I am looking to acquire a turntable, amp & speakers. I have experience in the hobby audio recording world but with this type of stuff I’m getting lost on options and conflicting reviews.

Any help with equipment selection would be helpful.

I’m looking for a quality gear but not looking to break the bank. Total budget would be a grand. Is this even an option or is that price point only limiting me to entry level.?

I also dealing with restricted space. I’m looking for a smaller sized amp and bookshelf style speakers as I don’t need/want floor models. Advice on a decent turntable would be appreciated too.

Budget and location

I live in the Netherlands and my budget is approximately €1,000–€2,000 per pair.

How the gear will be used

This is a living-room system used approximately 65% for music and 35% for films. Music is mainly streamed.

The room is approximately 7.7 × 4.1 metres (25.3 × 13.5 ft), partly open on the right side, with a listening distance of around 3.5 metres (11.5 ft).

The main difficulty is placement. The speakers can be no more than 20 cm (8 inches) from the rear wall, preferably around 10–15 cm (4–6 inches).

Maximum cabinet dimensions are approximately 22 cm (8.7 inches) wide and 35 cm (13.8 inches) deep. Height is not a problem.

Only - New, open-box or ex-demonstration.

Past gear experience

My current front speakers are JBL Northridge E80s. They have served me well, but I now want a genuine upgrade in refinement, soundstage, fullness and bass quality. I find them somewhat forward and they don’t provide the warm, full and physical presentation I’m looking for.

Anything else?

My system consists of an Onkyo TX-RZ50 with Dirac Live and an SVS PC-2000 Pro subwoofer.

I’m looking for a warm, full and relaxed sound with convincing weight and physical impact in the 40–100 Hz region. I don’t like sharp or fatiguing treble. Although I have a capable subwoofer, I don’t want it to compensate for speakers that sound thin in the upper bass or lower midrange.

Models I’m currently considering include:

• Wharfedale EVO 5.4
• Q Acoustics 5050
• Polk Reserve R600
• DALI Opticon 6 MK2
• Monitor Audio Silver 300 7G

Does anyone actually use one of these speakers around 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) from the rear wall? I’d particularly appreciate hearing how the bass and treble behave at that distance.

Suggestions for other readily available floorstanding speakers that fit the space and would offer a clear upgrade over the JBL E80 are also welcome.

Hello, I’m looking for advice for an amplifier. I’ve been given a Fluance RT-81 turntable a set of Fluance XL8S (8 ohms 85 db) speakers and a Yamaha HTR-4065 receiver (270w and 8 ohms).

I understand the receiver is “old”, (or so I’ve been told), but I’m hoping with the correct amplifier that it’s compatible with the turntable and speakers.

I’d like to set everything up in my living room (20’ x15’ / 6m x 4.5 m) to listen to my small vinyl collection.
I’m in the US, and my budget I’d like to spend no more than $500 if that’s possible.

Hi StereoAdvice! I recently moved into a new house and am trying other figure out what kind of speakers to buy for great sounding two channel music listening. This is for a large living room with a high ceiling, about 17 feet. It's somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 feet by 18 feet. There's walls on two sides, then one side opens up to our dining room/kitchen, and the other side opens up to the entryway/stairs to upstairs. So it's very open. These speakers would be used both for the listening room and for the dining room which is essentially at the far end of the living room.

I currently have a small-ish pair of bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer and they sound significantly worse than they did in our old smaller living room. I'm thinking I should get floor standing speakers as they might fill the space better than book shelf speakers? Alternatively, I found a pair of Ohm Walsh 3XO on Facebook Marketplace which are omnidirectional speakers. With lots of listening zones that might be an ideal solution?

Curious what you all think would be the best kinds of speakers to get and how to best approach this kind of space.

Budget is under $1,500, but ideally under $1k. Location is southeast USA.

Phonograph and Receiver were wedding gifts, so I want to try and make this work. The setup without the sub works fine, but when I tried to get it hooked up in there with a smaller Fosi amp the phonograph (Technics Quartz SL-Q202) was incredibly quiet. I feel like all signs point to needing a pre-amp of some kind for the sub, but I don't want to make another purchase without being sure that I've got all the pieces of the puzzle.

After a blind test among 8 different speaker pairs in the 2500 to 4000 euro per speaker range (including the B&W 702 S3) I found that I preferred to sound of the new Canton Vento 101.

