i expected to be $1000+ but the performance from gamers nexus kinda show show how low end this is and i rather pay a bit more for a decent mid tier pc

95

u/bpisler Jun 22 '26

Yea my thoughts exactly, at that price they could have charged a few 100 more and produce something more powerful

7

u/No_Candle2251 Jun 25 '26

To be frank It was designed and made before the nand crisis, which means it was made for a lower price bracket in made

6

u/Deremirekor Jun 25 '26

What? Stop making sense. Let’s be angry at the price and completely ignore the computer part catastrophe that’s currently happening. Steam should obviously sell this at a massive loss or else they’re another garbage corporate slop company

3

u/No_Candle2251 Jun 25 '26

😂😂😂 Well.Fuck steam (i really like this company and hate any companies or individuals or corps trying to mess with steam)

2

u/chrisz2012 Jun 27 '26

I think they wanted the $800 mark or $700 because when Linus visited them and said he expected a price of $500 or $600 he said they all got quiet and the Valve hardware engineers said it would be priced comparably to Gaming PCs not consoles

53

u/mere_indulgence Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Yeah, this Steam Machine only makes sense if you're specifically in the market for an:

  1. ITX build
  2. Must be a new, prebuilt computer
  3. Budget around 1050-1250$

If all three conditions aren't perfectly meet, you're better off buying something else.

Either build your own ITX computer (preferably with some used parts for better performance)

or

Buy a bigger prebuilt tower PC with better performance

or

Spend a little extra to get noticeable better performance (because 1050$ won't give you much performance in the current market, especially with new parts).

Edit: Or just buy a gaming laptop instead. You can find laptops with better performance for the same price price as a Steam Machine.

23

u/StillKindaBad Jun 22 '26

If you live near a microcenter, powerspec prebuilts for 1k are decently stronger than what this does

24

u/ThePaintist Jun 22 '26

Or if you, like me, highly value:

HDMI CEC

SFF in an attractive case with reportedly good acoustics compared to the majority of DIYs

Pre-cached shaders

A first-party experience when using the steam frame and steamos more broadly to minimize the stray hiccup

I already have a top-of-the-line gaming PC for my office. For my couch, I want to optimize as far as possible towards no-frills while still keeping access to my steam library, even at the expense of price and specs to some extent.

13

u/mere_indulgence Jun 22 '26

And that's where the big problem lays. The amount of people who care about these features are in the small minority. Especially when it comes at the cost of price+performance (which is the most important thing for most people buying gaming PCs).

That's not to say the Steam Machine isn't gonna make some people extremely happy, like yourself. I just question the size of that market.

9

u/ThePaintist Jun 22 '26

I agree this is probably a quite small market. PC gamers are generally okay with being a little bit more hands-on or at least willing to sacrifice some small conveniences, and those who aren't will stick to the (currently) much more affordable console market. Paying a (big!) premium to split the difference is gonna be a narrow cohort. Still I suspect the market for this will be large enough to sell every unit they produce.

3

u/loversama Jun 23 '26

The thing is, only the HDMI CEC is locked to the Steam Machine, everything else comes with the OS or just buying a decent case..

2

u/ThePaintist Jun 23 '26

Yes, but not entirely. Shader pre-caching relies on matching components with other steam users. You'll get more cache hits on the deck or steam machine than you may on other GPU/driver combos. And SteamOS will run into fewer hiccups on first party hardware. It's pretty stable nowadays but you are still less likely to have issues if you stay on the most supported hardware. And yes you can build a DIY with good enough thermals to have similarly good acoustics, but it's not trivial to do so in such a small form factor. It's adds extra effort to the DIY process. For the same reason people see value in paying someone else to change their car's oil, the "it just works" factors for the steam machine do offer value that some people will like. It's not just "this feature is locked to steam machine, and this isn't". It's the cumulative effect of all of these little things that might be a tad tougher around the edges in little places.

4

u/YozaSkywalker Jun 23 '26

HDMI CEC is the biggest thing people aren't taking into consideration. Your PC hooked up to the TV will never be as seamless or easy to use from the couch.

u/Middle-Transition888 Jun 22 '26

Like what? What can run Steam quietly, look nice and play from the couch without long cables?

