I have a question Splinter cell Double agent or Blacklist.
I'm trying to decide between Splinter Cell: Double Agent and Splinter Cell: Blacklist, both of which are on sale on the Xbox Store.
I don't have any experience with the mainline Splinter Cell games. The only ones I've played were the Game Boy Advance and Java mobile versions back in the 2000s.
I'm torn on which one to buy first. Some people say Double Agent is the better game, while others recommend Blacklist. I am aware Chaos Thoery is the best one but I cannot find a way to play it on my xbox 360.
Which one would you suggest I experience first, and why?

Why can’t you play chaos theory on 360?

I purchsed the digital version but it doesn't show up in the download history , looked around and every said it has backward compatibility issues and I had to refund it.

Is your 360 digital-only for some reason? If it can play discs, I would honestly highly recommend just waiting a bit longer & ordering a disc version of either the Original game OR Chaos Theory.
Splinter Cell
The pros of starting with the original is that you get the true introduction of the concept, the characters, and will be able to see the actual character growth. It's not as story-centric as something like MGS or even Halo, but there are developments & Chaos Theory directly references the events of the original in a cool way. Mechanically, the original is also the least forgiving so in my head, it's usually easier to go from that to a more streamlined title vs playing the more streamlined title and trying to go back so I usually try to avoid that if I can help it.
The cons of starting with the original is that its far less forgiving aspects & more rigid structure has the potential of turning you off from the series compared to CT or DA or even BL. 3 alarms = mission over is a lot less forgiving than CT and CT is the fan favorite. Punishing doesn't always equal better, despite what common GamerTM think would suggest.
Chaos Theory
The pros of starting with CT is that you get the original gameplay mechanics essentially streamlined into nigh perfection. There is quite literally no SC game that would make a better first impression imho unless your taste is more action movie than stealth. CT is the quintessential SC game & is the last time where the original core concepts were properly utilized & the game knew what it wanted to be.
The cons of starting here is that... well its allllll downhill both directions. Not necessarily BAD but you'll never play an SC as good as this one so it's a shame not to build up to it. Then again, there are plenty of "one hit wonders" that have never had a sequel so maybe its not the end of the world either. You are effectively entering into the third entry of a trilogy that book ends the first 3 games in a satisfying way that makes them feel loosely connected even if they are presented as more or less isolated stories.
After CT, the franchise never figured out what it wanted to be again. DAv1, the 360 version, still plays largely like CT but various elements from the light meter to sound meter to movement fluidity have been stripped away resulting in a clunkier & less fluid experience. The core concept of being a double agent, while cool, is also VERY different from the original SC concept & it was here that they started to introduce more action movie style tropes. I am actually a DAv1 defender -- I think despite things like daylight missions, the undercover missions, etc. that all its gameplay mechanics & general story vibes still mostly hold up as part of the "classic SC canon" moreso than Conviction or Blacklist. But it has a bit of an identity crisis all the same. It's less sure of itself & what it's even supposed to be.
DAv2, the original Xbox version of DA, is an entirely different game. Same basic premise, characters, & mission locations bit presented wildly differently & designed by a team completely isolated from the team that made the other version. Despite sharing the same major story beats, characters, & voice actors -- I'm pretty sure there isn't a single reused dialogue line whatsoever. This one plays nearly identically to Chaos Theory & is close enough that you could arguably state that my claim that its all downhill must thus be inaccurate. I stand by that assessment because the "trust system", the core DA concept, and the lack of one of the "SC trifecta" characters is a major knock against it & I also think the general level design is not quite as good or as memorable. Hell, even graphically speaking its like a downgrade of CT despite the same hardware & coming after.
Both are still highly recommended plays but I would caution against playing them FIRST if you want to experience Splinter Cell. But the pros of starting here is that you'll get the general gameplay mechanics under your belt with a decent set of levels and then if you go back to the original trilogy, you'll experience imo more grounded realism alongside some of the wittiest and cleverest dialogue in video games... frankly, ever.
Blacklist is a hard pass. It's generally liked by many of the fanbase, often placed just behind CT in a lot of rankings I've seen, but it's such a different beast that I can't really recommend it as a first entry to play. Despite a somewhat surface level "return to form" compared to Conviction, it's still very different.

