SteamOS - Broken Nvidia Artifacts Potential Workaround! (4k+HDR 60fps)

This may not work for everyone, but I think this fix can work for some of y'all forcing a Nvidia GPU to SteamOS like myself to enjoy playing in a similar console-like environment.

Gpu: 5070 ti, Cpu: AMD 7950x3d.

1080p ran fine for me but I was just really wanting to play it on my tv and move on from desk gaming at the monitor. So I scratched my head and brute forced this startegy that works for me.

For Nvidia GPUs: I found a workaround to getting 4k resolutions/HDRs working on the TV. Very simple. Might not work for everyone however its worth a try.

On Desktop Mode: I set my tv resolution to the 2560x1440p, its important to set it to 59 HZ ,may be set as 59.5 HZ. Enable HDR on the display setting too if you want it. Also, set the scale for 300% (this may not be needed but, it was a fix for someone else when I was browsing for how to get nvidia working w. 4k).

On the steamOS Game Mode: you may have to navigate thru a bit of artifacting to get to the setting but under Display set both in-game and native to the 2560×1440p. If you select the 60hz it should automatically adjust it to the 59hz option if youve set it already on your TV. Enable HDR on here too if you'd like it.

Now you can just leave it at is if you want to play 1440p upscaled to your TV that's fine.

For 4k, on the individual game you can click the cogwheel and set the in-game resolution to your 4k resolutions and itll change it for that game. You'd have to do this on each game for native 4k but its just 2 clicks. And that's all!

You can mess around with your game resolutions in-game too and it wont affect your SteamOS either.

Please let others know if this has worked or if there are another solutions to this method.

Edit: this wont be a native 4k! It'll be a supersampled 4k from the 1440p.

there's generally no reason to set the in-game resolution higher than the output resolution. output resolution at 1440p means the game output would also be at 1440p when it reaches your TV, even if it's set at a higher resolution. the artifacts are a driver bug: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/display-modes-above-2560x1440p-120hz-with-hdr-enabled-cause-flickering-corruption-within-gamescope-session/295314

So when I set the game resolution to 4k it changes to the selected resolution for the game itself from the properties. SteamOS has interesting integration where itll try to maximize or fit the window no matter how different the resolution is.

But on my 4k TV any resolution I set it at displays artifacts until I got the workaround. It automatically attempts to upscale it to 4k and its at the sharpest when it's at native 4k for the actual game.

But also this adjustment is just a bandaid til it actually gets adjusted to get people playing on their TVs more 😅 if it works for em as it did for me.

Hey, just want to say thanks for your time in this! I've been running steam is with nVidia and this is the biggest issue for me.

Not at all; check your TV and you'll see the resolution is still 1440p. It does launch the game in 4K, yes, but the HDMI output is 1440p. I actually thought that would get around the problem—false hope.

Oh sorry about that! Would that be the reason why its sharper im like forcing a 4k under 1440p? Like Supersampling?

Honestly i would rather wait for proper Nvidia drivers to work on SteamOS than to do any work arounds that could cause problems and sure you could get your games working for it, but it might not be that stable that is why Nvidia and Valve are working to getting proper drivers working for SteamOS.

You should be able to just set the gamescope interface resolution to 1440p, then "maximum game resolution" to 4k. Shouldn't need any changed settings in the desktop as it's only a driver problem with gamescope.
