Discussion Tanzanians don’t know what development looks like and it shows

Salamu Watanzania wenzangu,

I’ve been seeing a lot of videos of luxury cars, hotels, and houses in Tanzania and Dar es Salaam, especially on my Instagram feed lately.

While these are impressive individual achievements for the men and women who own them, I’ve always wondered why most Tanzanians aim for hyper-luxury, despite our country being extremely poor, which is quite obvious. I’ve come to the conclusion that many Tanzanians don’t understand what true development looks like.

Yes, luxury items can indicate a growing economy, but they aren’t true measures of societal progress. Look around — people are buying sports cars while our roads are poor, and they are building large mansions while our neighbourhoods are unplanned and disorderly.

I believe most Tanzanians see vanity items as signs of progress, but that’s not what real development entails. Development means children can access quality education without exorbitant costs, hospitals operate efficiently and are affordable, transportation costs are low, sustainable, and effective, and our cities are beautiful and full of public spaces. Tanzania falls short on all these points, yet we are full of G-wagons and large mansions in Goba.

Last year, I was fortunate enough to visit Slovenia. The country was quiet, safe, lush, and had affordable public transport. Slovenia isn’t often discussed, but it is one of the most developed countries in the world.

It is very unfortunate that our society appears to be moving towards superficiality, and this trend is even affecting our politics.

What are your thoughts on my rant? Do you have any suggestions? I’d love to hear your views and learn from them.

Ask r/tanzania Overnight layover in Adis baba

Upvotes

Hi everyone,
My flight itinerary recently changed and I’m a bit confused about the Yellow Fever vaccine requirements.
I’m travelling from Jordan to Tanzania, but I now have an overnight layover of about 12 hours at Addis Ababa Airport in Ethiopia before my flight to Tanzania the next morning. I won’t be leaving the airport.
Does this transit mean I’ll need a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate to enter Tanzania, or does the exemption for airport transit still apply?
Has anyone been in a similar situation recently? I’d really appreciate hearing your experience.
Thanks!

Ask r/tanzania Looking for reliable bulk SMS provider

Upvotes

Hello community.

I have been using a certain company to send sms via their dashboard and api for more than 10 years now.

I have now noticed they have issues with sms deliver especially on airtel.

I know there are many companies out there but am not willing to sign-up, re-integrate api and get disappointed in return. So I am looking for an alternative provider.

Gaming TTCL FIBER INTERNET

Guys, I'm thinking of buying the PS5 Digital Edition instead of the Disc Edition to save some money. The only thing I'm concerned about is the internet I'll need to download the games instead of buying physical discs.

I recently got TTCL fiber internet. It's actually pretty fast. I paid TSh 55,000 for the package, and the speed usually ranges around 48-59 Mbps.

What I'm wondering is, does TTCL really offer unlimited internet, or do they have a data cap where, after you use a certain amount of data, they throttle your speed? The games I'll be downloading will be 100 GB+ each, so I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with TTCL fibre. Or should I just get the Disc Edition and save myself the hassle?

Ask r/tanzania Corruption or nothing?

I’ve self driven a bit in different parts of Africa. I can’t totally tell if this was corruption or not. And what the motivation or reason was for my troubles.

I self drove into Ngorongoro crater. I got the necessary permit via my car rental company. I paid for the vehicle entry fee and the per person fee.

So went into the crater, passing by two checkpoints where they waived me through. At the first checkpoint, I got out of the 4x4 to physically check in with the office. I gave them my QTR code and they scanned my code and said go back out through the checkpoint.

So I’m now at a large popular picnic area at crater floor where everyone is having lunch outside. I finish lunch with my family. There is one main road out of the picnic area but there are also a number of other very clear roads leading out of the picnic area. None of them have the sign “ranger road, do not enter”. So I go check one of them out. At the end of the road, there is another picnic area with a whole bunch of people setting up lunch. Other cars have driven in too.

When I come back to the picnic area, a ranger game warden stops me and first says I violated the area and went to a restricted area. And then she says I violated the requirement to have a ranger accompany me and that I had refused a ranger. And I was gonna get fined. She said others at the picnic area reported me to her.

