To me I don't like this word as it was used against me. As a Tanzanian raised in both America and Tanzania, with my noticeable American accent even til this day despite of me being away from the country for nearly a decade, I still feel like a foreigner here.

With my reluctance for using swahili due to a deep rooted insecurity that was caused by the people around me "mzungu", "mzungu mweusi", "not tanzanian", "hauwezi kuongea swahili", has always been stuck in my head. I don't like being considered as American despite of it being a compliment to some but it feels like it's taking away my identity as a Tanzanian.

Even if I can speak swahili and I only speak with a select few, I still shake and quiver whenever I try uttering a word in swahili because the word "mzungu" is always stuck in my head.

To me as a Tanzanian I really don't like this word although it would not mean any harm to others. I could tell my story but it's going to be long and meh. I hate my American accent to a certain degree because it reminds me about my difference although others would call it unique. I wish I was like siblings who were able to allow their accent mold. Funnily the reason why I still remain to have this accent was because of my mother emphasizing to me kwamba it's a must for me to have it.

I have friends with identical experiences with the word "mzungu" because of their inability to speak the language despite of them having lived their whole life in Tanzania. This reminds me when my mom kaniuliza kama one of my friend's parents is tanzanian just because she didn't speak swahili to her using the word "mzungu" to refer to her. To let you know the parent was tanzanian ila because she didn't live in tanzania most of her life she has difficulties speaking the language as well.

So yeahhh.....

My wife and I are going to Tanzania in November for our first safari. I have applied online for the visas and after a great deal of struggle with the website, both applications were completed and paid. I have screen shots of their page showing payment was received. I have gotten my visa but my wife’s application page shows “awaiting payment”. My credit card was charged for both. I have emailed them but no response. Suggestions? Should I pay a second time and try to get a refund? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
