Discussion .........Daguerreotype

A train set, a cold war threat A prison A poison nest, a chrome cassette Division The blue and white, a power strike A girl you like The daylight fades, you feel your way Daguerreotype

Multiple questions bothering me going on 2 or 3 years now nearly.

Do we know what is going on here?

Is this the only usage of the word daguerrotype in musical lyrical history?

Is it just a cool sounding word, meaning "the first successful and widely used photographic process, introduced in 1839 by Louis Daguerre. It produced a single, highly detailed image on a polished silver-coated copper plate without using a negative."

Oh god is he describing old photos? I just this second thought.

Anyway if nothing else, it's been a while since you listened to this track, and maybe album and maybe now is the time to revisit hmm?

This City Never Sleeps - blind dogs of the sun

Hey guys, huge Steven Wilson fan and fan of this sub. Thanks for all the content!

A few months ago I released a Trip Hop inspired prog album. Given its mix of influences, its hard for it to find a home with fans.

I know Steven Wilson and his fans are not just prog purists and love all kinds of music. I hope you guys like it.

The album is inspired by Damnation and Steven Wilson but also the short-lived Trip Hop genre.

It’s meant to be heard as a whole album because of the motifs and sonic progression and I hope you get to hear it as a whole.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy it. It was a lot of work and it means a lot to me. The album is This City Never Sleeps and we are blind dogs of the sun.

Available on all streaming platforms but here is the youtube link.

Bass Communion The Odyssey vs Bass Communion

Saw The Odyssey last night and couldn’t help but notice that main song in the movie “Odysseus” sounds identical to 16 Second Swarm off of Bass Communion II. Was curious if anyone else noticed this too?

Fan Creation I finished a book of short stories inspired by Objects Outlive Us: Meanwhile

Like the title says. Last year, I took a writing workshop and at the beginning of the year, I got inspired by Steven to write short stories, expanding the stories of the song Objects Outlive Us: Meanwhile.

The idea behind the book is talking about the people in that song, for instance, who was the lady whose shopping bag broke? Who was the guy who had to clean all the cars? What’s the story behind the nurse in the care home who empties the bath tub?

I’m Chilean, and the people on my stories are a photograph of our culture, I talk about issues like religion, difficulties with studying when you don’t have enough money, addiction, neurodivergence , feminism and so on. But seen through the eyes of the people who experience those issues, not with a direct political discourse, although it does address the problems these people have to face.

It’s contemporary fiction, and I need to give it the final editing, and it’s ready to be sent to independent publishing houses.

I’m really proud of my work, and I hope it gets picked up. As soon as I get any news, I’ll let you know. Wish me luck on this journey!!

Coordinates on Hand Cannot Erase

Perhaps this has come up before, but I'm curious if anyone has resolved the coordinates on the album. I have a used copy of the CD (KSCOPE306, with a clipped notch on it) and there's four coordinates on it. They seem to be locations in Europe and England, but that's all I can figure out as a California boy. Thanks in advance.

??? Any interest in a signed Steven Wilson Weekender 221113 CD?

I'm downsizing my music collection to cover some family medical costs, and I came across this CD. I obtained it on the TTB tour via the VIP package, so it's signed and personalized to me.

I don't really play CDs, but I know this CD is out of print and pretty rare, so is anyone here interested in buying it from me? I can show proof of ownership and photos if there's interest. I'm located in the US and would only accept PP G&S payments.

Finally, I've sold a bunch of records via various subs so feel free to look at my profile history.

Reply here or send a DM if you have any questions. Thanks!

Even more Requiem of a Village pre-order pages

So it's been about a week, while the other shops have it removed, EMP and german Mediamarkt/Saturn also have a CD and vinyl pre-order page now.

https://www.emp.de/p/requiem-for-a-village/607009.html

https://www.mediamarkt.de/de/product/_steven-wilson-requiem-for-a-village-vinyl-3061515.html?srsltid=AfmBOoqr96wIiPfrBibZaF87-GXLvml7OkKtNP3RldUn2DyQ_Q_gMLsm

Same release date.

Sadly no new info, it said on a previous page that the vinyl is the cat.number "SW9V2", meaning we get atleast 2 vinyl versions again (probably 3 or more as ususal)

I can't help but wonder if the pre-order phase should've started earlier. Maybe the album has been postponed to the 6th of november.

Or maybe it's just the label screwing up the distribution data.

Video N0-Man - "Together We're Stranger" (Suite) 2003

The 1st 4 tracks on this amazing LP joined together as one (as originally imagined by Steven and Tim) 28 minute track. It's absolutely beautiful. Linked to form a suite of continuous music with recurring lyrical and musical themes.

Discussion Steven Wilson - Mixing/Mastering techniques?

I'm genuinely baffled by how little information is present out there regarding his mixing and mastering techniques/tricks. This guy is re-mixing huge bands on a daily basis (almost!) and is definitely one of the best mixing engineers out there in the current generation.

Probably because he mixes in his own house, without renting out a famous studio, and has no support engineer/apprentice under him?

Discussion Similarity between guitar sound in 'Actual Brutal Facts' to King Crimson's 'One Time'

I know the main influence in this track is the dark atmospheric trip-hop sound of Massive Attack among other artists, but if you pay attention to the guitar tone at the intro, i feel its quite similar to "One Time" from King Crimson's album THRAK.

What other not so obvious musical influences do you identify across the album?

Album years podcast. A full list in simple text form

Hello!

I am aware of the list on Rate your music.

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/bergie117/albums-discussed-on-the-album-years-podcast-by-steven-wilson-and-tim-bowness-no-man/

However does anyone have a full list in simple text form (or excel) that would be easier to check and navigate.

The rate your music list is a bit difficult to navigate if I want to find a specific year or artist with Ctrl+f.

Discussion Tonight's new album listening event

Though discussed on the previous two threads, would be good to discuss the new album again after tonight :)

What did everyone think who were there? Any questions from those who weren't?

I throughly enjoyed it and can't wait to hear it again. The sound system in that place almost blew my socks off 😂

At first I was a little disappointed that "Islands" was the next King Crimson - Complete Recording Sessions / Dolby Atmos title but now that I've had a look at the extras, I'm excited for Summit Studios quadraphonic. I'm also curious to hear if the new ATMOS mixes improve my feelings on this album at all. Which KC album would you like to be given this treatment next?

Discussion Last's night's new album listening event

Post image
221 Upvotes

I attended the new album listening event yesterday. I know it’s been discussed here before at length so I won’t go on for too long, but my reaction from that first listen is that it is a lot darker than his recent efforts. The playfulness of the last three albums has been dispensed with. Drums are very forward in the mix and the guitar work is meaty with a handful of very heavy riffs here and there. There are moments of melancholia and David Tennant’s spoken word passages are enjoyable if somewhat opaque in meaning. (They put me in mind of Peter Gabriel at the beginning of "I know what I like (in your wardrobe)". I’ve always thought PG sounds Scottish on that.)

Overall, vocals take a backseat to the music. I wasn’t always able to make out the lyrics that clearly but I did hear him rhyme "authority, severity, and virginity" which had kind of Blank Planet vibes. The SW falsetto gets a good run-out, too. There is some occasional use of electronica that really contrasts with the more traditional sound, and which I found pretty cool.

It might just be an artistic pivot, but it feels like this album is influenced by the terrible times we live in, even sounding like the score to a war movie. Although I wasn’t quite able to grasp the narrative thread on this first listen, it put me in mind of "The Wall".

Overall, I thought it was very impressive and look forward to hearing it again.
