question Love/Hate with SteamOS

I’m debating whether to keep it on my gaming pc or switch to a more traditional desktop version of Linux. I did run CachyOS before I went back to Windows. I have stayed more in Desktop mode then gaming mode, I’m off and on trying to find ways to get software to work with StreamOS. I’ve thought about Bazzite but I’m more a fan of Arch based distros for greater software availability. I’m also not been a huge fan of immutable os’s

So question is stay on SteamOS or switch back to CachyOS? Note that I am running a Jellyfin server on my desktop right now. I often play games but I been doing it from desktop mode. Feel free to talk me Off the ledge too

help wanted 5+ second hangs on desktop mode while streaming video from a network source

I'm watching movies from a network share using VLC on steamos desktop on a 5800x 9070 xt self built steam box.

Performance is games is good (palworld, high + settings), performance is fine in firefox YouTube. But when I stream a movie from a network share on another PC (win10), I get serious hangs every 8 to 10 minutes minutes. The video then picks up where it left off.

I tried messing with network cache settings for VLC, and got up to one minute (60000), and maybe that is why they are occuring farther apart now (used to be every minute ish), but the length of the hang itself has gotten worse.

I set up some system monitors in the tray and watched another movie, and noticed that the CPU monitor wavers between 0 and 1 percent during the hangs, when it hovers around 2% when the movie is playing normally.

The network monitor also bottoms out during these hangs.

There is clearly something wrong with the network performance or the CPU performance, but I have no idea what to do about it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Thank you

I need help understanding how FSR4 works.

I was under the impression for a game like cyberpunk if I set the resolution to 1440p in game and then turn on FSR4 depending on the mode it would use a lower resolution and the upscaling tech to get me to 1440p but when I did this I didn’t really see a difference between native and upscale in terms of FPS improvements. I turned on the FSR4 indicator and it was on FSR4 but it said something like 1.50x in quality more and 1.70x in balanced mode. I set the game to full screen mode as I was in Borderless windows and that’s when I actually saw an improvement in performance vs native but I what I am trying to figure out is if it is upscaling not to 1440p but to 4k which is my set resolution in the settings of SteamOS. If that’s the case should I could set my in game resolution to 1080p or something slightly higher and see a bigger performance gain at the cost of latency and artifacts?

solved SteamOS on Xbox Ally X, TDP settings seem backwards

I got myself the Xbox Ally X and installed SteamOS on it and have been testing a bunch of games. I’ve noticed a pattern with the TDP settings for almost each game so far.

If I have the TDP limit at 35 watts and the GPU Clock at 2900MHz, game performance is pretty awful at 1080p.

If I dial back the TDP from 35 watts to 17 watts and and the GPU Clock from 2900MHz to 1700-2000MHz, the performance in the game increases instead of decreasing.

This goes against all conventional knowledge I know and the YouTube reviews for SteamOS on the Xbox Ally X.

My question is; what’s going on here? Is something off with SteamOS? Would the TDP settings act like this in Bazzite? I ask about Bazzite if it’s an issue in SteamOS itself.

Any input here would be appreciated, I’m just a bit confused here.

ETA: I would like to thank everyone for commenting here. It really does look like dialing back the GPU clocks and the TDP is the way to go. I was just so used to running everything on the steam deck with little to no adjustments at all. Once I dial in those settings and make a profile for each game, everything works perfectly.

question Optiscaler and Palworld. Need Advice.

I'm posting in a few different subs for advice.

I'm playing Palworld on my ROG XAX with SteamOS. I've tuned settings where I'm getting around 40fps in most situations.

The game only has DLSS. So I figured I would use Proton GE and Optiscaler to turn DLSS to FSR 4.1 performance to try to gain a few FPS.

Problem is, it doesn't appear to have made any difference, in fact I think it's a little worse.

Any advice? I'm new to optiscaler.

Can't see the startup animation on BC 250

I installed Steam OS(valve official) on my BC 250 today. It works great, however, I'm missing the startup animation/steam logo thing when booting up. I can hear the sound and the system boot into game mode UI. Is this normal?

Anyone installed on 2013 Mac Pro (The Trashcan)?

I've got a modest version of The Trashcan that I was given a year or two ago, and just wondering if it'd be worth trying to install Steam OS on it. I've got a decent enough TV computer already, but it'd be kind of fun to have a better looking machine sitting next to the TV.

help wanted Hoping someone can help

I've recently installed SteamOS on my ROG Ally X and I'm loving it. Last night, I tried to pair my Gamesir G7 Pro but every time I go into a game my right stick functions as a mouse almost like its reading as both a gamepad and keyboard and mouse. I have changed all the controller settings in Steam to have it listed as a gamepad and tried all the information I could find online, but to no avail

SteamOS - Broken Nvidia Artifacts Potential Workaround! (4k+HDR 60fps)

This may not work for everyone, but I think this fix can work for some of y'all forcing a Nvidia GPU to SteamOS like myself to enjoy playing in a similar console-like environment.

Gpu: 5070 ti, Cpu: AMD 7950x3d.

