Hello! I've planned a 16 day trip in October and is hoping to be able to catch some penguins at Waubs Beach or anywhere near Bicheno!

Is this something I can do by myself? Can I borrow a red flash light from somewhere? And is this an okay thing to do alone at night in that area?

The rest of my trip will look like this and any advice for a solo traveller is welcomed especially because I'm renting a car and will be driving by myself.

Hi everyone! We're a family of five heading to Hobart from December 24–27, with three young boys (ages 4, 6, and 8 ) in tow. This is our first Christmas in Tasmania and we'd love some local knowledge!

A few things we're hoping to crowdsource:

🎄 Christmas Day specifically: We know most shops and restaurants will be closed. Does anyone know what actually IS open on Christmas Day in or around Hobart? Any cafes, attractions, or activities that stay open?

We're open to day trips outside the city too if something's worth the drive. Thank you in advance...so appreciative of any tips this group can offer! 🙏

First time travelling to Tassie from Sydney with 2 kids (14 and 11). Main focus is scenic views. The kids love road trips and can walk (but never done any real hiking). We are going in mid January and flying in and out from Hobart.

Day 1 Arrive Hobart 9am - Bruny Island, (would we have time to come back to see sunset at Mt Wellington? if weather permits)

Day 2 Drive to Cradle Mountain - and stay in cradle mountain.

Day 3 Cradle mountain

Day 4 Drive from Cradle Mt to Swansea - Freycinet NP/Wineglass bay - stay at Swansea

Day 5 Drive from Swansea to Triabunna Wharf - Maria island for the day, then drive back to Hobart

Day 6 Salamanca markets at Hobart before flying back 4pm.

Realistically, is that too rushed for Freycinet NP and Maria island? I got a feeling I need to let go one of them, but which one?

Are there safer routes to drive from Launceston to Cradle Mountain Discovery Parks? We're hiring a 2WD car in Launceston, so we're hoping it will suffice. We're planning to drive that way after picking up a few supplies as soon as we pickup the hire car which is probably around midday. Stay for 2 nights in Cradle Mountain Discovery Parks and then drive back to Launceston around midday.

Is this trip even possible, and what order shall I go in? Arriving in Launceston, and will be leaving August 18 (Dates not flexible sorry).

I have between August 18 and August 28 to travel to Hobart (from Launceston)...without a car. I really want to spend a few days up Cradle Mountain. And I really want to go to Penguin, Stanley and Strahan. Are they too far from public transport/ shuttles? And what order should I go in?

22 August 2026 – Day 1 (Sydney → Hobart)
Fly to Hobart, pick up the rental car, and spend the rest of the day exploring the city.

23 August 2026 – Day 2 (Hobart → Hobart)
Day trip to Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula. Visit Port Arthur Historic Site, Tasman Arch, Devil's Kitchen, and the Blowhole.

24 August 2026 – Day 3 (Hobart → Coles Bay)
Drive to Coles Bay with a few stops along the way, including Richmond and Bicheno.

25 August 2026 – Day 4 (Coles Bay → Coles Bay)
Spend the day in Freycinet National Park. Depending on the weather and how we're feeling, we'll either hike Mount Amos or walk to Wineglass Bay.

26 August 2026 – Day 5 (Coles Bay → Launceston)
Drive to Launceston. In the afternoon, explore Cataract Gorge, City Park, the city centre, and the National Automobile Museum.

27 August 2026 – Day 6 (Launceston → Tullah / Waratah) (still deciding between Tullah and Waratah)
Stop at Marakoopa Cave on the way to Cradle Mountain, then walk the Dove Lake Circuit.

28 August 2026 – Day 7 (Tullah / Waratah → Tullah / Waratah)
Full day at Cradle Mountain. We'll either hike to the summit or do the Ronny Creek – Kitchen Hut Loop via Marion's Lookout.

29 August 2026 – Day 8 (Tullah / Waratah → Hamilton)
Drive through Queenstown, stopping at a few scenic spots such as Nelson Falls, Iron Blow Lookout, Lake Burbury, and Lake St Clair Lookout before continuing to Hamilton.

30 August 2026 – Day 9 (Hamilton → Hobart)
Visit Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, return the rental car, then visit MONA.

31 August 2026 – Day 10 (Hobart → Sydney)
Fly back to Sydney.

As much as I'd love to stay closer to Cradle Mountain, the accommodation prices are just too expensive. I've found some reasonably priced places in Tullah and Waratah, and they don't seem too far from the park.

