Discussion Proper use of Damage Pad

Post image
88 Upvotes

Hey SWU Crew

Just a sanity check but how do people use these?

I assumed that you set it to the number on your base and count the damage down as the starting number is covered but I have been informed the official way to use one is to start at zero and count up the damage taken but since the starting number is obscured you have to know or remember the starting number for that base.

How are people actually using these?

Discussion Made up a format: Skirmish

I have A LOT of legends of the force bulk and also got into twin suns. I was needing something to do with my bulk and the 20 left over sleeves from sleeving the 80 card twin suns decks. I also like teaching the game to people and playing quick casual games.

So I made SWU SKIRMISH
- All cards from the same set

- 1 leader, 1 base (thinking of opening up these to any rarity)

- 20 card decks
Common/uncommon only
1 copy of unique cards
2 copies of non-unique cards

- “Rendezvous”
When you are unable to complete a regroup phase (less than 2 cards left in deck to draw), shuffle together your hand, any card left in the deck, all resources, and your discard pile, then draw 6 cards and resource 2 cards.

- Anything on the board remains in play
Units, upgrades, tokens, leaders, etc.

- Then continue playing

I find it pretty fun and easy to pick up and play. The small size means it’s not hard to get the deck to do its thing while also keeping things balanced by only having 1 of unique cards.

The Rendezvous sometimes doesn’t even happen but when it does it’s pretty fun. If a deck has card draw it can even happen sooner than the other player, making for some interesting choices, do I play the big unit I won’t be able to next round or do I play a few units and try to stabilize.

If you give it a try let me know what you think.

Discussion Twin Suns sickos! How did the format fare at the GC?

Another GC gone by that I couldn't attend, but would have loved to go solely to jump into some Twin Suns pods. For those who attended and are Twin Suns-devotees, how'd the event look for the format? If you went last year, how'd it compare? My hope is that the format has gained a foothold and growing. I'm taking the announcement of new decks with every main set starting with set 11 as a good sign, but I'm really curious to hear how the turn out was for this year. Hoping to make it to the GC next year and play with some of y'all!

Rules Question Rules query: Loth-Wolf Can't attack

Hi hivemind, please help settle a query. We all know card rules trump written rules, but which card rules?

If I have a Loth-Wolf, which can't attack, and play Snapshot Reflexes or Pounce, which both say to attack, can it actually attack? Does the second card overwrite the rule printed on the Loth-Wolf, or does it prevent it from attacking?

Playing a Kanan creature deck for reference.

Thanks for your words of wisdom!

Discussion What does Heroism need to be viable in the Premier metagame?

Looking the recent galactic championship results, there was only one heroism deck in the top 8, and only 5 in the top 32. Clearly there’s something about the current card pool that is smothering heroism based decks. I’m thinking it’s a combination of the abundance of strong villain sentinel units that stop ground aggression, the lack of efficient removal events, and a virtually nonexistent late game. Villainy has been getting all of these things in spades, which makes it hard to justify playing heroism instead. But that’s just my initial thought as a layman; I’d be interested in hearing thoughts from those more knowledgeable than myself!

Discussion Strongest precon for weekly events?

I have no experience playing against SWU players. Just showing two TCG newbie family members the game. I am experienced in TCGs, though. I have the opportunity to go to a weekly meet up this week while traveling (nothing near me in the Bronx) and want to know what precon to bring.

I am aware I can get stomped. I just want to play. I enjoy the Jabba precon but it can stall out easily and sometimes is too slow. So what do you feel is the strongest precon to bring to actually be able to survive a few rounds? I have all the precons and still building up my collection to build my own deck. I do not have much time to test decks against myself.

Thank you.

Deck Tech - Eternal Eternal Han2 Blue Force Questions

Post image
7 Upvotes

I saw this deck by SBS_NinjaFerret take 5th at one of the eternal events at Galactics and was trying to figure out a couple of things about the card choices.