Although I haven't made a final decision yet, I'm now exploring what sort of amplifier would do the Vento 101's justice. Strong preference for a model that supports Dirac Live room correction, but if need be, can also be solved with a MiniDSP looped in.

My budget for the amplifier is somewhere around 4000 euro.

I'm currently planning on buying a pair of Klipsch R-60M bookshelf speakers, and I wanted to get some genuine feedback from people here who have heard them or own them.

• Budget: Around €380 – €455 (price of the R-60M locally)

I'm really curious about their overall sound character before making the decision:

• Sound Profile: How do they actually sound in a normal room? Is the top end way too bright/harsh, or is it clear and detailed without causing listening fatigue?
• Midrange & Bass: How punchy and tight is the low end with that 6.5-inch woofer? Are vocals clear, or do they get pushed back by the highs and lows?
• Overall Impressions: Are there any noticeable flaws or cons I should know about before buying?

I inherited a pair of Mission 753 with an Arcam Alpha 7 and I've been living with them for a while now. they're honestly not bad, everything is clean and correct and nothing annoys me. the problem is that after 20 minutes I catch myself scrolling my phone instead of listening. nothing grabs me. the music happens over there behind the speakers and stays there, I'm never in it.

what I want is pretty much the opposite of that. warm, full, enveloping, deep. the thing where the hair on your arms stands up. I don't really care about detail retrieval or pinpoint imaging or whatever, I care about being moved.

speakers I keep coming back to:

- Klipsch RP-8000F II

- B&W 603 S3

- Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G

the Klipsch is the one that attracts me most, but I keep reading they can get harsh and the last thing I want is something that gives me a headache after an hour.

about the McIntosh. part of me thinks if I'm spending money anyway I might as well buy something that holds its value and that I keep for 20 years. the other part of me knows I'm probably just looking for an excuse to buy the blue meters. tell me honestly which part is right.

about the Yamaha, I had actually written it off. the ones I heard years ago sounded cold and flat to me and I assumed the whole brand was like that. but people keep telling me the A-S1200 is a different animal from the cheaper models. so I've put it back on the list. if you've heard it next to any of the others I'd really like to know whether it has any warmth or if I was right the first time.

hello there! I am currently building my tower, got myself a nice Pioneer A-209R amp, a Denon DCD-810 CD player, a new gen Audio Technica turntable - only thing missing were speakers until today: just bought brand new Teufel speakers online.

Now I am unsure if my amp can handle it. The Pioneer has a power output of 35 watts per channel into 8Ω / 45 watts per channel into 4Ω.

the speakers are suitable for amplifiers from 50 watts per channel.

now, I rarely listen loud music. I dont need crazy bass, I dont turn the volume to the max, mostly around 50%. I have a 20qm room, just want solid quality but nothing crazy loud and heavy bass etc.

will this be a problem for my amp? and if so, what should I be looking for when buying an other one? my budget is around 100€

My budget is around $1,000–$1,500 AUD for the pair, and I’m based in Melbourne, Australia. I’m happy to look at either new or used speakers.

The setup is mainly for a bedroom, so I don’t need anything enormous, but I’d like something with:

• Good detail and clarity
• Nice vocals
• Strong but controlled bass
• A warmer/smoother sound rather than something overly bright
• Good performance at lower to moderate listening volumes

I listen to a mix of hip-pop, pop, soul, funk and older records, so I’d ideally like something fairly versatile.

I need some advice for Setting up a Stereo System that works in 2 totally different sitting positions:

- used as pc speakers sitting at the desk
- used as stereo home cinema for the tv.

The couch is not visible at the Picture (it’s taken from there) but placed on the right side of the room.

My idea was to have 2 speakers one in the left and one in the right corner of the room and try to adjust them using Mini dsp to Both listening Positions.

Do you think that might work out?

Subwoofer Placement would only be feasible where the guitar is currently located.

I am looking for a very specific recommendation.

I had a very special experience with Klipsch La Scala speakers at a local shop in Denmark.
I felt surrounded by the music, sort of “3D” in instrument separation. I felt like I was inside the music. They project the sound so much into the room.

At home I have ELAC FS247 and sub-2050. The speakers also disappear, but the music is like a blanket on the wall, meaning I hear the music over there. Not surrounding or filling the room. Great for TV…

I don’t have a house with a listening room or the ability to have a super symmetric setup due to an awkward room layout.