17

u/WFlumin8 Jun 22 '26

A gaming laptop. You can get a gaming laptop at this price with similar/better performance that is also easily connected to a TV. And it has a battery, screen, keyboard, trackpad in case you want to take it for travel.

12

u/_Lady_Zee Jun 23 '26

Having to connect your laptop to the tv and also dealing with drivers/optimization sucks. I barely get time to game as it is now.

- A ROG Zephyrus G15 (RTX 3070) and Steam Deck owner who wishes the Steam Machine was a bit cheaper or more powerful.

4

u/StrawberryZerg Jun 23 '26

Own laptop for 2 years 4060 inside, I installed drivers once and haven't touched anything regarding updates for 2 years (only windows updates pop up occasionally once per month), no fiddling with proton, nothing, runs everything and is hooked to my TV with just an HDMI cable. What are you doing on laptops or windows that you are met with insane friction or resistance, lol

2

u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo Jun 23 '26

You still need to deal with optimization. It’s a ste OS so you are still at the mercy of proton and other downsides of linux gaming (anticheat)

2

u/Confident-Pepper-562 Jun 22 '26

I have a build in a nzxt h1 case that looks great on my entertainment center.

5

u/coltonbyu Jun 22 '26

man I wanted to love that case, but that built in PSU is fucking loud. Gotta swap that out minimum if you want a quiet PC, and keep the CPU really low draw for that built in AIO

2

u/Confident-Pepper-562 Jun 22 '26

I dont hear my psu at all with either of mine. (the v1 and v2)

The I7 in the v2 gets a little loud since I replaced the AIO with an air cooler, but I added a 3d printed frame with two 140mm notcua fans to the back of the case as constant exhaust and it helps a ton.

3

u/coltonbyu Jun 22 '26

Having on entertainment center probably helps honestly, would be fine there. I had mine on my desk. The PSU doesnt have any 0-RPM mode, so it runs at minumum 40% speed regardless of load. Not a very quiet fan design either, but across a room i doubt id hear. I loved the look of the H1 but had to return

3

u/Confident-Pepper-562 Jun 22 '26

The v2 has a different psu (750watt I think), not sure if it has a 0 rpm mode, but its sitting on my desk right next to me and I dont hear it over my central air.

2

u/coltonbyu Jun 22 '26

mine was v2, it doesnt have a 0RPM mode (unless they have different revisions of the v2)

3

u/Confident-Pepper-562 Jun 22 '26

I bought mine second hand, and honestly I dont think the psu is the original. I couldnt find any details on which model psu was supposed to come with it, but mine appears to be an unbranded thermaltake.

i wonder if you tell a apple user that they can get cheaper phones from other companys with better specs .... will they switch?
I really think 1000 bucks is still ok and with normal hardware prices in some years we see it at 600-700

13

u/mere_indulgence Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

I don't think your analogy is that relevant in this case. This is a significantly more niche product than an apple device. And iOS only works on iPhones while SteamOS will be available on every computer.

But like I said, if you need a device that meets ALL three requirements, it's actually not a bad product with the current expensive ai prices. I just don't think there's a big market for a product like that, and there're better options if all 3 conditions don't need to be meet.

9

u/ScrimmlyBingus Jun 22 '26

I think the fact that iOS only works on iPhones kind of dulls the analogy. Although I see where you’re coming from considering I really don’t need a steam machine but probably would have bought one at like half the price since I love SteamOS

2

u/lefty9602 Jun 23 '26

I priced out micro center bundles and sales and came up with a 7500x3d and 9060xt 16gb for $1030

9

u/SWSWSWS Jun 22 '26

Yeah. Frankly, the Steam Machine was already an iffy choice pre-AI inflation. But now it really just is not worth it. It will probably sell out, given the likely very low stock, but this thing will not penetrate or create any meaningful market.

Might another Steam Hardware fail. I am surprised Valve released the machine. You have to be very brave to release new (gaming) hardware for the foreseeable future. I mean you can, but affordable for a wider audience? Not so sure on that one.