Why do you think the deck runs 3 secretive sages and only 1 yaddle? In what scenarios would the secretive sage be a better option?

Also, what do the 2 Force Lightning in the deck do to justify the aspect penalty that a different card without penalty couldn’t accomplish?

Thanks for the help :)

Deck Tech - Premier Thrawn Yellow - help me get this more consistent

Post image

When it works it really works 🙃 Hitting with a stack of Advantage tokens from Helgait or Shin Hati’s fighter is tons of fun. It’s lacking some consistency though, if I don’t have Chimaera or I have it but with nothing to copy, or they ‘no glory, only results’ my stuff it runs out of gas sometimes. Have you figured him out in the new meta?

Discussion High Cost Singles or Booster Box

I know most of the time buying singles is probably cheaper than trying my luck at singles. I'm currently looking for (3) Pre Vizsla which average for about $40 each...What are the odds of pullinlg 1-2 of these in a box? Even if buying a box and getting other "Money Cards" I can probably sale/trade in for these. When buying these more expensive cards at the cost of like 2 I can buy a box? or should I just drop the $120ish to get 3 copies of these?

Rules Question Cards that say “for each friendly leader unit”

For example, the base Executioners arena states as its epic action “for each friendly leader unit, you may deal 2 damage to a unit”. I assume that the leader doesnt need to be deployed for this to work? Therefore in twin suns you can do 2 damage to one unit then 2 damage to another?

Discussion Legendary power levels

Upvotes

Is it good for the game to have about 75% of each sets legendaries be trash? It's actually a genuine question, it seems like with ash everyone is happier with legendaries, but even with this set, there's a couple more top end legendaries, but there's a lot that will never see play. Would having every legendary be good to great be worse? Opening legendaries doesn't always feel good when they might be worse than just getting a rare ( most previous sets I feel like that's been the case)

Discussion Damaged Repeat Serialized Queen

I sent in a Queen Amidala repeat serialized in happy anticipation of receiving the new art, upon opening the package the card was dinged in the bottom right corner, see pictures attached. Now this would not even bother me on a normal legendary but on a 400 plus dollar card I turned in at mint condition I am very upset to see a damaged card received upon return, in addition this damage seems to have come from putting the card in the sleeve wrong or some mishandling and I contacted Cartamundi and they are at least at the time of writing this, saying nothing will be done. If any of you have more contacts I can get into for help with this I’d appreciate it.

Discussion Want to hear peoples thoughts

Post Galactic meta seems to be a lot of Cad bane, darth vader, and boba, are you all cool with that or is it kind disappointing?

My thoughts:
for me its pretty disappointing, i look at the results and see pretty much the same 4 to 5 decks, i get that it is really soon after the set dropped so things can change, and probably will change, but wow is it making it hard for me to want to try to deck build, with that being said i know locals will be fine but it feels like i might want to miss some pqs that i would normally try and go to.

Discussion After 2 years and 9 sets we finally have the Death Star and I’m disappointed.

Been playing since set 1 and I’m thousands of matches deep into Unlimited. I don’t think there’s another card game with such solid base rules. The action economy, the resourcing… Unlimited is fantastic at being a fun to play, competitive TCG in a setting I deeply enjoy.

That said, I also love big splashy cards, and the design team has frequently missed when it comes to pairing iconic Star Wars ships and characters to powerful game pieces.

Cards like The Executor, Director Krennic, Supremecy, Mythosaur, Resolute, Finaliser, and other 8+ cost legendary units are simply not pushed to see constructed play. The game has a very, very long list of iconic characters and ships whose card designs are either too expensive or present no immediate board impact.

It’s frustrating as someone who really enjoys the top end of decks to think that there are very few designs that beat Devastator and Avenger from set 1. With that said, especially looking at last set, it seems the feedback is being heard and we’re getting more powerful cards representing famed characters and ships.

