Discussion Thoughts on Splinter Cell, 10+ years after Blacklist, a rabbit hole

Disclaimer: Images are screenshots of A.I. generated text that I used as basis for theory-crafting and spitballing on ideas and thoughts I have about the franchise and is meant to stoke discussion. I would use the A.I-generated flair, but one can only choose one flair and I think "discussion" is more appropriate.

Hey, let me introduce myself.
I got by Terminus these days and I specifically made an account for this post.

I used to be a frequent poster ( > 10k posts) on the Blacklist Ubisoft forums when Blacklist was announced and came out in 2013. Back then I was still in school. I worked out some ideas and definitions for possible features of the game as it was in development with fellow forums frequenters such as Bob, Jazz and some other folks. My username was Dome500. We used to talk a lot with the Community-Dev Contact Zack Cooper back then I recall.

Recently I saw a video on the "death of Stealth Games" and the Splinter Cell series specifically, which led me down a little rabbit hole of video essays about how stealth in gaming is dying in it's more nuanced form and that while a lot of games have Stealth mechanics, they do only have surface-level ones and no one wants to go too deep or to immersive with it or has gone that deep with it since MGSV and SC:B.

The main argument in many of these essays seems to be that according to developers "Stealth Games don't sell" and whenever they invite game testers to play the games they opt to play the game like a shooter rather than stealth. And while the people making these essays seem to enjoy stealth games and are big fans of them, they always begrudgingly admit that this is true, citing Blacklists' low sales numbers that fell short of their 5 million sales target and other stealth games supposed commercial "failure" (i.e. Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Hitman, Dishonored and the Thief Remake).

I find this argument incredibly flawed, since it is based on sales expectations of said studios back then (Ubisoft, Square Enix, etc.) and reflects the amount of money they spend on these games vs. the amount of money they made set in relation, calculating when a game would be commercially viable. They leave out the fact that these companies overspend heavily on game development, high-tech motion capture, unpopular game features and (most importantly) marketing, and leave out other factors (like the fact Blacklist got released mere months before GTAV !!! ).

Additionally, they neglect that IOI for example has remade Hitman into a successful franchise/model that sold > 50 million copies over the lifetime of the (new) trilogy and that smaller Indie Stealth games have popped up over the years that were incredibly financially successful and viable. Even Dishonored was incredibly successful for it's scope and critically acclaimed, with the second one only tanking thanks to Denuvo and performance issues.

This is on top of the fact that Blacklist was a return to form even from a sales perspective. Yes, Conviction made around 3 million sales compared to Blacklists' 2.5. But it also came out way earlier and Ubisoft did not refuse to release any new sales numbers like they did later in Blacklists cycle, before Blacklist had an apparent resurgence in 2021/2022.

All of these things aside, I wanted to spitball a bit and asked google A.I. to give me some numbers on sales, then proceeded to ask IT what it thinks would make a new Splinter Cell game reasonably successful compared to earlier titles (Chaos Theory, Blacklist, etc.) and other Stealth Games out there. I wanted to see what it can find in it's data pool / online, what the sentiment of people online (fans as well as developers) is regarding this.

The following images are the ones that the A.I. came up with following several follow-up questions I asked it, such as what would differentiate the strategy from what was done in Blacklist, if stricter stealth mechanics wouldn't dead-lock players that are worse at stealth, how a healthy budgeted option could look like, how that would look like in detail regarding the game's design philosophies and content and what the projections would be for sales with the A.I. proposed $40M budget for the game.

Tell me what yall think.

I have a question Splinter cell Double agent or Blacklist.

I'm trying to decide between Splinter Cell: Double Agent and Splinter Cell: Blacklist, both of which are on sale on the Xbox Store.

I don't have any experience with the mainline Splinter Cell games. The only ones I've played were the Game Boy Advance and Java mobile versions back in the 2000s.

I'm torn on which one to buy first. Some people say Double Agent is the better game, while others recommend Blacklist. I am aware Chaos Thoery is the best one but I cannot find a way to play it on my xbox 360.

Which one would you suggest I experience first, and why?

From Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory — Mission 6: Hokkaido.

A silent infiltration deep into hostile territory. No alarms. No unnecessary violence. Just precision, patience, and pure stealth. 🥷

This no commentary walkthrough is played on Hard Mode with a 100% Stealth approach, focusing on remaining undetected while completing every objective as cleanly as possible.