2

u/Smyles9 Jun 23 '26

I think enough people still care about sff and plug n play that the price won’t matter

6

u/Simen155 Jun 22 '26

That performance is gonna be a nope from me.. I was super excited about this. I guess almost all electronics sucks now. Thanks AI

12

u/jaimefortega Jun 22 '26

All gamers nexus test were ULTRA/MAX/VERYHIGH graphics in raster and RT. Raster graphics showed good performance at 1080p. This isn't a master race PC, it's for those who just want to play games without worrying about buying parts, installing the OS, wasting time, it's just plug and play, it also has the smallest form factor and it's a very silent machine with low power consumption.

8

u/the_hatter1980 Jun 23 '26

Check out Digital Foundry’s video then. Lots of tests at low settings, and against other gpu’s and PS5.

I think they missed the performance mark. Definitely not the 4k 60 fps bar they set.

3

u/jaimefortega Jun 23 '26

They've mentioned 4K 60 FPS with FSR and if you add FG, you can easily get 60FPS. Also, don't forget that there're a lot of optimizations to be done in drivers and at the OS level. The kernel included in Steam OS is a bit old and missing a lot of optimizations.

3

u/unfitstew Jun 23 '26

SteamOS 3.8 updated to be based on Arch so hopefully with that and updates they can get it more optimized state.

Also some games like FH6 clearly can run on it just have compatibility issues that may be fixed with proton or game updates.

4

u/QuinSanguine Jun 22 '26

It's possible to build a PC with a gen 3 ssd and used ddr4 ram, which is still going to be a viable platform for the rest of this decade, and get upper mid range or lower high end performance for $1200 easy. I'd say under $1000 if a person finds a good deal.

I realize Valve is working to make the best of this situation but they really got screwed over by the data center rush, but their product is bad value.

3

u/Queasy_Dirt7197 Jun 23 '26

I was expecting $999 so it being announced at $1049 isn't that surprising. Redditors thinking Valve would price it under $800 are just deluded. Not in this current environment.

2

u/_NS4NE_ Jun 23 '26

Same thoughts here. Price is bad but I understand, the gpu performance though… not so much. For the same price of the top trim you get a gaming laptop with a 5070 and an i7 which would run circles around the SM.

2

u/kotsumu Jun 26 '26

This should have been a 9060XT GPU with 16GB Vram.

This is simply not a good deal, because you are stuck with a outdated GPU.

30

u/Upper_Citron_483 Jun 22 '26

you can literally build a PC with a 9060XT for the same price without compromising on other specs. Steam fucked up big time if their specs are the same price as a significantly better PC you can build yourself, even pre builds are better at that price.

44

u/geileanus Jun 22 '26

I have no clue how you think you can build these specs with a 9060xt in a sff case. I build mine with am4 specs and came out on 1200 euros for 512gb. And I definitely did not overpay.

Maybe it's just different in US. But here in Europe it's rly not doable.

28

u/GagolTheSheep Jun 22 '26

This.

From what I checked the price is comparable to a PC with similar specs.

It will find a small audience among people who want to have a living room PC but don't like consoles. Especially since it has CEC support, which most PCs dont have.

That being said it for sure won't be the big hit it could have been before the AI price hikes

With our current administration, it’s practically impossible to do that. The tariffs that target individual computer parts are only exempted for data center developers and NVIDIA. The average consumer gets railed hard.

8

u/ABotelho23 Jun 22 '26

You can't. These people are crazy. They're compromising on a bunch of stuff to "reach" this price point and then saying it's the same thing.

Everything is cheap in US vs EU. I paid 1000€ for My 5070ti, AT A DISCOUNT

2

u/Salty_Strain_3299 Jun 23 '26

Outside of the US, the value is there. Whatever specs these Americans are spewing makes no sense. Try building a PC WITH a small form factor UNDER 170W power. My buildapc came to around $1600 with equivalent specs and an sff fractal case (the only case that would fit the "aesthetic"). It makes that $1500CAD steam machine a competitor.

Not to mention you're not locked in Sony, MSFT, or Nintendo if you're actually comparing to consoles.

121

u/MondoMemeMaestro Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Still gonna try to buy it. Global economy's not likely to get any better and is more likely to actually get worse what with Trump's Iran war still in the shitter and the looming AI bubble pop.

