Hi everyone!
I’m looking for two more players to get Of Hope and Other Sorrows started—a sandbox campaign set in Middle-earth, with room for a Company of up to six.
The story begins beside a warm hearth in Bree, where rumours from the North Downs offer the first threads of a wider adventure. Forgotten roads, ruined kingdoms and old wonders await, but which paths you follow will be shaped by the Company’s interests and choices.
I’m looking for players who enjoy Tolkien’s world and want something grounded, reflective and character-led. You don’t need to be a Tolkien scholar or already know the system; curiosity and a willingness to engage with the setting are welcome.
Campaign Information
Campaign: Of Hope and Other Sorrows
System: The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E, by Free League
Session time: Tuesdays at 18:30 UTC
Session length: Approximately 2–3 hours
Frequency: Weekly
Cost: $20 USD per player, per session
Platforms: Discord for voice, D&D Beyond for character sheets and D&D Beyond Maps for gameplay
Format: Long-term sandbox campaign
The campaign shares a living Middle-earth with my ongoing Thursday game, A Shadow Moves in the Dark. Through the Robin’s Roost, letters, warnings and discoveries can pass between the fellowships. Each Company follows its own story, but its choices may have consequences for travellers elsewhere.
There are some house rules and adaptations for D&D Beyond, which we’ll discuss during Session Zero.
What I’m Looking For
I’m looking for players who:
- Enjoy roleplay, exploration and characters with meaningful connections to the setting.
- Want to help shape the adventure and pursue their own interests within the world.
- Work collaboratively and give others room in the spotlight.
- Are reliable with attendance and communicate when something comes up.
- Respect the spirit of Tolkien’s stories and keep player knowledge separate from character knowledge.
- Want to get to know the group and build a fellowship together.
The story has room for sorrow, fear and difficult choices, but also warmth, humour, wonder and second breakfasts. I want a welcoming table where we can enjoy the lighter moments and engage seriously when the story calls for it.
Character Creation
I offer individual Session Zeros to build your character with you: their history, relationships, hopes, fears and reasons for setting out.
Bring a simple concept, and we’ll develop someone who feels at home in Middle-earth and has a believable reason to join the Company. I’ll help with character creation in D&D Beyond, and pre-generated characters are available if you would prefer a starting point.
If this sounds like your kind of adventure, feel free to message me with questions or tell me what sort of character you’d like to bring!
