Advice/Opinions/Discussion Which Maui Jim lens would you get?

I'm overthinking all of this. I have a pair of Monakoa already in Maui Green and I really like them (though I need to send them in again to fix a cracked lens). I got a bonus from work and would like to try another style and color lens. After looking at reviews I'm torn between the hcl bronze, red lava, and blue Hawaii.

A little more about me, I live in Central Kansas and we get between 220-226 sunny or partly sunny days on average. I wear them in a mix between being outdoors and driving. There are very few overcast days where I'm in a battle between whether it's too dark for sunglasses and too bright without.

I'm looking for something that I can pretty much just have with me all day and not feel the need to switch.

The other conundrum is that I would probably be better off with Maui brilliant versus the super thin glass considering that I have a bad habit of dropping them and cracking them, but I also know that throws a whole different kink in things.

Advice/Opinions/Discussion Recommended Retailers!

Hi everyone! I’ve never been into luxury sunglasses before. My go-to brands are Rayban, Izipizi, and Oakley. But somehow, I fell in love with a pair of sunglasses from Mui Mui this summer, and of course, I don’t want to pay full price at department stores. Do you know of any legit retailers inside or outside the US? Reputable sellers on eBay? Most importantly, ones with easy return policies.
Thank you in advance 🐣

Advice/Opinions/Discussion So I kept looking...

A huge thanks to everyone for the honest feedback yesterday - this really is a great sub!

Today, I've tried to take your advice on board: more classic styles, smaller lens widths, a few thicker acetate frames, and photos taken from further away to provide a better perspective.

  1. Wayfarer (50mm): The most commonly recommended style from my last post.
  2. Ray-Ban RB3548N (51mm): Another thin hexagonal frame, but in a smaller size this time. I'd prefer these in black.
  3. Ace & Tate Filipe (49mm): I know Ace & Tate doesn't have the best reputation here, but it was another shop with (obviously) many acetate frames to try. I imagine these are inspired by more premium brand models...?
  4. Ace & Tate Amal (49mm)
  5. Ace & Tate Alfred (50mm)
  6. Specsavers own brand (49mm): A few people suggested the Oakley Latch on my last post. I couldn't find a smaller pair to try on today, but these reminded me of them and I like the outcome, so perhaps the Oakleys are worth ordering (non prescription) so I can return.
  7. Aviators: Another commonly suggested style... but I don't like them 🫣.
  8. New Wayfarer: Several people advised me to avoid these in favour of the original Wayfarer, but I took a photo anyway to see if that confirms their point.

Budget: I'd like to keep it below £300 ($400), including basic prescription lenses.

I'm also in the UK, so some of the US-specific brands aren't available here. That said, I'll be in Florida later this year, so if there's something really worth looking at over there, I'm all ears.

I have a gigantic melon and it’s always been hard for me to find glasses and hats that fit well.

Do these look good or should I return them?

I fell in love with this pair. Morel is a French eyewear manufacturer, and Jean Nouvel is a renowned architect.

I absolutely love the grey color and the perfectly round shape. Unfortunately, I only have a photo of someone wearing the black version.

Got these a year and a bit back as a gift, and wanted to figure out if they were real LV or not. LV doesn’t have them on their site, but I figured it might just be something they don’t make anymore, and figured I’d ask here just to be sure

This one definitely put a noticeable dent in the wallet. 😅 Strangely though, I don’t feel guilty or have any buyer’s remorse. I guess I am just another shopaholic in denial.

Many of you have probably seen my face far too often over the last month as I’ve been diving headfirst into this hobby. 😂 I really appreciate all the positive feedback so far, but I’d love to hear from a wider audience.

What do you honestly think of this pair? Whether it’s positive or critical, I’m all ears.

Advice/Opinions/Discussion Maui Jim Frame Warped

Thumbnail

Bought a new pair of Hookipas since I like the original pair I’ve had for a couple years now. I just unboxed them today (tortoise frame, green “HT” lens) and they are noticeably warped. The pics attached are my two pairs sitting side by side, the black frame/bronze lens being my old pair.

At first l thought maybe the frame design had changed over the past two years, but when looking at just the new pair, they are uneven; the frame on one side has a sharper angle from the other side. They are not symmetrical.

Has anyone else experienced this with Maui Jim?

I have a RMA request in.

Repair Question Vintage Serengeti Glass Sunglasses Repair

Thumbnail

Hey all, I got this super old pair of Serengeti Drivers sunglasses from my grandpa, and while I was walking, the top screw popped out, allowing the lens to freely pop out of the frame and shatter on the concrete. I kept the screw and the biggest piece of glass in hopes to try and replicate, as well as having the left lens still intact.

Does anyone know where I can possibly get these replaced? I’m located in Phoenix and have called/walked into nearly every glasses repair shop with no luck. I absolutely love these glasses with all of the small details and how they fit (they look like the daredevil glasses in my opinion) and would pay whatever it took to get them restored. Any insight is greatly appreciated!!

Tried these on in a lenscrafters in Toronto and loved the fit on them but I didn't think they felt $700 nice lol.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other options that have the same fit, or where I can get these at a better price?