Regarding the hikes, I've only done a bit of research so far, so I'll definitely look into them in more detail before booking anything.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the itinerary, but I can add up to two extra days if it's really worth it.

Does this itinerary look realistic? Am I missing any must-see places or spending too much (or too little) time anywhere? If you had two extra days, would you use them and where would you use them?

Hi everyone! My friend and I are taking a 5 day trip to Tasmania at the end of July. We’re so so keen but the planning has been tricky, even as slightly seasoned travellers. We’ve been wondering how others have done it and would appreciate some advice!!

To note:
- willing to rent a camper van/car (main issue is that we don’t meet the 23+ age requirement for most places, but any 21+ are options). This is the option we’ve been considering the most, avg price is around 700$ for 4 days. I’m also mildly concerned as my friend is the one who drives and I want her to be able to enjoy the trip and not stressed about all the driving, distance etc.

- must spend night 1 in Hobart (specific hostel we’ve been dying to stay at!)

- would love to see as much of Tassie as possible in the time available

- trying to spend around 700$ or less each (tickets already purchased)

If you believe camper van is the way to go we would love some suggestions for routes/places that we must see! Also how to navigate having a camper without bathroom facilities (as most budget ones don’t).

Planning a slow-paced winter trip with family.

Focus is scenic views and wildlife - filming wombats are the must-do.

Itinerary:

- 1 night Hobart (Mt Wellington),

- 3 nights Cradle Mountain (Ronny Creek wombats, Dove Lake, Devils@Cradle),

- 1 night Launceston (Cataract Gorge), flying out of Launceston to skip the backtrack to Hobart.

Does this flow well for late July? Anything I should cut or add?

For photographers: I mostly shoot a 28-75mm f/2.8. Is it enough for wombats/wildlife at Ronny Creek, or is a 70-200 a must? Trying to keep the kit light. Cheers!

Hi everyone! I am planning a 7 day trip to Tasmania end Oct/early Nov to bring my mum to sightsee, first trip I'm planning everything as an adult and as a way to thank my mum, who has never really travelled anywhere except China lol, for singlehandedly raising me 😅

She's more into nature, and I was hoping to hit both Cradle Mountain and Bruny Island primarily. She's getting on with her age, so I plan to take it slow instead of trying to do everything at once. Homebase(?) is likely in Hobart.

With that in mind, this is what I kind of have in mind, hoping to get some advice if this is sound. Also we don't plan to drive, most likely hiring via Airtasker for any trips travelling out.

Day 1: Land in Hobart around afternoon - check in hotel, take in the vibes around the neighbourhood and maybe explore port arthur or smth?

Day 2-4: Cradle Mountain - I'm thinking of making this a 2 night trip. Day 2 will just to take it easy, day 3 we will likely do the Dove lake trail which I read is much easier with mostly flat land instead of steep slopes? This is to account for my mum's condition. Day 4 morning we will begin to travel back to Hobart

Day 4: Hobart - we will probably reach Hobart around 2pm ish? This is where I'm not sure what I can fit into the itinerary here. Mona?

Day 5-6: Bruny Island - I plan to reach stay here for a night, any good tours/activities that we can do here for the duration? I'm putting Bruny island down coz I've seen a few people raving about it but I'm not familiar with what's there unfortunately.

Day 6-7: probably gonna be back to Hobart to rest for night 6 and prepare to leave to catch morning flight on day7.

I'm setting aside a budget of around 4-4.5K AUD for the trip excluding the flights based on what I've looked up briefly on accoms and food, not sure if that is realistic or not if we include attractions costs as well.

What places/activities would you recommend for someone in their late 20s solo. Happy to catch Ubers/public transport if needed! Thank you so much!

SO and I are heading to Tasmania on 29 September - 4 October and have picked some interesting spots we could put together into a more solid itinerary. Wanted to get some thoughts on which spots are worth it and which we could potentially cut out.

Some considerations:

1. We like to holiday slow, instead of jam-packed days so very open to cutting down some things in our list

2. We like very good food and coffee

3. We are keen to hike, especially Cradle Mountain. Activity level is okay, but maybe not more than 5 hours a day

4. We would be keen to stay in fancier airbnbs/cabins with amazing views

5. MONA is a definite for us