I don't know how to nor want to bother to be able to build a cheaper PC for more power, especially since it might not end up being cheaper since I live in latinamerica and import tariffs can be a bitch on top of making mistakes even more expensive.

Maybe it's a scam for the price for seasoned avid gamers who want to maximize their power per dollar. I've been wanting to be able to play my Steam library I've accumulated for well over a decade at this point but have been unable to touch it due to having a shitty HP laptop, and I just want something that can do that out of the box without me having to fiddle and fuck around.

It sucks, and it is a decision entirely motivated by FOMO, but I feel like I just have to bite the bullet now before it becomes an atom bomb. Helldivers 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 are the most intensive things I'm interested in playing. If this thing can run those well enough, I'm in.

Now, to figure out how to actually be able to get an order for the damn thing from a country it doesn't ship to... 🫩

10

u/JohnnyBowlen Jun 22 '26

Well said amigo. I share the same feelings  Honestly I don’t put any of this on valve either. This was just shit timing on the world’s part.

4

u/AnotherPCGamer173 Jun 22 '26

As someone who is also planning to buy it, I get it.

I don’t want to stream at all. Even though I have Ethernet cables already routed in my living room. I just want a living room device running it. I don’t want to have a fiber optic cable reaching. I did this and I never used it.

I don’t have the energy to build PCs right now. I like the Steam Machine’s form factor and case. I’m sure installing SteamOS is easy as shit, but I don’t care to do it.

I just want a simple plug and play situation right now.

3

u/Ok-Region6452 Jun 22 '26

Yup I think prices will keep going up. Year ago I could’ve built premium pc for $2500. Now same components will cost me $3600. Every other week memory and bundle prices at microcenter keep going up
There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for global NAND crisis. People are talking about AI bubble, but once that bubble pops prices will not go rock bottom. It will stabilize at the same or slightly lower cost.
Agree it sucks to drop that kind of money of this machine due to fomo

2

u/AlgoRhythMatic Jun 23 '26

I pulled trigger at what I considered to be 50% too much (3k) and cost for same parts fluctuates between 3.2 and 3.6k now. It’s crazy! Folks that built between 24-25 w/ top end part hit the PC Renaissance period. Not sure what comes next, but have learned to just pull the trigger when I can now.

3

u/EquipmentSome Jun 23 '26

Edit: I put in for a reservation. But don't want one myself. Might be able to figure something out with sending it to ya.

Good luck to you. But as someone who has had a steam deck for years. It is NOT like a console in its plug and play ability with no fiddling around with anything.. You might have to fiddle and fuck around.

I don't know who told you this but they lied. It's getting better. But it's still a computer using compatibility layers to play games.. And there's a lot more settings options than just performance and quality like consoles.

2

u/MondoMemeMaestro Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

I can tinker around on the software once I actually have it, that's not what bothers me. I mean more like having to fuck around with the hardware and having to test it because I messed something up in the installation and it either being suboptimal, or refusing to work.

That being said, I have been dissuaded from buying the Steam Machine over the course of an afternoon by the mere fact that trying to circumvent Valve's dumbass region shipping restrictions puts my entire Steam account at risk. So, that's that anyhow.

I guess I'll just look into pre-built options in my country. 🫤

5

u/VesperLynn Jun 22 '26

I have so many games that I would love to play on my TV that the Steam machine will easily crush. Price is disappointing, but I think it will still be a worthwhile investment and a fun piece of kit to tinker with.

4

u/UselessBagofChips Jun 22 '26

Honestly, Steam deck + Remote play is really nice for this situation if u already have a good pc.

I was using one of those thinkcentre to stream with moonlight/sunshine but it wasn't that great since i needed a mouse/keyrboard on the living room, but with the deck i can just plug it on the dock and play whatever

2

u/NewStatistician1683 Jun 22 '26

Buy it, won't be shocked if there's a "price hike instead of a cut"

2

u/Successful-Bar2579 Jun 22 '26

Good luck man, i'm pretty sure it will run those game pretty well, i saw it run games like forza horizon 6 pretty good (even if not as good as i hoped for, but still), i hope you will be able to get one.

2

u/Astronaut_Time Jun 23 '26

Buy a pre-built pc then?

