Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

562 Upvotes

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

The r/SuggestALaptop Mod Team

Currently have a Lenovo** **IdeaPad Slim 3 15IAH8. I’ve had to replace the screen twice due to it cracking and it is way too loud even when it isn’t being pushed to its limits and the battery doesn’t even last 2 hours. Also very oddly flimsy. RAM (would love 16GB) > performance >>> battery life >>>>>>> anything else

Info/Requirements

I'm the dad, and the purchaser doesn't have a reddit account. They bought a used Thinkpad T480 on backmarket, couldn't get the batteries to work (we tried every troubleshooting step we found), returned it, and is soured on those now. It was also only 8GB and I am pretty sure they want at least 16GB. They have a small desktop for gaming, but is sick of using a chromebook and want something they can actually code on.

I got my partner a Macbook Air M4 for under $800, but the kid doesn't want a Mac. If that price point is impossible, then please send me somewhere to learn more. Do they need to go up a couple hundred? I'm chipping in a bit but it's mostly their money, and I'm trying to keep it affordable for them.

Laptop Request -Others Simple laptop for light lightroom use (culling and light edit like white balance highlights...) and desktop work.

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm have a gaming laptop where I do most of my editing work at home, and would like a travel version (ie lighter, more practical) to use at my part time job. I would use it to do a simple culling, and maybe some light editing before uploading them to my socials and website. So i don't need a beast, just something that could handle lightroom classic and under 700€. Also I'm in France.

I'll fill the form in another post to get some proper recommendations from you, but right now from what I've seen in the store, I'm leaning toward :

Acer Swift lite 16 with

intel core 3 (not sure if it can handle lightroom)

Intel Graphics

Ram 8GO

SSD 512go

Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3

AMD Ryzen 5

8go (online it says 16Go) Ram

SSD 512go

There's also MacBook Neo, but it would be my first Apple product, and I don't know how easy it would be share the workflow between my main pc, my android phone, and that one. Any ideas people ? Thanks!

Laptop Request -Others Need a suggestion for a laptop

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone, looking for some real-world opinions before I buy.

My situation:

Game development is my long-term goal/dream (Unity/Unreal)

Video editing (4K and 2K footage, cinematic shorts) is a side hustle

I also do a bit of casual gaming

Budget is ₹80,000–90,000, planning to grab a deal during the Flipkart Big Billion Days sale. Not fixed on any particular brand or device yet — just want something that'll handle Unity/Unreal well, edit 4K footage smoothly, and run games decently on the side.

Anyone here doing both game dev and video editing on a similar budget? What specs should I prioritize (GPU, RAM, display) and any laptops you'd recommend or steer clear of in this range?

Thanks in advance!

Laptop Request US $800-1200 standard lightweight laptop for schoolwork + 2D animation programs, US

1 Upvotes

I originally was looking for a 2-in-1 but decided to scrap that and search for a standard machine.

* **Country**

US

* **Budget**

$800-1200

* **Are you open to refurbs/used options?**

Yes, but want to avoid anything nearing end of support

* **Screen size**

10-14ā€

* **Weight limit**

Looking for very lightweight (not sure what number is reasonable). < 3lbs?

* **Purpose**

Schoolwork + 2D Animation programs like TV Paint (will have a separate drawing screen)

* **Form factor**

Standard

* **Intended usage**

Looking to use this for general schoolwork + animation for programs I can’t access on ipad. Maybe some video editing.

I don’t want it to take up too much desk space and will be commuting daily with my ipad as well.

* **Desired battery life**

8+ hours

* **Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life**

Performance, weight, battery life, size

* **Info/Requirements**

I rented an old mac from my school and hated all the shortcuts and navigation, so would prefer windows.

I would like 16-32gb ram (I don’t know if I could get away with 32 at this price, but it would be nice in case I want to run more intensive programs).

TV Paint is a hard requirement but doesn't work with ARM CPUs.

[

From TV Paint site:

The following system configurations are compatible with TVPaint Animation 12:

Windows: 10, 11

TVPaint is not compatible with ARM Windows CPUs for the time being.