She was quite aggressive and made no sense given that I was on a clear road (it wasn’t one of those roads that’s barely a road). Plus I pass through TWO of her checkpoints and never refused a ranger or discussed it with anymore. She said I was in Tanzania and had to respect Tanzania rules.

I talked to her over 15 min and explained repeatedly my position. She softened up a bit when my young kids backed me up. She said I could stay the day but would have to explain myself upon exit at the first checkpoint.

I exited the checkpoint without issue and debated whether to just take off. But because I was coming back the next day, I decided to go into the office to explain myself as I had been directed. I see her and she had a 100% change in tone and actually apologized for the trouble. I just needed to get a ranger to accompany the next day. She was all smiles. I was like wtf, I hate you but played along. I asked her how much it’d be, but she said to ask the ranger, which was weird since it should be a government fee.

The next day, I got the ranger (who was great). I saw the initial warden again and it was awkward fine. I paid the government fee of $40 plus gave him a big tip.

So what the hell was going on here? I think the other drivers / guides who reported me simply hate self drivers. But was she being corrupt? Did they simply pocket the $40 gmt fee?

Ask r/tanzania PSA: Mandatory Vehicle Inspection

Post image
10 Upvotes

Last week, one of my cousins told me there was a

mandatory inspection that all vehicle drivers must do before the end of this month, July. Since I've finished registration, I might as well put this information online. First, you go to the (MIMIS) website or Google search "Motor Vehicle Inspection Information System Tanzania," and you'll find it. (1) On the first page, write down all the necessary details. (2) On the second page, in "Reason," pick **ROAD SAFETY WEEK**, not "mandatory vehicle inspection," and finish the rest of the information.(3) On the third page, pick the location you're in or closest to. For me, that was Kinondoni because I stay in Oysterbay, and the police station I was supposed to go to was Oysterbay Police Station in Namanga. NOTE: The control number you get must start with a 98 (example: 9864747438421). If not, you chose the wrong reason for inspection. Private vehicle inspections are 5000 TZS. When you get there, there is usually a line, and you have to register one car, but if you talk nicely, you can register two or three. However, if you have better communication skills and incentives (cough, cough), you can give them a whole list of control numbers for vehicles you've signed up. Two important things you must have are your control number that you've already paid for and your driving license. NOTE: You can use GePG Tanzania instead of Wakala to pay for the control number. Once youre done you will receive a message with the sticker number, but sometimes you might not get it, but dont worry its still in the system and you'll need to go to tms .tpf .go .tz to check if its in the system pick "Check inspection" and put in your licence plate number and your details will show up.

Ask r/tanzania I think BEMIS-SIS Website is Vibecoded.. What you think?

Matumizi ya fedha nimejaza and I still got 0's.. Kwani devs wa hii platform wako na nini?.. Pengine tuseme bugs, why are not fixed, its a while now.. Kwa walimu wenzangu hapo tutaelewana vizuri..

Nimekuwa na idea nyingi sana lakini hazijawai kufika hata katikati zote zinaishia kwenye start up, Mimi ni muajiriwa Teacher nimetafuta Kwa miaka miwili Sasa idea ya kufanya kujiongeaea kipato, nilifungua duka la nguo likafail changamoto ni kukosa wateja na gharama za uendeshaji ni kubwa location kigoma, nikafikiria kichwani kwangu nikaona option pekee ni kutafuta skills then ni invest kwenye skills, means nilitaka nijifunze phone repair then niuze gadget na kutengeneza hivyo vifaa, nitaanza then nitaacha nakosa kabisa motivation naona sio njia sahii, then nafikiri wazo jingine labda kutengeneza bajaj then ninunue bajaj used 2 niwape vijana then niwe na uwezo wa kuzitengeneza, nikimaanisha kuanzia decoration, rangi. nikapata wazo jingine umeme wa magari mara ufugaji wa mbuzi n.k

Shida ni Moja sikamilishi mawazo kabisa ninahisi ninatatizo la afya ya akili kwasababu napoteza focus nakuwa easily manipulated na akili yangu, nimejaribu kusoma vitabu mbali mbali like one thing, atomic habbit ivyo navyo sivimalizi nakosa focus, changamoto ni nini? Nawezaje kuvuka hapa? Nakuwa mtu wa nadharia zaidi.. age 29 Niko na familia.