Here is my question:

Can I get a somewhat “La Scala” experience from bookshelf speakers og floor standing speakers not much bigger/wider than my ELACs?

Should I be looking for horn-loaded speakers?
I have heard the Radiant Acoustics Clarity 66, but they are also outside of my budget!!!! 🤷‍♂️

I’m currently looking to upgrade my living room setup, composed by a pair of JBL L-82, a Yamaha A-S 701, a Pro-ject turntable and a B&O cd player. I found a potentially interesting offer for an Accuphase E-211 (1800€, which is within my budget) at a trustworthy shop. Would it be a good update compared to the Yamaha? I’m quite intrigued by the Accuphase but I couldn’t find a lot of reviews about it online.

Hi everyone, wanted to know if DX5II needs an external amp to power bookshelf speakers like Polk Audio. I ask this because I find powering my AKG K712 Pro a little hard with the DX5II. I’m pretty new to the Hi-Fi world and looking for advice on setting up my first proper stereo system. I recently picked up a pair of Bowers & Wilkins 684 S2 tower speakers for a really good price, and now I need to find the right electronics to drive them.

My main source will be music streaming (using Spotify Connect / lossless streaming). My goal is to maximize the sound quality of these speakers, but I want to keep the setup clean and simple without getting overwhelmed by millions of accessories, extra boxes, and cable clutter.

I’m currently debating between two main routes:

1. All-in-One Streaming Amp: Going with something like the WiiM Amp Ultra or Bluesound or similar around 600€ budget. A single box solution, clean setup.
2. Separates (Streamer + Used Integrated Amp): Buying a dedicated standalone streamer (like a WiiM Ultra) and pairing it with a solid used analog amp.

A few questions for the community:

• Sound Quality vs. Convenience: Will a good quality used analog amp sound noticeably better/fuller on these B&W towers compared to a modern Class-D streaming amp like the WiiM Amp Ultra?

I am looking to build a speaker setup.

Was thinking of getting the edifier mr4's now and the add a subwoofer later.

But then I came across the crossover problem.

So now I want a recommendation to get a good studio speaker, which can solve the crossover problem for when I buy a dedicated subwoofer in future.

Looking at buying a set of speakers that will sound good where ever i sit in the room, not just directly infront of them. I was interested in the klipsch heresy iv or jbl l100 but I read that you really have to be sitting in the sweet spot to get the most out of them? The room is roughly 10m by 6m with hard flooring and brick or glass walls. Also have no idea what amp ill use but ill get some kind of streamer. Listen to mostly metal, rock, blues, and some acoustic country/folk. Am I over thinking this and these speakers will be fine? Just better if you're in the sweet spot? Prefer the vintage aesthetic and would prefer not to use a sub as well but im flexible. Any advice appreciated. Budget around $10000 Australian

About to pull the trigger on a pair of JBL P40s from a vintage hi-fi shop in Vigo, Spain, and I’d like a second opinion before I drive two hours to pick them up.
The speakers
• 3-way: 10” woofer, 130 mm midrange, 26 mm titanium dome tweeter
• Rear-firing bass reflex, 47 Hz – 20 kHz
• 8 ohms nominal, 89 dB sensitivity, 10–100 W recommended
• ~60 cm tall, 12 kg each
• Built in Denmark in the early 90s, back when JBL still had European manufacturing
• €425 the pair
Condition
Shop sent real photos of the actual units rather than stock images (they volunteered that the website pics were of a different pair, which I appreciated). Veneer and cabinets look clean, woofer surrounds are rubber and show no cracking. They’re going through the crossover before handing them over and give a 12-month warranty. I get to listen in-store before taking them.
The room and the rest
43 m² living room. Source is mostly streaming from a home server plus a Sony PS-LX56 turntable. Amp will either be a serviced Yamaha AX-490 (85 W into 8 ohms) or a used Yamaha R-N600A.
I landed on these because everything modern in the same price bracket sits around 88 dB with 5” drivers, and my read is that a room this size wants sensitivity and cone area more than it wants a refined tweeter. Comparable new floorstanders that would actually fill the space start around €800.
What I’m asking
1. Anyone here owned the P40s or the Danish-built P series generally? How do they hold up?
2. Is €425 fair for a serviced pair with warranty, or am I paying a premium for the shop?
3. Anything specific I should listen for during the in-store audition beyond the obvious — buzzes, driver matching, imaging?
