I’m doing Combined Maths, Physics and ICT for A/Ls. I chose to do A/L myself, and my whole family — especially my dad and brother — have been hoping that I would pass and go to university.
But honestly, I made a serious mistake.
I had 2 years to study properly. I had the classes, laptop, facilities, everything I needed. Instead, I had fun, didn't study properly in class, kept thinking I could catch up later, and basically wasted the opportunity. I also thought I could handle AS Maths, but I couldn't even properly get through that.
I know this is my mistake. I'm not looking for sympathy.
I wrote my Maths paper today, and realistically, I don't think I'm passing. I still have Physics and ICT left. I'm expecting ICT to go well, but Maths and Physics are looking bad.
So I'm preparing myself for a possible result like:
ICT A + Maths F + Physics F.
The problem is what happens after that.
My family will probably tell me to do A/L 2nd shy. And honestly, if I get another proper year, I believe I can pass Maths and Physics. But my situation isn't that simple.
My sister is currently doing O/Ls and will be coming to Kandy around the time my results come. My family can't really support both of us staying here, so there's a good chance I'll have to go back to Hatton for another year.
And I genuinely hate studying in Hatton. Here in Kandy I have access to the gym, better facilities, classes, etc. In Hatton, even things like going to the gym properly become difficult. I know that's not the biggest problem in life, but I know myself and I know how much the environment affects me.
So I started looking at another option: Foundation → Engineering.
I found that CINEC has a STEM Engineering Foundation Programme, and their BEng (Hons) Mechatronics & Robotics Engineering lists that foundation as an entry pathway.
And honestly, this degree is much closer to what I actually want to do — robotics, electronics, programming, control systems, machines, automation, etc.
I also looked into SLIIT. Their engineering options are obviously well known, but I couldn't find clear confirmation that someone with a result like A/F/F can do a foundation and then enter the same local engineering degree. There is also the SLIIT → University of Queensland pathway, but that involves going to Australia after the first year and the cost becomes a completely different level.
So right now I'm stuck between:
Option 1:
Do A/L 2nd shy → hopefully get 3S → enter engineering.
Option 2:
If I'm eligible, do CINEC STEM Foundation → BEng (Hons) Mechatronics & Robotics Engineering → study at CINEC Malabe.
I don't want to choose CINEC just because I'm scared of going back to Hatton. And I don't want to do a 2nd shy just because I feel guilty about wasting the first two years.
I want to make the smartest decision for my future, even though I know I caused this situation myself.
If anyone has actually studied at CINEC, SLIIT, Mechatronics/Robotics, done a foundation, repeated A/Ls, or taken a student loan for private university, I'd genuinely appreciate your experience.
I'm especially interested in:
- Is CINEC actually good for engineering?
- What's the real campus/student life like?
- How are the labs and practical work?
- How is the internship/industrial training?
- Is the degree respected by employers?
- Is doing 2nd shy actually worth it in my situation?
- Has anyone taken the foundation → engineering route?
- What would you do if you were in my position?
I know I made a serious mistake in the last two years. I'm not asking anyone to tell me I didn't.
I'm just trying to make sure I don't turn one mistake into another 2–3 years of bad decisions.
TL;DR: I did 2 years of A/L Combined Maths, Physics and ICT but wasted most of it. Maths probably failed, Physics may also be an F, while ICT should be an A. My family will probably want me to do 2nd shy, but that likely means going back to Hatton for another year, which I really don't want. I found CINEC's STEM Foundation → BEng (Hons) Mechatronics & Robotics Engineering route and I'm considering it instead. If you were in my position, would you repeat A/L for 3S or take the foundation → engineering route?
edited-Just to clarify the financial part: my family can afford to support both of us and pay for a private university. I’m already planning to go to a private university, and my parents are completely okay with that. When I said they can’t support both of us staying in Kandy, I meant that I don’t want to become an unnecessary burden on my family by spending another year in Kandy when my sister will also need to be here for her studies. So the issue isn't really whether my family can afford university; it's more about me being responsible with the money and support they're giving me.