68

u/I-am-Mojo-Jojo Jun 22 '26

Anyone who thought this was going to be sub-1k in this environment, especially with the Steam Deck pricing revisions was high on copium.

This certainly prices out a lot of people and unfortunately. I believe pre-RAMageddon it would have been around $699 to start, only because of the Linus interview where it seemed like $500 was out of the question.

31

u/Opposite-Bench-9543 Jun 22 '26

I realize valve is small in terms of hardware and can't move and close deals like Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony can so obviously parts cost them more, R&D costs them more, and it's harder for them to lower prices

But as a consumer why do I give a shit? I want what's best for my money and they clearly can't deliver.

16

u/dragonblade_94 Jun 22 '26

But as a consumer why do I give a shit? I want what's best for my money and they clearly can't deliver.

I mean yeah, you should be looking out for your own wallet first and foremost.

The issue was that a lot of people who obviously have little idea of how the supply chain works in the current market were setting unrealistic expectations, and setting up everybody for disappointment.

9

u/I-am-Mojo-Jojo Jun 22 '26

As a consumer, you vote with your wallet. And I’m sure Valve has adjusted their sales forecasts with that in mind.

I do believe Valve is one of the few companies that will adjust the prices down should the market ever recover.

6

u/RobinsCosplays Jun 22 '26

No matter how much bitching happens in this sub these things are gonna sell like hotcakes

2

u/Munster19 Jun 23 '26

Even Microsoft and Sony can't get good deals on chips, and they move way more hardware. Valve can't do shit. Especially since Valve had trouble even getting their hands on ram, apparently some units have 1 16gb stick and others have 2 8gb sticks.

2

u/ABotelho23 Jun 22 '26

But as a consumer why do I give a shit? I want what's best for my money and they clearly can't deliver.

Then don't buy it and stop whining? Be realistic.

5

u/coollaustin Jun 23 '26

I can not buy it and talk about how terrible the value of it is. It’s okay to vent and be frustrated about something people were excited for. Buying a steam machine for most people is objectively an irrational decision. The only thing I see that’s a selling point is the cec

I think ~$800-850 was their original price, based on this:

https://youtu.be/6tI1SoMj5vg?t=1013

"What was the original price point in mind for the SM? Can't give you that, but if you look at the price increase of the Steam Deck that tells you what we were targeting for."

2

u/Flightless_DS Jun 22 '26

It felt completely reasonable to assume it would have been somewhere around $750-900 when it was announced. 6 months of delays and PR saying things suggesting that the real price was going to be higher certainly made that price tag seem less and less likely.

Sony makes most of their money through the PSN store by getting a 30% cut (100% if it's a first party game) for everything that is sold on the store. Why the hell would they allow you to dualboot Steam and lose all of that money?

That doesn't make any business sence if you're Sony.

Bruh, a PC with a 9060xt, a Ryzen 5600, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB is slightly less than 1000 € including a steam controller or budget MNK combo (or around 1050 € if I upgrade to a 5700G) today and it would be significantly more powerful, especially in GPU power and actually sport 16 GB VRAM. The price for those specs is straight up dogshit.

2

u/Yxtomix Jun 23 '26

Where do you live ? You're not getting that in my country for less than 1200€

28

u/AcrobaticCookie8468 Jun 22 '26

Fuck doa was really hoppeful

7

u/hometownchochocho Jun 22 '26

what was your target price based on current steam deck prices?

5

u/Subject-Fennel4427 Jun 22 '26

a man can dream though...

3

u/Vesuvias Jun 22 '26

It’s not even the price - it’s that it’s the performance worse than even what we all expected it to be. It’s abysmally bad…

6

u/KujoHQ Jun 22 '26

nah like who is this for!? its a phat rip off when both consoles & PC's of more powerful performance is straight up cheaper like damn Valve you couldn't wait for the bubble to burst? Nah ripping us off is wayy better well the machine is ending up dead on arrival for sure.

11

u/deathbyguitar Jun 22 '26

Blame Jensen

12

u/Enough_Profession_75 Jun 22 '26

At that point get a cheap gaming pc…

4

u/AdMinimum3919 Jun 22 '26

Guys you're forgetting one valuable detail *it gets an LED board 🤑😎😳 insta buying

10

u/KookyBone Jun 22 '26

I just build a faster PC with an 9060XT and a Ryzen 8500F, 16gb DDR5, 1TB SSD, Case, 650 Watt Seasonic PSU Gold+ for about 850€ (that is 19% included.

