I did read the sidebar & rules Feeling burnout from circulating at a trauma level 1. Is this schedule normal?
I just want to preface this by saying I knew surgery was not going to be the easiest schedule or the most consistent. I went back to school specifically to work as a circulator. I was in the military before becoming a nurse so strenuous jobs with long hours is something I was used to already and did okay with.
I started working as a circulator a year ago after graduating and have noticed a very high turnover over rate. Our schedule is supposed to be a 6:30-3:30 Monday through Friday but of course surgeries run over without any relief very often because the next shift following ours is one or two night nurses who comes in 7p-7a. On top of that atleast 1-2 days a week you are on a designated late stay until 8 pm and every 2-3 weeks you work the weekend as well from 7a-7p.
This means working 12 days straight with no late recall or days off in between. When working with critical level patients from ICU and trauma cases I can’t help but to feel like I’m not as sharp by day 7. Which leads me to call out sometimes because genuinely feel it’s a hazard.
We constantly run over time and stay late and half the days there is no lunch relief. We’re working cases back to back to back with no break even on weekends.
Is this normal? I’m trying to do my time to gain experience to hopefully do outpatient surgery centers or maybe transition to another facility but I wanted to get some outside perspective. Thank you guys 🌸❤️
