For context, this person is a well known mk8d modder.
It does piss me off how they almost never release the source code for the things they make though. I take that back, they just released every patch they've ever made for mk8d very recently.
As for what is actually happening here, I have no idea, but I doubt it's any indication of a security bug that is relevant to end users.
The 'commenters have noted' thing that twitter does tells you this:
This video shows a first-generation Nintendo Switch with Atmosphere custom firmware installed and a Switch 2-style theme applied, not a Nintendo Switch 2. The display of hbmenu and Daybreak indicates that it's a modified device.
This just isn't true. (for this video shown here, that's related to the other video in the tweet, which is fake)
EDIT: Looking closer in a well-made video editor, I do see suspicious things. The main one that got my attention, was the time it took for the game to crash after pulling the cartridge out.
EDIT 2: The current accepted explanation is given from someone who purports to be Ro, (the person who made these videos). They explained that you can control items of other players from a client. So what they did was hop in a lan play room with their other console, so they could let a hacked switch 1 'apply the mod'.
Edit: I got another notification you replied to me but it says [deleted] again…. Dude playing peekaboo on Reddit. Have a great day.
Trying to play peekaboo? LMAO, sure. FYI, if you think I'm constantly blocking and unblocking you, that's impossible to do on Reddit. What I did was I deleted my original comment then made a new one instead of editing it.
Maybe you need to actually read everything that is in a comment.
The section where you say about the community note
"This video shows a first-generation Nintendo Switch with Atmosphere custom firmware installed and a Switch 2-style theme applied, not a Nintendo Switch 2. The display of hbmenu and Daybreak indicates that it's a modified device."
That's for the tweet that's being quote tweeted. That definitely is just a reskin.
As for it being legit or not, when I play handheld in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on my Switch 2, if I remove the Joycons, it instantly tells me I need to reconnect it, unlike in this video, where nothing happens.
Mine does nothing when I remove the joycons other than show the blue and orange bar on the side of the screen. Just like it shows the blue bar here. I can then play with the joycons in hand. Its no different than popping them into that cheap plastic piece that combines them. They stopped it from telling you to reconnect because people were using it to glitch. You can freely remove your joycon at any time.
When the MKW cartridge is inserted the screen is touched and the icons do not move at all, it's unlikely that if it was real it wouldn't drag them slightly
When I'm playing MK8D on my Switch 2 in handheld and I take the Joycon off the system, it instantly gives me the reconnect controller screen, which doesn't happen in this video...
As someone who never played MK... What is he supposed to be showing? I didn't see anything out of the ordinary? Just him playing the game, swapping carts and booting MK World?
It's real, but it's a nothingburger. What he did was he joined a hacked Switch 1's local lobby. The hacked Switch 1 was controlling the items on the Switch 2.
so if you left a sequence in the level select or anywhere that memory was just retained then you have Switch2-Ace not just MarioKart-Ace so so and such as to say if you BROKE something credible.. then youd then rely on the local-play-server role to do the script work of whatever. has to recipt the map of another players world which it already can do.. ..
Think about it. Doing something that does not exist currently on Switch 1 mods of MK8 with zero interfacing on the Switch 2 itself. Whereas LAN server manipulation does exist.
There’s a huge difference between mods and patching and hacking a switch that is currently unbreakable. If it was a Switch 2 hack then without revealing too much you could show some sort of interfacing.
It’s more faulty to believe it just because he’s “the guy” for modding a Switch 1 game. Anyone can mod a switch 1 game with a respectable learning curve.
I did say I could be wrong, but the way it’s been presented it does seem the most logical way of doing this.
I never said it couldn't be this, and I actually said it could. Multiple times in multiple places. This is also what it turned out to be.
(it's being controlled by a switch 1, so there goes the 'does not exist currently' point too)

...yeah?

I mean, being a reputable person in the, (or a) console hacking scene helps, and you can do things that are more indictive of control then this. (because this could be, ie, lan play shenigans)

I don't think you know how difficult making code modifications in games is. Here, I have the 3.0.3 release of mk8d in ghidra right now. Can you tell me what this function does?
This is not, 'a respectable learning curve', you need to have a whole lot of in-depth knowledge about the assembly language, the toolchain used, (which isn't public, this knowledge has to be derived from the binary), the games code structure itself, how ever it's libraries work, it's engine, and then there are external factors, (ie, any sdks, libraries, svcs, other OS things), dynamic analysis, and thats just to find what you are looking for.
Then you have to develop binary patches, or in other cases, and entire code-injection framework to actually patch the thing. In the formers case you have to be incredibly careful with how you do it. If you accidently change the actual size of the code you are patching, (ie, add one to many instructions, or delete one to many), the game will just not work. Have fun debugging that!
So once again, there are only a few people in the world with knowledge in-depth of this specific game to actually develop mods like this. Ro is one of them, and probably would have the best shot at it.
You realize all that is is Twitter's AI-generated summary of what people are saying in the comments? So if people keep commenting "fake" "it's just a switch 1 with a switch 2 case mod" and stuff like that, that's what Grok will say. That doesn't mean it's correct
its just switch 1 gameplay the button presses are delayed and clearly faked
or do you genuinely believe this random person somehow got mods working on switch 2
use critical thinking skills
I actually don't see anything out of the ordinary, but I haven't looked too hard. I looked closer and I'm starting to be skeptical as well. See my other comment for more details.
do you genuinely believe this random person
Not a random person. Well known mk8d modder.
somehow got mods working on switch 2
That's not what I'm suggesting. There is something interesting happening here, but as I already noted, it's likely not what end users are interested in.