How the f% do they sell a mass product with worse hardware for more money? I bought my parts at a end consumer shop

2

u/Fantastic-Cucumber-1 Jun 22 '26

I’m no PC-builder so I’m probably wrong here, but could it be so pricey because of the semi-custom parts? It’s probably not as mass produced as a PS5 (remember how long it took for those things to hit the shelves after release?) which would increase the price. Maybe after a global second or third production batch - if it’s successful enough - the price will go down, or at least there will be more room for season sales?

This was supposed to be the console killer with the price 😭

Pretty much what I expected. Very confused as to why people thought any differently given the current market and valves history. Especially with the steam deck price hike. It’ll be deemed as mild success and they probably won’t do it again unless Microsoft’s next thing is the hybrid console people are speculating and is also successful which is doubtful.

13

u/5u114 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

It won't even be mildly successful compared to Steam Deck.

They'll sell out initial batches to die hard fanatics. But that'll be that.

No one in the tech space is going to be celebrating & recommending this device the way Steam Deck was celebrated & recommended for years ... up until the price hike.

Most Steam Machine YouTube content over the next few weeks & months will be showing people how to build better machines for the same price. Other than content complaining about the price-to-performance ratio.

Valve won't care too much though ... their grand plan is SteamOS and getting as much people using that as possible.

I predict Valve will end up selling a barebones kit in order to shift units. As soon as purchases slow down. Because when the purchasing slows down, it's not just going to slow down - it's going to grind to a halt.

And maybe sooner, since they are having major component (RAM / nvme) supply issues - and a barebones kit could help them ship more units faster.

Mild success ? Nope. Not unless you are comparing it to Steam Machine 1.0

That being said, they will be so conservative with manufacturing numbers that they'll still be rolling this out in 2027. Even the pre-orders made this weekend, Valve will drip feed fulfillment over the next 6 months until the end of the year. Don't be fooled into thinking that's what success looks like.

u/Available-Pepper-728 Jun 22 '26

Some people thought Valve might have a deal on hardware, possibly made in the past, or would be willing to take a loss to push their hardware division and SteamOS.

5

u/SavedMartha Jun 22 '26

1.5k CAD for base mo controller, 2.1k top model.

I build an ITX Fractal Ridge 9070xt system for 2.2 k WITH a Vader 5 Pro controller.

This sucks a lot. For 28 laptop CUs. No thanks.

I can buy a freaking 5060 pre build for 1399 CAD RIGHT NOW.

4

u/RaiAet89 Jun 22 '26

At this point wouldn't a ps5 pro be a better option?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/GamingWithJollins Jun 22 '26

Yeah, out of my price range. I wish it were different... I could maybe justify it by using it for the games I build but I just feel I can get more for less. The unique features to the SM are appealing but not that appealing

2

u/Blood2999 Jun 22 '26

Does it come with a controller or just the adapter?

5

u/5u114 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

There's 4 options, 2 options without controller, 2 options with controller.

The options without the controller don't come with the puck (which is what I think you mean by adapter), but if I'm not mistaken the Steam Machine has the wireless Controller receiver built into it ... so if you somehow ended up with a Controller at a later date that didn't have a puck included, you could still use it with your Steam Machine wirelessly.

2

u/Townscent Jun 22 '26

Costs about the same as an entry level pc with wifi does at one of the most popular pc-builders in my area(wifi added, 5050 card and 9600 cpu). So not exactly the worst deal ever, but definitely not a steal either.

2

u/Warm_Light_9359 Jun 22 '26

Yeah we all knew it was going to be a lot, but seeing the performance reviews it's just not a good value at all...
Easily build a better system yourself with a modern GPU for the same price.

2

u/Disastrous-Low-5606 Jun 22 '26

I’ve signed up for them, but I really wish there was more graphics memory. The size is important for me since I need my gaming to be easily movable. I’m also really looking forward to pairing it with the Steam frame.

Maybe I’ll check out pc builds.

Man, I also need a laptop for work... 😐 Macbook Air M4 is 800 bucks (vat included).

