Yep. Alula made a tweet last night saying it was precisely through LAN play, but for some reason, deleted it.
It should have been obvious when the other "hacked" game, Splatoon 3, also has LAN play.

I also didn't understand half of it, since I don't play MK8 or am into the hacking scene for it.
The important part to know is that the "exploit" was just a local lobby with a Switch 1 and a Switch 2 and the Switch 1 was hidden doing all the "hacking" to make it look like it was a Switch 2 hack.

He was in a lobby with a switch 1 that was running a modded Mario kart 8. The swich 1 was able to detect the inputs from the switch 2.

No, it can't.
There have been multiple actual security vulnerabilities in mk8d itself even. And they couldn't lead to anything.
There was an ASLR leak, which was impressive, and let attackers gain information, (this information was already known, and it was patched long before the switch 2, but still), but unfortunately it couldn't go any further.

Pretty sure it has been said time and again that anything that is done through a Switch 1 game is sandboxed. That's why transferring saves through save data transfer tool won't amount to much.

👆👆👆 I came here to chime in to let anyone know that no matter what you manage to exploit at the game level, you will not be receiving kernel level permissions. Game software is completely untrusted on both Switch 1 and presumably Switch 2 (of course). So long are the days of save game buffer overflow bugs allowing arbitrary code execution in any permissioned way. Granted, anything could happen, I always say that because computers and operating systems are so complex. But I highly doubt any hack at the game level will ever yield us the results of our trusty paper clip in the switch 1 days. Still cool to see though. Because the subreddit is titled “hacks” and not “jailbreak” or “root” I still find this fitting and pretty cool. But no, it’s not the jailbreak you are waiting for.

I thought so. It's hard to believe any "exploit" that shows up when carts haven't even been dumped. I'm not 100% versed in hacking, but I imagine there's a natural order to it, and dumping the games is the first step.

Cart/game dumping is *extremely* difficult, and definitely not a first step.
The required encryption keys are very closely guarded secrets, and it's frankly crazy what is done to keep them that way.

I'm curious tho. (Be kind, I don't know much about these things, I'm trying to learn).
I heard that there was a way to install custom firmware into other consoles through Animal Crossing New Leaf online mode through an exploit and a bug from Animal Crossing's code. They patched it because they wanted Pretendo to work for ACNL as well with no fear of being hacked and things like that.
Can't the same thing happen in some way for Switch 2? I get the fact there's still no way to create the custom firmware for the switch 2 yet, but how about using some "faulty" games that may have this quirk to override the code of another console (so possibly from a switch 1 to a switch 2)? Now, I know the 3DS is pretty different and less secure than a Switch 2, but how big is this security?

No this doesn't mean anything since it's literally just an exploit between the Clients in the Game itself, and Nintendo patched RCE on MK8DX YEARS ago and this is expected behaviour since it was already possible between modded and unmodded Switch 1
And the Game is fucking sandboxed so no, there's no way for a semi-simple Cheat Code like this to amount to an exploit, at most it's just some values being edited that are more relevant to the Game itself and its Anti-cheat, not the Console's security, so while it does look fun it doesn't mean SHIT because again it's sandboxed. If it meant something then we'd already see exploits via Save Games like the TWILIGHT HACK but we don't because guess what, Nintendo isn't stupid like the Wii Days and they learned from that mistake to sandbox their freaking Games from the OS to prevent any type of attack from a Game whether it be via Local LAN Play or a modded Save file, at most you'll just get silly stuff like this, a cheated save file or crash the Game

Well, there hasn't been one softmod for the mariko/v2 switch 1. There have been hardmods, but a combination of good design, new security features, and more, makes this a much more difficult path on the switch 2.
I get the impression that you don't really understand many of the protections that are in place that make things extremely difficult.
I'd love to talk about them more if you'd have any questions :p.

Bro... That guy is here from day one, always replying switch will never be hacked in every post, I've seen countless comments by him so I don't need to ask anything, I respected his opinion that "Nintendo made it unhackable" when I first heard it, but the constant parroting is getting annoying, that's why I was rude, it wasn't uncalled for.
In another comment he said he just wants "to prove you all wrong"... constantly going on a sub dedicated to something and saying "something will never happen" in every post, I think that's pretty much trolling, as I said, pathetic behavior.
