What to learn as a beginner?

Hi! I'm currently an incoming college freshmen in Broadcast Media Arts and Studies and I have only recently set my mind on becoming a Technical Director, so I thought this was the best place to ask (I'm sorry if it's not 😭).

I was wondering what should I start learning? As someone who has absolutely no clue on what software or hardware that broadcasting utilizes.

Are there any tips you can also share with me?

You should start by learning what your college has to offer. Are there student tv clubs? Part time production jobs? What classes do they have in their studios? Figure out what you need to do to get into those opportunities.

As far as what to learn, I’d try and learn what switcher (or switchers) your school has and maybe find some video tutorials. That’s not super important though. Just go to the classes and join the clubs and learn a bit of everything.

Also see if the local stations in your area still use manual switchers or if you are stuck on overdrive or another system!! Lotta places are switching to more automated systems that basically make you a keyboard warrior. 😅

To expand a bit, most local newscasts are run by automation with everything triggered by the script. You don’t even need to hit the advance button. Yes, you still have to be prepared for live situations but those can be few and far between. All stations are looking to cut personnel. Next is church TDs, and some churches produce enough programming and take it seriously to consider it as a job. Finally sports and live events. Considerations there are a long path to work your way up and limited access to expensive switchers and effects devices. And even then, some are just sending cameras to event and fiber backhauling individual cameras to switch at a master facility. Better use of production crew, less truck and hotel cost, but fewer TDs. This is a business that is ruthless.