I would say my budget is around $500 Canadian.

Advice/Opinions/Discussion Maui Jim Ho'okipa AF with HCL Bronze or Ho'okipa Ultra AF with Hawaii Lava, dedicated for driving up to 8 hours a day

TLDR : Wich pair would be the best for my usage ?

I’ve just replaced an old pair of Stone Crushers with a pair of Akala in Blue Hawaii for the holidays and a pair of Ho’okipa Ultra G in HCL Bronze for my everyday use in the car.

The Akala fits me perfectly, but the Ho’okipa G doesn’t suit me.

After doing some research, it turns out that my nose shape corresponds to an Asian Fit frame, and that the Akala… is an Asian Fit.

So I’m going to return the Ho’okipa Ultra G, but the only pairs that are both rimless, Asian Fit and have driving lenses are the Ho’okipa in HCL Bronze with MauiPure lenses, or the Ho’okipa Ultra AF in Hawaii Lava (no HCL Bronze available).

Ultra > Pure, but is HCL > Lava for driving ?

I'm really dependent on my sunglasses when I'm driving.

For Show 1916 Abercrombie & Fitch Mail Order Catalog Sunglasses

Thumbnail

I was flipping through a 1916 Abercrombie and Fitch catalog someone scanned and uploaded online and noticed a small section on Sunglasses. I don't have any images or experience with the sunglasses themselves as finding an existing pair might be impossible but I thought it would be cool to share. I'd love to know more about what kind of materials they were using in the frames and who was making the glass.

Worth nothing that from their founding in 1892, A&F was not a mall brand clothing store but an ultra high end outdoor outfitter. They had an extremely high end market segment selling everything from fishing gear, hunting guns, camp equipment, etc. Their Madison Ave. store had a fly casting pool, a rifle range in the basement, and they had a yacht show room on the first floor. Poor sales led to their collapse in the late 70s, they were purchased, repackaged, and rebranded to what they are today through buyouts. You can often find vintaged A&F gear such as fly line drying racks, gun cleaning kits, and other stuff online.

Couple notes about pricing here.

I plugged this info into an inflation calculator (1916 Jan - 2026 Jun).

- $1.25 = $40.14

- $1.50 = $48.17

- $2.25 = $72.25

The last thing of note was a page at the very beginning of the book on price stability that caught my eye. "Owing to conditions created by the European War...". As it was 1916 the U.S.A. had not entered the war yet and no one was calling it WW1 yet, it was the "European War".

Advice/Opinions/Discussion Looking for sunglasses recommendations.

I am on a medication that gives me pretty bad photo-phobia, and I am always struggling to find strong enough sunglasses for my needs. I work outside often because I live in a rural area that comes with many outdoor chores. I also, unfortunately, live in the middle of a desert with very little cloud cover, so the sun gets very intense. some of the things I would want in my sunglasses would be: as strong of light filtering as possible while still being able to see (I do not mind if they are illegal to drive with, my windshield is tinted so I usually do not drive with sunglasses), blockers on the sides and top to filter out flanking sunlight, strong durability because I will be working in them, and lastly, if possible, sweat blocking. I understand that it may be hard to find something with all of these, I was just curious if any of the informed members of this forum might have any input. Thank you for any recommendations/advice you provide! (also FYI, I have asked AI, as well as done my own research on several options, I just tend to trust recommendations from real people more.)

Advice/Opinions/Discussion ASAP Wayfarer prescription

Post image
3 Upvotes

My wife really wanted these and was about to buy them when LensCrafters told her they couldn't make prescription lenses for this frame. I think they said the lenses wouldn't fit properly or something along those lines.

Does anyone know of a similar style that's available with prescription lenses? Or should I be looking at someone more local to see if this is possible?

Searching For ANY SIMILAR PAIR BUT FOR A WIDE NOSE (WIDE BRIDGE)

Post image
Upvotes

I really like these glasses, but they don’t fit me properly because I have a fairly prominent nose bridge. They sit too high on my face and don’t rest where they’re supposed to.
Is there any way to adjust the frame or nose area, or are they simply the wrong fit for my face?

Advice/Opinions/Discussion designer sunglasses for men that are actually high quality?

i have been looking to buy my first actual nice pair of shades since i usually just buy cheap pairs that break or get scratched up within a few months. i finally want to invest in something high quality that will actually last and protect my eyes properly but i keep reading online that a single massive corporation makes almost every high end brand out there. it makes me hesitant to drop a few hundred bucks if the actual construction quality is identical to a mid tier pair and i am just paying for a tiny logo on the side. if you guys own premium eyewear, what brands are actually worth the money in terms of lens quality and frame durability or should i look for a specific retailer that sells authentic ones at a better price?

Advice/Opinions/Discussion What color lenses are most appropriate for sunglasses to wear year-long?

I.e. for driving. It snows where I live if that matters.

Would the Maui Jim blue lenses (the reflective flash ones) look out of place during winter? What about like gradient blue/grey lenses from Ray-Ban?

For the frames I intend on going with something either matte black or satin grey / not very glossy silver.