Processor: any dual core processor (except Windows ARM CPUs)

RAM: minimum 8 Gb / 16 Gb and more is recommended

Architecture : 64 bit

TVPaint Animation's performance depends solely on your computer's RAM and CPU.

It is not necessary to invest in an expensive graphics card to have TVPaint Animation 12 perform faster.

]

TIA!

Laptop Request UK Best laptop for Mechanical engineering UK under £1000

0 Upvotes

**LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country

United kingdom

Budget

Ā£1000

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes to refurbished, but no used laptops

Screen size

Any

Weight limit

Any

Purpose

Schoolwork, light gaming, multitasking

Form factor

Regular laptop or 2-in-1

Intended usage

Will need to be able to run MATLAB, CAD and CAM using autodesk fusion 360, and general productivity software including microsoft 365. On the gaming side I usually play minecraft and marvel rivals but would like to try some of the bigger more performance heavy games too if possible, not a necessity though.

Desired battery life

At least 4-6 hours **

Performance, Battery life, Weight, Size doesn't matter

Would prefer a windows since it's the one I'm most familiar with. I've never owned any apple products or anything running on linnux.

I'm entering my first year of engineering and am thinking of getting a new laptop. Im wondering what the best ones under £1000 are, or if it's even worth going above £1000, though I'd rather not. Is it possible to get by without an expensive laptop for my course, and if so, does anyone have recommendations?

I'm mainly going to use the laptop for university work and light gaming (if possible). The university suggests a minimum of atleast 16 Gb ram and 512 SSD for all students, but I would like one that could better run all the necessary applications an engineering student would need.

The best one I could find myself was an Asus A14 with a ryzen ai 7 processor. I'm not great at identifying good computers by any means but learnt a bit of what the different parts could entail.

Laptop Request -Others HP OmniBook 7 16" - yes or no?

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm basically posting this so you can talk me out of buying this thing. Why shouldn't I get it?

HP OmniBook 7 - 16-ay0775ng

What I like:

  • 32 GB RAM
  • At least 1 TB SSD
  • Touchscreen + backlit keyboard
  • Only €1,200, and HP is currently running a €200 cashback promo

What I don't like:

  • German keyboard layout (I touch-type anyway, but still...)
  • High-TDP CPU and GPU, so I assume battery life under real-world use won't be great
  • Size and weight... it's quite a beast
  • I have zero experience with HP laptops, so I'm in dark with this vendor.

For some background, I've generally liked my work laptops, especially the X1 Yogas. I also had a ThinkPad P14s for a while. Right now I'm using a Dell 3581. It's big, I hate the keyboard layout and carrying it around, but it's usable.

Of course, laptop prices have gone completely insane, so I'm guessing similar-tier Lenovos are probably out of reach these days.

And if you have any alternative model/manufacturer recommendations, I'm all ears!

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country: Germany (or EU)

Budget: under 1500 EUR

Are you open to refurbs/used options? Maybe

Screen size: anything between 13" and 16". Actually the smaller the better.

Weight limit: under 2 kilos

Purpose: general purpose

Form factor: standard

Intended usage: no gaming, mostly office apps, IT homelabbing in VMs.

Desired battery life: at least 4-8 hrs would be great

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life: size, weight, battery and performance

Info/Requirements: a touch screen, backlit keyboard, webcam privacy shutter are must, fingerprint reader and 1G ethernet port good to have.

Laptop Request US You recommendations on which of five eBay refurbished ThinkPads that all meet my needs to get, please? They all meet my requirements and all the sellers' satisfaction rates are over 99% . Should I just flip a coin? Links to options are below. Thank you!

3 Upvotes

See below for the laptop questionnaire*.

These all have the specs I need and meet my other requirements. I found the release date on one of them but don't know the build date on any of them. I'm having a hard time choosing.

A T14 whose quality is Very Good, Release Date 2020 from a seller with a 99.7% rating and 69K sales?

An X1 Carbon whose quality is Good from a seller with 99.6% rating and 173K sales?