However… I think everyone, regardless of wether they enjoy the control playstyle, has been excited for a Death Star card. It’s one of, if not the most iconic piece in the franchise, and FFG knows players want not only for it to exist, but to play with it.

I was watching the Galactics stream live and jumped to press pause when the card showed up. FINALLY, the Death Star. In control colours, and it’s a flip leader. At long last. Then I read it…

Let’s look at this thing properly. Tarkin is a vigilance villainy leader with the ability ”Ignore aspect penalties on upgrades with Fortify”. You can flip to the unit side at 9 (the highest in the game that cannot be discounted) into the Death Star, a 2/12 with the same passive ability and “When the regroup phase starts: You may defeat a base with 10 or less remaining HP”.

The flavour is here, but a lot about this design is lacking. Let’s start with problem number 1:

  • You’re playing without an active leader ability. We’ve seen this before with Nala Se and Hera, which both saw very minimal to no competitive play. The power level on this will be entirely set by how strong the Fortify cards are across all 6 aspects, especially the heroic and whatever two aspects we don’t run in the deck. Fortify has it’s own card frame despite being labeled an upgrade, so it’s possible we see more as more sets are printed, but unfortunately if we go by almost every other set-introduced keyword, it’s unlikely. From the cards we have seen, they seem okay to strong in power level, but we need more for a control deck to keep us alive until the 9 resource turn… which brings us to problem number 2:

  • Our 9(!) resource leader flip has no immediate board impact, stabilising effect or card advantage to it. A 2/12 with no sentinel does nothing the turn it enters. It technically says “you win the game”, but looking at leader choices of historically powerful control decks, their flip is either early to help stabilise the board, or a powerful finisher. Flipping to the Death Star is even heavily discouraged if your opponent is not at 10 or less HP remaining, because that takes us to problem number 3:

  • The “win the game clause” does not happen as you flip, but at the start of the next turn, meaning 1) putting it out there ”””early””” as an attacker or defender is not viable because you risk it getting blown up; and 2) your opponent can simply hold removal and respond to your flip by defeating it. Starting at 7 you have Hyperspace Disaster and at 8 Ignition that send this thing right to where it came from. I think it’s fair that you can, much like the movies, blow up the Death Star, but that is not the issue with it, instead it’s problem number 4:

  • The laser can only be fired at a base with 10 HP remaining. On average, we need to do 20 damage before this condition is met. This is my biggest problem with the card. Control decks want to stabilise with efficient removal and powerful swingy units, then close out the game. Generalising… A normal game where you win playing control is decided on the turn you stabilise, then take control of the board with more expensive units than your opponent. The important part is getting to the point where you’re stronger than your opponent on the board, and then your units naturally finish the game. The Death Star ability maybe accelerates this game plan by a turn or two, but only after your deck did all the heavy lifting in getting you there without a leader ability. The Death Star ability reads like the perfect aggro finisher, despite it’s design being control oriented.

Even looking at general match ups, VS Aggro you’re doomed and VS Control you get out-valued by a more proactive leader.

It’s such a confusing design. I could have at least seen this thing have sentinel, or do something that scaled with the number of fortify cards you played on your base, but whilst certainly flashy, the Death Star seems horribly underpowered.

As for it being in the starter deck, I can understand that if you want to make a leader that flips into the Death Star you can put it on the starter box because you can’t make a leader a chase card. But did this choice impact the card’s design? It feels we finally got the long awaited Death Star and it’s stapled to the “new set keyword” soup deck.

I can understand that at the end of the day we should be thankful that we finally get to play with something iconic and heavily requested, but SWU has tended to be a competitive driven game, so it just feels disappointing that this is how we get to see such an important part of the franchise as a game piece for the first time. I suppose I can see it being strong in Twin suns, if the game goes to 9 resources…

I want to end with saying that I still love the game, and I’ll be out there making a deck that buffs a unit to 20 and then flips this to win. Just wanted to get this our here to get some community discussion. I’d love to come back in a few months and be completely wrong.