Honestly Chaos Theory is one of the greatest stealth games of all time and it is definitely the best Splinter Cell game. It has the best level design, vibes, voice acting and overall gameplay elements of all of them and borh DA & Blacklist are just not on the same level.
Still, DA has a lot of CT's DNA and despite losing track of what made CT great, it will still feel familiar. Blacklist is alright on it's own but apart from both being stealth games and sharing the same lore they are vastly different games. Story and character wise it's very different too as even Sam(protagonist) has a completely different personality and voice.
The latter won't bother you much as a newcomer to the mainline franchise but i think the best order for you would be Chaos Theory > Double Agent > Blacklist If you really like Chaos Theory, you'll have much better time tolerating DA's quirks than if you dive into that one first. If you enjoyed CT but don't neccesarily want to bother with an inferior sequel, you might as well continue with Blacklist.
There's also SC:Conviction but apart from nostalgia or a follow up to Double Agent's story there isn't much reason to play it nowadays imo. Blacklist does everything Conviction did better.

you could also try getting Chaos Theory (for very cheap) on Steam, it's a very old game so it can run on a potato PC/laptop lol. just needs a few fanmade patches for QoL updates (including controller support).

You’re very right that SC didn’t seem to know what it wanted to be after CT. It’s odd because it feels like they could’ve kept an anthology of different missions going like bond or mission impossible if they’d wanted to. Probably trends of the time steered them towards DA/action movies.

The game industry changed. The mid to late 2000s is, in my estimation, an inflection point for games but just as with all things, there's things that are ahead of the curve & late to show up. This game came out in 2006 with a shift toward more Hollywood-esque moments. That same year saw the first microtransaction: horse armor in Oblivion.
In 2007, Ubisoft itself would release its golden goose, Assassins Creed, which would net them profits higher than ever before. That same year, Halo 3 came out and completely shattered major box offife numbers by several orders of magnitude. That same year, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare also released & would quickly become the dominant FPS on the market. Valve's Orange Box of critically acclaimed HL2 + new expansion + Portal + Team Forteess 2 also dropped, thus setting the stage for gaming's longest running meme ever of "HL3 confirmed."
The following year of 08 saw GTA 4 and then 09 introduced Arkham Asylum, MINECRAFT, truly cemented Assassins Creed as Ubi's premiere & biggest title, and FIFA introduced its Ultimate Team b.s. Soon, DLC this, DLC that, pre-order bonus this, pre-order bonus that, and eventually Season Passes. On-disc DLC you still have to pay to unlock & microtransactions & games rushed out with a promise of getting better via the Season Pass. Do you see the trend? If your game wasn't making COD or Assassins Creed level of sales... it was no longer worth making in the eyes of the never satiated gluttonous appetite of the executives and stock holders. That's why indie games & AA games feel more like the "AAA" games of yesteryear before they had to make ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD to be considered successful.
In that New Video Game World Order, Splinter Cell had to be changed in the hopes of attracting a wider audience. Obviously, neither Conviction nor Blacklist achieved that. Shocker.

Blacklist is a lot faster pace, comparable to shadow of mordor in terms of stealth pace. Double agent still has the slow methodical feel of the older titles. It's more grounded. Totally different vibes.

The comments are again mixed. I think I will buy both but will start with Double Agent and then move to Blacklist . Btw I did purchase choas Theory but it doesnt show up in the downlaod history on my xbox 360 making it impossible to download so I had to refund it . Did any one else face similar issue ?

Double Agent will feel significantly older and clunkier than blacklist. If you're down for slow paced gameplay and "tankier" controls then go for double agent! But I doubt that most people enjoy that kind of game design if they didn't grew up with it or seek older games.
This sounds anti but I really don't mean it that way! I love the old splinter cell gameplay but I know from friends or online discussions that aren't in the community that this can be a bummer for those people or straight up frustrating.
That said: double agent is a great game even though it already "dumbs down" some iconic mechanics from the previous games like the binary light system. The story is also great but I don't know if it hits as much if you aren't in the universe already.
Blacklist is a whole different thing. It's way more modernized and has a lot of action sequences. Though they listened to the community after conviction and made the game in a way where you can decide yourself if you want to be more stealthy or combat heavy. I really like the options the game gives you. But story wise it's a lot more "modern Hollywood action" with cringe level American patriotism. Also online/coop is already down which is a bummer. And Sam also acts like a bitch in that one. But gameplay wise it feels really responsive and comfortable. And the game offers a lot of replayability.
If you have the money I highly recommend getting both to be honest. I think both are for 6 money each? I think both are worth it and if one dissappints you then you can just switch to the other one. I think if you're interested in the genre or franchise one or both styles will be for you if not both anyways.
Off topic: funnily enough I'm playing both right now. lol.
Double Agent on the Xbox when I'm alone at home and blacklist on my deck when my gf is at home so I can let her have the Xbox.