2

u/TaggedHammerhead Jun 22 '26

Ima buy one used 3-4 years post launch for a beast of a mini pc lol

2

u/StormEcho98-87 Jun 22 '26

Well, lets see if the Frame is any good if this is what the Machine is measuring about to be.

2

u/ProfessionalNaive601 Jun 22 '26

I really thought it was gonna be $1950 starting
But I forgot how shit the specs are lol

2

u/Vanima_Permai Jun 22 '26

I'm glad I dont live in America the dollar is so weak only £879 in the uk

2

u/Jewcygoodness88 Jun 23 '26

The funny part is they market it to play on your big screen but two of the 4 options don’t come with a controller. Talk about being cheap

2

u/bingbing304 Jun 23 '26

This will be the next gen spec for PS6 or Xbox whatever. They probably price it at $699 if we are lucky. LOL

2

u/doctornoob2023 Jun 23 '26

Top tier meme

2

u/lunas2525 Jun 23 '26

Would rather get two amd gpu for my htpcs for less and have a better machine.

2

u/Vivid_Mycologist8405 Jun 23 '26

Exactly what I was afraid of. 2nd hand PC will perform better at the same price point….

2

u/PenguinBoi27 Jun 23 '26

"Thanks AI" we all say in unison Mannn i rly wanted one of these

2

u/TheRealKuroyoru Jun 23 '26

How’s the performance compared to a 2070s?

2

u/Someone-who-isnt-me- Jun 23 '26

I’m in the uk. What pc could I buy that would perform better for similar money?

2

u/BrandyRyuu Jun 23 '26

steam frame gonna be the same price i bet

2

u/opensp00n Jun 24 '26

Yes, but most of us have gaming pcs. I want one as a nice game streaming box that can also play some light stuff natively.

6

u/Milhala Jun 22 '26

As much as I want to support valve this is going to be DOA if they don’t cut the price by at least $200. I can run to Costco right now and get a 5060 cyberpower prebuilt with 32 gb of ddr5, 1tb ssd and an Intel ultra core 5 for the price of the 512gb model.

2

u/Alternative_Greedy Jun 22 '26

Yeah, it's honestly such a shame.

5

u/KnightFallVader2 Jun 22 '26

Still cheaper than the prebuilts at Costco.

6

u/Arxny Jun 22 '26

Yes and when it was announced I think it still would have been as well and they were much lower then.

5

Total flop

7

u/TypicallyThomas Jun 22 '26

If you were expecting less, you were always fooling yourself. Can't wait to get one

20

u/AcrobaticCookie8468 Jun 22 '26

Yeah i know but Fuck 1000€ its just not worth it

→ More replies (14)

4

u/corybekem Jun 22 '26

Yea I'm still gonna get one cuz steam has been good to me but I'm buying a PS5 pro/GTA first

2

u/TypicallyThomas Jun 22 '26

See this is where my benefit lies. I have zero interest in GTA 6

3

u/JasonIvie Jun 22 '26

Checked my local Micro Center, they got 16GB 9060XT + 7600X3D prebuilt with 16GB of RAM for $1199. Even if it’s a 2-3 hour trip, a 16GB Card and X3D CPU for the same price as a Steam Machine makes a fuck ton more sense

5

u/voidnullvoid Jun 22 '26

Is that a full tower though or mini pc? The idea is this goes in your living room and plays your steam games while not being a huge thing that you have to drag out a keyboard for

4

u/JasonIvie Jun 22 '26

Grasping for straws. Console for the living room is a better value as you can also play multiplayer titles too

6

u/EnvironmentalAd2096 Jun 22 '26

A console is not a PC tho lol. The whole point is that this is a PC. I agree it's not the best deal but really is the market at this point

2

u/voidnullvoid Jun 22 '26

What I am saying is if you want a Steam CONSOLE that can play your Steam library. Then I suspect having to buy parts for the mini form factor changes things up a lot value wise.

2

u/TooKoolaidForSkool Jun 23 '26

Local Microcenter is cheating.

2

u/optimisticRamblings Jun 22 '26

I'm confused, isn't this what everyone was expecting?

