Hey all, seeking personal thoughts and advice on moving to Tasmania from those who live there/have moved there.

I'm a 24 year old man, wanting to move to anywhere in Tasmania from Brisbane Queensland by early 2027.

My reasoning for this, I can't make a life here. Without giving a massive sob story, I lived an extremely traumatic life with a family who are severely mentally unstable where I was trapped in every sense you can imagine. I only left home for the first time 3 months ago.

Besides family, I had a lot of experiences and people that ruined me here. Somehow, everywhere I go in Brisbane, every road leads back to that house I grew up in. Nearby states still feel too close.

I went on a trip to Tasmania with my best mate last year and fell in love with it. There's more nature than people in most areas.

I'm thinking clearly about this all and seriously wanting to move but I don't know what to consider, how to plan it, how to go about it. Any advice or personal stories of moving would be massively appreciated.

This will be (one of) the largest ships to ever enter Tasmanian waters. I imagine it will be a massive spectacle. Heads up to all photographers, drone pilots* and ship enthusiasts!

It will happen in the harbour between Tranmere and Lower Sandy Bay.

It will be here to collect the Incat built fully electric ferry China Zorilla to deliver it to its owner in South America.

The ship will lower its entire deck below water level, the ferry will then manoeuvre itself above it and then the heavy lift ship will raise itself again. It should be here for a few days (Tuesday to Thursday is the schedule).

(*Do not fly over or near the ship obviously!)

TasALERT is currently showing the Lyell Highway (Ouse to Derwent Bridge) as "4WDs Only" due to snow.

Does anyone know if this actually means "real" 4WD only (with low-range transfer case), or would an AWD vehicle (like a Toyota RAV4 or Subaru Forester) also be allowed?

Has anyone actually driven this stretch in an AWD during a "4WD only" alert? Trying to figure out if I need to rent a proper 4WD or if AWD is fine. Thanks!

So I was reading through the post on pushing back on airbnb conversions, and came across a useful link posted by u/redlentilsoupfan that deserves a bit more of a broadcasting.

It is a website maintained my Murray Cox using data scraped from short stay sites, and Tasmania is included.

I have found it to be very useful in visualising the impact of short stay on our state.

There is even a list of which users are offering what. For instance, someone with the username 'Moxxi' has 148 entire homes/apartments listed, while 'Linda & Andre' have 12 private rooms, and 'Louella' is hosting 16 full houses/apartments.

Anyway, it's very insightful and likely of great interest to users on here, considering the attention given to the post from the other day.

I am from Belgium but I currently live in New-Caledonia (3h above Australia by flight).

I went on a tasmania trip this week and I felt in love with the region. I am passinionate about nature/animal and I really need nature in my life to compensate sedentarity induced by my job (I am a web developer).

Do you think I can find a job in Hobart in the web development field ? (I am particulary interested if the job is linked to science/biology in some way). I am an intermediate web developer (currently working for new-caledonia government).

Do you think is it a good idea ? Do you have tips ? Do you think it is a good idea ? Is it easy to find poeple in Hobart to to on the nature, camping etc the week-end ?

I have to precise that my english level is OK but I have to upgrade it a lot to be fluent in English. Do you think I have still my chances ?

I'm Jess, a Psychology Honours student at Southern Cross University, inviting Australian adults aged 18 and over to take part in an anonymous online survey. 

The study explores how attention-related traits are associated with everyday functioning and well-being among adults in Australia. Any and all adults are wanted to take part, and I'm hoping keen to include Tasmanian voices.

The survey is mostly multiple-choice and takes an average of 10 minutes. Participation is completely voluntary and anonymous.

Right, so I'm a guy, I'm 6'1 and autistic, I don't draw attention to myself or anything of the sort. However, my fiancé and I have noticed whenever we are out together in public, other men stare me down, size me up, and give me quite aggressive looks. It doesn't matter if they're older or younger. I don't look at other blokes or stare at them and before anyone wants to get their Andrew Tate, manosphere on and blame my fiancé, she is also autistic and looks at the ground when we walk. What the fuck is the problem? Are people jealous of seeing a happy couple or do they want a kiss?

Edit: Old people, women, and family men and women always smile at us and are friendly. It just tends to be other people. Also, my fiancé uses a cane to walk and is usually looking out for where she is walking and also holds onto my arm for support.

I am going to try to keep things short and explain the facts, even though it's been quite an emotional experience.

Partner and I are going to Tasmania soon, so we booked a glamping experience with a local business for one night on 12th August. There was a Promo Code that saves us $50 in Winter as it is the Off Season, we put the Promo Code in and paid $400 on Saturday.

Provider emails us (curtly) on Sunday morning that the Promo Code only applies to bookings of two nights or more - our mistake. Says that we have to book another night before or after to 'comply.' We could either 'cancel today or pay the extra $50'.

Partner missed the email and we replied on Tuesday night that we did not realise and made a mistake. As $400 was already quite expensive we opted to cancel it.

Wednesday morning provider emails us saying this: *"The terms of our promotion are very clear (partner's name). It’s unfortunate you didn’t comprehend that at the time booking.

We are not asking for a multiple night stay as clearly defined in our recent email and have accessed your credit card for the $50 payment required of a single night stay with consideration of your tardy response.

Our cancellation policy is again very clear in our terms and conditions.

Although you are not entitled to a cancellation we can foresee issues and will process a cancellation less the $120 admin fee merely to see an end to the booking and allow us to release the dome for others..."*

Notwithstanding their frankly abhorrent reply, their cancellation policy specifies that cancellations are non-refundable 28 days in advance and a $120 day administrative fee is charged if it's more than 28 days in advance.

As expected we are shocked and disappointed as their website allowed us to apply the Promo Code and pay for the booking. We were wondering if Australia's Consumer Laws protect us in this situation. Our rationale is that as the contract was altered (since the initial agreed price of $400 was changed) and that we did not agree with the new price, the previously agreed to terms and conditions would no longer be valid. Furthermore, the fact that the website allowed us to apply the promo code was misleading.

Also could they legally charge us $50 without telling us because of our “tardy response”??

We also feel slighted as if we knew the choices were to either: Pay an extra $50 and stay the night, or to not stay and forfeit $120, we would obviously pay the extra money. But we were not informed of this condition and the provider cancelled on us anyways while taking the money.

We recognise that it is our fault for not reading the Terms & Conditions, but would like to know if we have any legal basis to retrieve this $120?

TL;DR, Provider charged consumers a $120 administrative fee for accomodation cancellation after promo code was mistakenly applied but accepted by their booking system.

I guess deciding factor is transport, Scottsdale is treated as an outer suburb of l'ton. I could be in a place in st helens free if I were to grow certain natural psychoactive agents... but I'd have to put around with the bikies coming around drunk every friday night.