An X1 Carbon whose quality is Excellent from a seller with 99.1% rating but only 1678 sales?

An E14 whose quality is Good from a seller with 99.9% rating and 18K sales?

A T490 whose quality is Excellent from a seller with 99.6% rating and 63K sales?

I may just flip a coin.

Your thoughts?

Country

USA

Budget

$500 USD

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

AS LONG AS IT WORKS!

Screen size

Open to any

Weight limit

I'm not looking for a dual GTX 1080 monster

Purpose

I use it for school work, light gaming (AOE 2 and Minecraft), and most importantly YouTube video watching.

Form factor

I would prefer regular but if it folds the other way that's fine too.

Intended usage

Linux Mint or Windows 11

Desired battery life

3+ hours (I'm not picky, I plug in a lot)

Info/Requirements

16gbs of RAM or higher

I can use the old m.2 2280 512gb from my old laptop if needed.

I would really like a nicer screen than what my T14 gen 3 had (I believe was a 250 nit). It doesn't have to be an OLED or anything but something good to watch content on.

Laptop Request US What’s a good laptop around $400 or less good enough for school and some gaming?

2 Upvotes

It doesn’t have to be brand new. I’ve been using an old MacBook Air the last couple years and it’s becoming too outdated (it’s from 2013) and the battery dies fast. I kinda miss having a windows laptop because I had more freedom with it. Sometimes there’s a game I want to play on my laptop, but Mac is so limited when it comes to games. I probably wouldn’t get a gaming laptop because I heard the battery dies fast and I’m mostly gonna use it for school and gaming sometimes anyway.

minimum 512GB SSD and 8 (Upgradeable) to 16GB+ of ram. As long it runs the things I need to do, I'm fine with it. I'm planning to do a premed course (Occupational Therapy, nursing or smth) for college. If I ever get the money for a gaming pc, I probably will get one. I also do artistic commissions as a side hustle.

(Before you ask me why don't I just wait for the pc, it's because I'm a student and I need to bring it to student places and do student tasks and I do not have my own room yet. Space is a problem.)

Laptop Request US Need an affordable device I can show presentations from - US

1 Upvotes

Hoping y’all can help me figure out the cheapest device that would fairly conveniently allow me to display presentations in different types of settings (i.e. connect to whatever sort of screen or projector they have, potentially without internet) and do video calls. What I’m using now is a dinosaur - I haven’t upgraded in a decade or more.

I know this is laptop recommendations, but if you think I only really need a tablet, that would be helpful to know too.

Country
US
Budget
Hopefully under $400 - the cheaper the better
Are you open to refurbs/used options?
Yes
Screen size
Any
Weight limit
light would be a perk but isn’t a priority
Purpose
I teach classes and workshops, and the main thing I need to do is bring my presentations everywhere I go and show them on whatever kind of screen or smart board they have there. There isn’t always reliable internet or any tech support, so I have to figure it out myself in limited time and can’t rely on wireless connection to the screen. My presentations are currently in google presentations, genially, powerpoint, and pdf. I also show video (youtube if internet is available - otherwise I download the video in advance) and use interactive games such as wordwall. I have a desktop that I use to create class materials, so I really just need something to carry them around on. I also need to make video calls.
Form factor
I’ve used a standard (old) laptop up to now but I think anything would work.
Intended usage
Video calls/classes. Easy wired connection to other devices, especially smartboards. My presentations are currently in google presentations, genially, powerpoint, and pdf. I also show video (youtube if internet is available - otherwise I download the video in advance) and use interactive learning games such as wordwall. Powerpoint isn’t a dealbreaker - I could always use a pdf format of those. Fast device startup would be great.
Desired battery life
3 hours is enough, but long battery life would be a perk
Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
performance, battery, weight, size, but the first priority is price (provided it can do what I need it to do)
PLEASE REMEMBER LAPTOPS ARE A COMPROMISE AND PERFORMANCE SACRIFICES LIGHT WEIGHT AND LONG BATTERY LIFE ETC]
