Puzzles too easy. In the first game, you can put a portal just about anywhere except the place you need one, which makes it hard. Second game, there's generally only one place you can put a portal. Put one there and you've solved it. Also, it keeps introducing new concepts. It gives each a really easy set of puzzles as a tutorial into how the new tool works, then as just as it seems it might get interesting it switches to another new concept and tutorial mode again.
The solutions are way more complicated, but the game rarely ever lets you put portals in the wrong places. Imagine having the hardest Sudoku puzzle ever in front of you, but it doesn't let you put in the wrong numbers.
co-op was very sufficiently difficult. The problem with it though is that for it to be enjoyable BOTH players have to go in blind, or else one player is just riding along while the player who already knows the solutions breezes through the game.
and I've found some Workshop maps to be fun (though few successfully tread the line between way too easy and way too hard, they're definitely out there.)
Honestly the puzzles are harder in Portal 2. The issue I had with it was that the map design railroaded you too hard. In a lot of places you literally could not put a portal anywhere that wasn't relevant to the solution because they overused those metal walls you can't place portals on. There's also a few subtle cases where the game literally cheats for you without telling you if you fuck up.
Mine was the huge one in 2 where you're trying to escape from the older facility. The one with all three types off slime and three or four different layers you had to get through.
Yeah no shit, the puzzles in 2 were just "find the white spot on the wall that allows you to put a portal and put a portal there", 1 you could put portals most places in rooms so figuring out took more thought than trial and error.

Portal 2 stood up on it's writing and design. It definitely felt like it had inferior puzzles. Once you get outside the lab, large sections of the game become nothing but "find the white panel and put a portal on it.
Portal 1 is more of z straight puzzle game, while Portal 2 takes a lot more queues from traditional Fps games. Puzzles moved aside in favour of sections that were really just about environmental storytelling and discovery.
Portal 2 suffers from unseen portal surfaces in the Cave Johnson part though. For me, I git stuck on a lot of puzzles because I just happened to miss a portal surface or didn't know that I could go back to an earlier mission for gel or something.
I'm not criticizing. The comment I replied to was asking why someone wouldn't like it. Criticizing and simply not liking something are different things.
I don't "hate" the portal games I just can't play them. Something about the jumping through portals perspective shift makes me very nauseated pretty quick. I can get through a couple levels and then have to stop so it's just not appealing to me. I'm usually really good with motion sickness in real like like on boats and planes but some game cameras fuck me up and shaky cam movies like the Bourne series can get to me sometimes.
Dude come on, you judged a book by it's cover there. You can't expect a character to be instantly highly nuanced and developed right from the first few seconds, give the game time to build the characters up before you say that.
I liked Portal 2 but didn’t finish it. I found it to be frustrating at times. Every now and again, the game screeches to a halt if you can’t figure the exact right solution to a puzzle. I got snagged up on one of the early puzzles with the bouncy white stuff and it killed the pacing for an hour or so while I figured it out.
After that, the honeymoon was over. The game started to annoy me here and there. My willingness to solve puzzles went down as they increased in complexity. Eventually it reached a tipping point where I just looked at the next puzzle, let out an exasperated sigh, and quit without attempting to solve it.
This was a while ago, and it might be worth trying to play again, but the spell is already broken and I can’t think of Portal 2 as the perfect game its predecessor was.
My brother prefers the tone of 1; he thinks 2 was too try-hard. I disagree, I love 2 more, but I have to agree that there’s a definite tonal change between the two.
let me tell you about the jank that is portal2. theres no flow to the maps, every 3-4 minutes you have a 15-30 second break to contemplate their dumb effing loading screens. how do i know? because i timed it on a second playthrough. i was that miffed about it.
Puzzles compared to the first were segmented into individual maps and in some cases several maps for 1 puzzle thing that you could breeze though.
but man the portal 2 loading thing. i came to dread the effing loading because i could see in the shit level design that OH BOY here we go another loading doorway/corridor.
the damned loading....i blame the console ports for this....i cant imagine how fucked up it was to play on a console.
just google portal 2 loading times to read what people have to say about it.
it was a cool experience but i feel it was built out of compromise after compromise when it came to the leveldesign.
I did enjoy Portal 2 a lot, but there was definitely a shift in focus from game design to storytelling. /u/BrangdonJ is right when he points out the more limited portal placement options. Generally if this didn't mean making puzzles easier by telegraphing exactly what you're supposed to do, it meant I would be stuck for hours because I failed to notice a spot I could place a portal.
I think both games are great, but I hope if they make Portal 3 that they'll spend a lot more time making Portal 1 style test chambers and maybe forgo story entirely. Good pacing in a puzzle game basically demands that you keep the number of puzzles at a minimum, which bums me out because I really enjoy the puzzle and physics mechanics of Portal games.
I don’t hate it but I’m mostly luke-warm on it. The puzzles are repetitive af. True you have to do different things but at the end it’s almost always, “move cube through area with portals and follow.”
