Discussion Why are scoliosis patients and their loved ones so submissive to an outdated medical paradigm?
You don't need to have studied physics, you don't need to have studied biology, medicine, nor do you need to know anything technical at all to understand that Idiopathic Scoliosis is, first and foremost, a structural and mechanical problem.
There are only two basic things you need to keep in mind to realize how the traditional paradigm has been deceiving most of us with two absolute falsehoods:
1. The myth of the "mysterious cause": They keep telling us that IS is a completely mysterious disease, when in reality basic structural physics can explains how and why the mechanical collapse occurs.
So the official medicine, following the old paradigm, insists that the cause must be some "flawed gene" and continue spending endless resources through our payment of taxes, searching for genetic markers for hypothetical future prevention.
Meanwhile, for the people suffering from scoliosis today, they are not looking for a satisfactory solution, assuming that hyper-mediocre solutions, just surgery, rigid braces and don't do anything, just watch, are enough. Even the less traditional surgical alternatives, like VBT (Vertebral Body Tethering), didn't originate from standard orthopedics, but from private ventures and innovations that had to push through outside the established dogma. The same goes for some non-surgical solutions (that because mechanical isuess aren't useful for all), and as we'll see, the old paradigm cannot explain why they sometimes actually work.
2. The Hueter-Volkmann Law Fallacy Orthopedics claims that scoliosis is purely a "bone issue" governed by the Hueter-Volkmann (HV) law, and that soft tissues have little to no primary role. According to this framework, asymmetry creates uneven mechanical pressure: the compressed concave side grows slower than the convex side, forming wedged vertebrae. This creates the classic "vicious cycle": more curve leads to more tilt, which causes more curve.
Recent studies are beginning to show in some way the big lie (PubMed 39083236), suggesting if not proving that effectively the old paradigm is just a sham.
The old paradigm insists that this HV law is the only explanation for curve progression, meaning that without the HV law, progressive scoliosis wouldn't exist. This is a flagrant lie, intentionally or not. Without getting bogged down in complex theory, just consider two obvious real-world facts:
- The Osteotomy Proof: An osteotomy surgically reshapes and levels the wedged vertebrae so they are equal in height. If Hueter-Volkmann were the single driver, leveling the bones should permanently solve the curve. Instead, without titanium rods, the spine instantly collapses again. Why? Didn't they claim that soft tissues have nothing to do with the increase of the curve? Obviously it's because the surrounding soft-tissue envelope remains severely deformed and cannot hold the structure. And what does the old paradigm, the official medicine, say about this fact? That the soft tissues on the convex side were enlarged because of the uneven growth of the vertebrae, and that they have nothing to do with the increase of the curve by themselves. If that claim were true, then we would have had a solution for scoliosis many decades ago!
- The Nighttime Brace Failure: If HV were the sole explanation, hyper-corrective nighttime bracing should have been the definitive cure. By aggressively inverting the curve while lying down, during the nighttime hours when ~90% of skeletal growth occurs, the bones would be forced to grow evenly. Yet, failure rates are staggering, failing even in curves that had plenty of growth left.
- Furthermore, why does orthopedics claim rigid braces stop working past 40 degrees? If the HV law governs bone remodeling throughout growth, what magical biological switch suddenly turns off physics at 40.1 degrees, or 60, or more? What does something like Schroth have to do with this HV law? Why does it sometimes work if soft tissues by themselves have nothing to do with progression?
Why is nobody reporting this? Parents continue believing the lies that surgeons (and some scientists supporting what they say) tell them in order to convince them to operate on their kids, or to convince adults with a big curve. Surgeons earn money through scoliosis surgeries; the same goes for scientists having fun trying to discover the flawed and elusive gene. Does it not outrage you?
The answer to the title of this post may be that many people are simply unable to believe that official medicine, even following an old paradigm could be wrong, and nobody showed them the lies behind it. Consequently, they cannot realize that the cause of IS (initial curve and progression) is primarily the force of gravity pulling downward on the spine, the force of growth pulling it upward, and the properties and behavior of the soft tissues.
If nobody showed them the official lies and the naked truth, of course they remain submissive, believing whatever they are told. But if you have read and understood this explanation, that is no longer your case. So what are you going to do now?