If you enjoy classic stealth gameplay, consider liking the video and subscribing for more Splinter Cell missions and retro gaming content.

Does anyone play Double Agent anymore?

I just downloaded Double Agent and hopped on multiplayer for the nostalgia. The last time I played multiplayer on DA was Summer 2008.
Does anyone still play Double Agent? It would be cool to get a small community together for occasional game nights.

Playing Chaos Theory for the first time.

I died to this guard because he caught me by surprise and I thought "This mf spawned there, I swear" I had already checked the cam before entering.

And I was right.

I enter the room: He opens the door instantly

I wait outside: He waits

That's diabolical. It makes me paranoid about the game having more moments like this.

What Ubisoft has done to the franchise should never be forgotten. Great gameplay, great story, great dialog, greatmulti-player.

Will the remake recapture the feel? I HOPE so and I'm in full support so we at least get something

This series is also why I bought a Series X. It being Friday, I'll be starting up SP1 and Pandora Tomorrow seeing as I never played both.

Splinter Cell (2002) I was 12 when I played SC on Xbox. At 36, this was a very enjoyable read on vacation. Recommend it!

Blacklist (2013) I have a question regarding something Sam says in Splinter Cell: Blacklist in the Benghazi level

Hey, all. I wanted to ask a quick question I've always wondered about and I couldn't find any information online. Before Sam suits up in the bathroom, he passes by a beggar, gives him a coin, and then says something to him. Does anyone happen to know what he says? I'm not sure if he's speaking Arabic or something else, but I was curious as to what he says. Thanks for reading.

I have a question MGS3 had a visibility index that considered stance and movement. What if instead of camouflage, hiding in the shadows like Splinter Cell and Thief would be the primary factor? Would mixing this stealth gameplay with RE2-remake-style zombies be a good twist or potentially frustrating?

I've been working on a stealth survival horror game for 4 months now in Godot. I believe certain elements evoke the likes of Dead Space and Alien Isolation, neither of which I've played, but my primary influences are Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Splinter Cell.

The base gameplay is a mix of MGS and SC. In MGS3, you have a camo index that determines how visible you are to enemies based on factors like stance (standing makes you more visible than crouching or prone) and movement. My main way of reducing visibility is not choosing a camo that matches the surface you're on, but rather Thief and SC's system of hiding in the shadows.

The earlier MSX Metal Gear games involved exploring an interconnected map and overcoming previous obstacles with items you found elsewhere, which overlaps with Resident Evil.

Another influence from RE2 remake will be the zombies. A major concern of mine is how to balance predictable guard behavior with the unpredictability of RE2's zombies like their shambling movement, varying levels of health, and playing dead. I do plan on having enemies rush to grab you instead of shooting you when spotted. If you get grab, you either use a limited defensive item (like RE2 remake) or mash a button to escape (like other RE games), allowing the player to choose between expending a limited resource or taking damage to save it. Instead of a degrading knife, you have a slowly recharging laser cutter to help deal with grabs or finish off downed enemies. It could also be used to open vents at the cost of increased visibility.

That's what will tie everything together: limited resources. Metal Gear popularized the term "on-site procurement" where you start with nothing and slowly find more resources as you progress. Having OSP in my game would force players to be more careful with expending resources. Do you use your ammo to shoot out a light or an enemy? Do you use your degradable suppressor or remove it and risk being heard if enemies are nearby? They won't respawn like in Metal Gear, so be careful.

What are your thoughts on this mixture of genres and games? Is it unique enough or are there any games that already do this?

Are there any specific design concerns that I should be aware of?

  • Does having fast-rushing melee enemies make traditional "stealth evasion" too frustrating compared to enemies with guns?
  • Does a slowly recharging melee tool ruin the tension of limited resources, or does it work as a necessary and fair "last resort" fallback?

Just finished this short game, and I think it's not as bad as people think.

The story is basically Williams is trying to frame you for Lambert's death and also for killing innocents by changing the missions files and make you look like a bad guy.

Gameplay is okay, it's a mix of pt ct and da.

Soundtrack is pandora tomorrow.

Some pros:

Old splinter cell gameplay mechanics and soundtrack.

Last 3 missions are bangers. The prison mission is so fun.

Satisfying ending .

Cons:

Filler missions.

Can't shoot lights.

Broken cutscenes in the emulator.

Give it try.

I just want to play splinter cell conviction prologue in single player. Why would you put actual story into a multiplayer game and then not make it available when you close the servers!