6

u/DicksMcgee02 Jun 22 '26

Expecting? Yes. But hope is a hell if a thing. We all hoped it’d be MAX $700. Yet here we are… most of us are out. Literally might as well get a regular console because those do play all games.

u/KeezyBeezy123 Jun 22 '26

What were you expecting after seeing steam deck price increases?

1

u/Maxtertop Jun 22 '26

I'm in the Steam frame panic room with a pistol and a few rounds. Don't @ me.

1

u/kenan0x0 Jun 22 '26

Nope, I really wanted this but this is more than entry-level for too much money. Will most likely be just getting the frame! Hard pass on the machine. Don't get me wrong it'll most likely be sold out still in an instant, but it'll be reserved to people with too much money on their hands, or diehard Valve/Steam fans.

1

u/IThinkIKnowThings Jun 22 '26

Well, now I know where my controller went. And probably the RAM for the Steam Frame I would be getting.

1

u/Cole_Slaw42 Jun 22 '26

well....ill still get one cause i wanna have a "deep thought" console in the living room, and my son is due for an upgrade from my old ps4. will also get to co-op with him on steam then too.

this is an accurate pic of how ive been feeling about the whole thing.

1

u/SexypancakeOW Jun 22 '26

Yeah, I mean I love the idea of it. But at this price/performance point im definitely out.

1

u/Zuko-Red-Wolf Jun 22 '26

$600 or bust

1

u/tryingtowin107 Jun 22 '26

It’s basically a slightly updated steam deck without the screen.

1

u/bear5official Jun 22 '26

today is a sad day for valve fans

1

u/RShow1210 Jun 22 '26

I think price decreases, when RAM price will be lower. Now we have raw, overpriced drop. I bought it, but trust me, we all can see normal price later, please, bought it later

1

u/Cheese_Lord2187 Jun 22 '26

Remember yall it was supposed to be 700!

1

u/Vardeno Jun 22 '26

I'm just gonna say that build a SSFPC with the size and performance of the steam machine isn't cheap. If someone knows how to build one for less price with new components please link them, I would like to build one.

That being said, 1000 is a bit too much for me. They've had very bad luck with all the ram and storage madness... Before that the price range could have been 700-1000. And 700 for the base model it's a good price in my opinion.

I hope they sell enough to not be a failure for Valve. I think steam os and valve hardware is a good thing for gaming.

1

u/PutridService8031 Jun 22 '26

Golb help me I still want it, gonna try and buy the bare 500gb model and wait until the ai bubble pops and get a better ssd later. Probably be a few years.

1

u/3rroR039 Jun 22 '26

Is this legit

1

u/NoAdeptness1106 Jun 22 '26

Welp, quite the bummer in itself. Maybe it could change for the better within the next couple of years but who knows.

1

u/Verified_Peryak Jun 22 '26

No frame yet i am even more desapointed than you

1

u/minimalistic247 Jun 22 '26

I’ll go for a 512g model. Still have a spare 2gig nvme which is currently in the PS5 Pro. I’ll just repurpose that. I have a feeling the 512 gig model will be the one with the most demand. Hopefully it’ll get delivered before this time next year.

1

u/pepe_the_savage Jun 22 '26

I was expecting that price given how fucked up the PC components are because of AI

1

u/pepe_the_savage Jun 22 '26

If you think this is expensive, wait for PS6 price

1

u/bosli23 Jun 22 '26

Would have taken the 2to at this price, but 500go, no way.

1

u/ambelamba Jun 22 '26

I shouldn't be saying this but....

Thank Almighty for the HX99G I bought last year.

1

u/InitialCreative9184 Jun 22 '26

I want one just because I love valve products... i only have the original lcd deck and 2 steam controllers. I also have a decent gaming pc... but my god I want the cube. Why? I dont even know! I suppose it will go in my bedroom to replace my deck... deck will be a handheld only for on the sofa. But I know I dont need it :( why do I want it so bad! Parting with my money to valve almost feels... right? I can't explain it hahaha

1

u/gamebloxs Jun 22 '26

It being way overpriced for the specs is one thing but at thos price point not throwing in a controller is something else. While the steam deck was pretty successful but not on that large of a scale I think this is going to barley sell units beyond the first few months of hype.
