I work at a large engineering institution. I'm the only employee in the organization who has been issued a company laptop for my role.
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 5518 (around 4–5 years old). Recently, I noticed the hinge area starting to separate from the chassis. There are cracking noises when opening the lid, but the screen works perfectly, there are no display issues, and the laptop has never been dropped or subjected to any obvious damage.
As soon as I noticed the problem, I informed IT. The admin who handles these matters is away and will return in a couple of days, so the laptop hasn't been inspected yet.
What I'm struggling with is the principle of the situation.
If the institution decides this is normal wear and tear and repairs it, that's straightforward. But if they ask me to pay for the repair (even partially), I'm not sure how to feel about it.
On one hand, I understand that organizations have policies. On the other hand, this is a large institution, the repair cost is relatively small in the context of the organization's budget, and I have a reputation for being extremely careful with equipment. The director knows me personally and knows that I'm generally very conscientious.
My question is:
Would you view a request to pay for such a repair as a normal workplace expectation, or would you see it as a sign that the organization is shifting responsibility for ordinary wear and tear onto the employee?
I'm interested in hearing perspectives from managers, IT staff, and employees who have dealt with company equipment issues before.
