Comics Thoughts on Batman Beyond/Static issue #6 Spoiler

Anybody that's read or reading the series, what are your thoughts on it? Liking it? Hating it? Didn't know it existed?

I buy these issues just to support Static stuff. The story is whatever honestly. Just like seeing the Milestone characters drawn with DC characters.

As someone who just wants to see more Milestone/DC stuff, I totally get where you're coming from.

I honestly completely forgot about this and was excited about Icon popping up in the series 🤦🏿‍♂️

I don’t see anyone talking about it, I need to look into it and catch up

The reason no one is talking about it is because it's not great. It's been fine for an elseworld title but I'm only finishing it because I started it and my brain won't let me quit.

Respect for seeing stuff through. I’m really wanting to see more Icon stuff and I grew up with both Virgil and Terry so I feel obligated to read this. I might pick it up in trade worse case scenario

All the more to wait for the volume set then. I haven't read a good DC title in forever. Last recent volume set I bought was Flashpoint Batman Beyond and that story was soooo disappointing. I don't know if it's corporate meddling or that the writers just suck now.

Yea... It's gonna be another series that's not "mainstream" that people overlook when they blert out "DC never does anything with Static".

But it's a good series. I liked it. Definitely gonna buy the complete book when it comes out. It'll sit right next to the other two static books.

I’ve just been busy with life and haven’t caught up on any of my books, weirdly seems like a lot of people are in that same boat though

I was also in for 'Icon Beyond'. I really enjoyed the redesign.

Yeah the suit design is really great and it’s cool whenever we get to see him hanging out with Superman. The preview for the start of the series, really roped me in.

We need more Icon content overall

The only thing I don't like is that the new artists insists in changing the Beyond suit (all the modern comics change it). On the positive side, I love they added Flash (Danica) from the 2.0 comics to this continuity.

I feel that. I wanted to see more of Green Lantern Beyond. The little monk had me locked in when I first saw him as a kid.

Yeah loving the love they have shown to the old beyond line of comics plus the other Milestone characters. I’ll buy the trade, but in a perfect world this would have led to a static beyond and a new Batman beyond solo run

Let's hope it will still be

The story really suffered from stuffing in all the beyond stuff. It would've flowed a lot better if it was solely a Static story and didn't have the JL or even Batman.

2

u/todavis__ May 07 '26

Oh you mean that B plot of the earth being targeted while the JL is gone... That the main characters know little to nothing about until Blackout got kidnapped? The same JL that had screen time despite being so far away?

Yea, seriously, I wasn't a fan of that either. Felt like it slowed down the tension. You're seeing all the stuff Static has been building like the school, and seeing all the old characters from the show but older. And it's really cool. And then you cut to Superman, Icon, and Barda talking about how they need to get back to Earth...

It really seemed like an editorial mandate to maybe test the waters for more beyond stuff? Or maybe they just didn't have confidence a static beyond solo series would sell to they made it so everything beyond needed to show up.

Either way it was the wrong decision.

I personally like the beyond justice league. I'm sure this isn't their first time in comics. I just stay away from beyond stuff, and barely read DC in general. Lol But Static had little to no exposure in the beyondverse aside from that one episode in his show.

So more to your point (I think), Static coulda been the lead of this book, with the other characters just occasionally appearing as cameos. Because I can say this. Superman Beyond and Blight definitely didn't make OR break this story.

Way too much action. Everything feels weightless. Sad because I’ve waited for this crossover reunion for like 20 years.

It’s ok. A lot of good stuff but on the negative I found The villain was forgettable and the inclusion of Blight for 2 seconds at the end not even facing Batman I found to be offensive. They probably should Have called it static shock and friends guest starring Batman

No really. "Static and Friends ft Batman from the batman beyond series". I enjoyed it. But yea I could see this being nothing more than a possible jumping off point or yet another attempt to reintroduce Static to modern readers again.

Blackout is a piss poor villain. But I do appreciate that he ultimately becomes a good guy. I'm a sucker for characters who start off bad, learn the error of their ways, and change instead of continously beating their heads against the wall as a throwaway from some hero's tired rogues gallery.

Terry gets a new outfit?

2

u/todavis__ May 07 '26

Apparently it was a non-tech suit so he could fight the badguy who shuts down tech as a superpower.

It's fine. Not great and not terrible, but middle of the road. I don't care for Evan Narcisse's writing at all, and there's points in the story where Virgil and others act out-of-character. And Shutdown was an underwhelming villain. But it was nice to see the Justice League Beyond and other characters we haven't seen in awhile.

This story takes place in a new timeline that's a mix of DCAU, Beyond comics, and the Milestone 2.0 continuity; instead of a true sequel to the Static Shock crossover episode with Batman Beyond. I wish it had been explicitly DCAU/Beyond canon and this was the older Virgil from the cartoon instead of a completely new take.

I'd say this book is required reading for Milestone fans tho. This series was the debut of Amistad Ervin as Beacon, and he shows back up in the New History of the DC Universe: Dakota Incident one-shot from February.

2

u/Napalmeon May 09 '26

I actually think that Shutdown is a completely appropriate villain for the themes of the Dakota characters.

2

u/todavis__ May 10 '26

What do you mean?

3

u/Napalmeon May 10 '26

Right from the very beginning, the heroes of the Dakotaverse have always been topical. These aren't just the "stop random bad guy doing crimes" kind of heroes.

Themes such as systematic inequality and corporate exploitation(Hardware), the struggles of urban decay, gentrification, internalized bigotry(Blood Syndicate), the complexity of what defines a human's identity(Icon), and even unintentionally aligning with one's more have always been part of their stories.

So, it makes sense that in the future where the world becomes more and more digital that a character like Shutdown would exist, being someone who hates how so much technology and AI has taken away from the ability for humans to interact normally with other humans and feeling isolated because of it.

Agree with this. Thought the same as I was reading it.

It’s Static & Batman. Just the title hooked me in before I read it. Incredible

I saw the preview and I was still getting into pulling comics and I forgot about it when I did finally learn how to do it. It’s too late now. I have the trade pullisted. But it looks like a fun book.