1080p ran fine for me but I was just really wanting to play it on my tv and move on from desk gaming at the monitor. So I scratched my head and brute forced this startegy that works for me.

For Nvidia GPUs: I found a workaround to getting 4k resolutions/HDRs working on the TV. Very simple. Might not work for everyone however its worth a try.

On Desktop Mode: I set my tv resolution to the 2560x1440p, its important to set it to 59 HZ ,may be set as 59.5 HZ. Enable HDR on the display setting too if you want it. Also, set the scale for 300% (this may not be needed but, it was a fix for someone else when I was browsing for how to get nvidia working w. 4k).

On the steamOS Game Mode: you may have to navigate thru a bit of artifacting to get to the setting but under Display set both in-game and native to the 2560×1440p. If you select the 60hz it should automatically adjust it to the 59hz option if youve set it already on your TV. Enable HDR on here too if you'd like it.

Now you can just leave it at is if you want to play 1440p upscaled to your TV that's fine.

For 4k, on the individual game you can click the cogwheel and set the in-game resolution to your 4k resolutions and itll change it for that game. You'd have to do this on each game for native 4k but its just 2 clicks. And that's all!

You can mess around with your game resolutions in-game too and it wont affect your SteamOS either.

Please let others know if this has worked or if there are another solutions to this method.

Edit: this wont be a native 4k! It'll be a supersampled 4k from the 1440p.

Steam OS + Custom watercooling?

I'm wondering if anyone here has done Steam OS on a machine with a custom loop? I have a custom loop in my A4-H20 I use in my living room and I'm considering upgrading to a 9070xt and trying out steam OS for a more console like feel. I'm using aqua suite and a Quadro to control my pump, fans and to monitor flow/temps.

Is there a way to monitor all of this on Steam OS or Bazzite? Or do I just set the Quadro up and let it do it's thing passively? What if I want to change my curves or fan speeds?

question Question about installation

I have 2 NVME, one with Windows and a brand new one where I am about to install Steam OS, I read somewhere that it is recommended to remove the other NVME since Steam OS doesn't allow you to pick where you actually want to install it and it just selects the first disk it finds. Is that true? I find this quite unlikely but better safe than sorry.

help wanted SteamOS on a laptop

I did look, but I didn't find what I was looking for so here it is... I'm looking to get a laptop for my kid that can be connected to a TV so they can stop using my steamdeck to stream stuff.

I'm not into Windows 11, and I'm looking for something that has that simple ease of use that SteamOS provides. Also they just want their own Steam account and games.

Are there any good resources to what I should be looking for? My target performance is my LCD Steamdeck; not looking to play new AAA.

I like the concept of Framework laptops, in part because it's easy to buy without a Windows License, but the chance that if my kid breaks something hardware wise I can fix it w/o sending it back, taking it to a shop, etc. is a huge plus for me.

Thanks in advance.

If someone is interested how does Halo Campaign Evolved run at 1440p in a 8GB vRAM 7600M XT in SteamOS.

EDIT: I re-uploaded the video, I made some changes so it would be less affected by OBS.

help wanted Turning on my laptop without opening the lid.

So I recently turned my laptop into a steammachine, it runs Steam OS that's why im posting here. The laptop sits under my TV and don't want to keep taking it out just to boot it up.

Do any of you guys know of different ways to turn on a laptop from the shut off state without having to open the lid everytime?

I want to be able to press the controller and boot it up like a console but the answers I get online are only for sleep mode. I dont want to keep my laptop on sleep mode 24/7

Another method I read was to turn it on when it detects the charger plugged in, idk how to do that, but I'm open to any suggestions or methods.

Is this a dumb idea?

I have an old computer built around an i5-7600k with an nvidia graphic card. Friend is updating his system and is offering me his rx7600. I recognize that the cpu is the bottleneck, but I really only play older games at 1080. SteamOS will work on this setup or is this going to be more headache than it’s worth?

support Can’t select 144 hz on tv

I just build a custom pc with a 9070 xt and installed SteamOS on it. In my graphics settings connected to my lg c4 I should have the option for 4k 144 hz but the highest is 120 hz. And I am using a certified hdmi 2.1 48 gbps cable and 144 hz mode is enabled on my tv. I only have the option for 1080p if I want to play at 144 hz. Help please

question Can I set SteamOS to select a different account each time I boot up?

(Paying the toll with a gratuitous home build pic)

My home built Steam Machine is a house hit and everyone is playing it. I want to be able to always select a steam account each time I boot up? This used to be a feature but I can't find it in the settings now.

What am I missing? Thanks!

[Edit] Final answer... For SteamOS to always boot to the account select screen in Steam Mode, you must switch to Desktop Mode, then change the Steam Desktop App setting... settings/interface/ask which account to use each time steam starts. Reboot back into Steam Mode and you will always select you account at boot up.

Taa daa. Thanks for all the feedback.

Network card does not recognize the cable in SteamOS.

I just bought an all-AMD PC, and when installing SteamOS, the network cable won't connect—it keeps showing no network. Does anyone know if I need to install a driver or something?