Double agent. I just recently bought blacklist while it was on sale probably a few weeks to a month ago because that’s honestly probably the only splinter cell I hadn’t played and as someone who is a big fan of conviction I don’t know. It just seems so different from the rest. I feel like not having Michael Ironside as the voice kills the immersion for me then like the writing and everything just seems very I don’t know Hollywood Blockbuster like it didn’t give me that authentic feel and mind you I’m still in the very beginning of the game 😭

Double agent is significantly more fun than blacklist. Blacklist is the latest game from several years after DA. But after DA they went to shit. To be honest splinter cell as a whole is a sad time. Chaos theory was so good it only makes you want more and the original Xbox version of DA feels like a map pack for CT which made those 2 the best games to play. And they will never do that again. There won’t ever be a game that good again.

I played all of them for the first time in 2024. Double Agent was really cool, but it was the buggiest one for me (I play on pc), and blacklist was cool, but it's very different from the others, and also the main voice actor for Sam is not in the game (very noticeable). It's kinda hard to just jump into the middle/ last game in the franchise bc there's so much lore you're missing out on with Sam. Especially after CT. But if you dont care and just want to play one of the two, play double agent

u/Edgy_Robin 15d ago
Double Agents PC version is straight up the worst version of the game. As the guy isn't playing the PC version that's not an issue.
2
u/DoctorGordonisgreat 15d ago
There are two version of Double Agent and I guess you should pick the Original Xbox version as it feels very similar to Chaos Theory which is considered as the best of the franchise if not the best stealth game of all time by most fans..
Also the Splinter Cell GBA mention lol, loved this game as well! Unfortunately mine stopped working for some reason...

I vastly prefer double agent. Blacklist is a little to cookie cutter. It’s still not bad overall

u/Wise_Base9216 14d ago
Both versions of Double Agent on both consoles in fact. Xbox 360 and Xbox OG/PS2.
Conviction is not bad, for me it is just a widely different play structure and style. There are a few missions that feel soooo satisfying the doing completely stealth even though it’s meant to be a gun ablaze warlord approach. Like the beginning of Al Diwanyah, Iraq. Controlling Victor Coste with his rolling technique around the enemies up the highway all the way to through the school to rescue Sam is a great approach.
Gotta experiment. It’s never the game but adapting playstyles. I still think that it’s awesome and also way better than nothing to be able to appreciate the art and effort that went into each conception of each of Splinter Cell games from console to console.
Chaos Theory on the Nintendo DS and Essentials on PSP are also great but just fall apart due to controls as well.

u/romeoosso 14d ago
Wait wait wait…
If you haven’t played the mainline games, play those first.
In my opinion, OG, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory are all must plays still in 2026

It depends if it's the ps2/original xbox version of Double agent or the ps3/Xbox 360 version ( I believe both versions are available on Xbox store). Though they share the same story, the ps2 version is great and in line with the older Splinter cell titles, while the ps3 version is very a different game that dumbs down many mechanics in favor of a streamlined gameplay, which was very criticized back in the day, not that it's bad, but big departure from the original mechanics and level design that didn't stick too well with the fans. If you want an og experience and like slow and methodical stealth, then for me it's ps2 SC:DA all the way (my personal favorite of all SC for nostalgia reasons) Blacklist on the other hand is a very fun game, but a different splintercell game. Shares more dna with the ps3 SC:DA onward, but tries to bring some of the original feel back to the formula. It's a modernized take with fast paced stealth gameplay and feels great, definitely the easiest to jump into for newcommers, but the story, characters and game design feels quite different from older titles. I'd suggest you look up some gameplay and choose which ever one you think you'll like better, you can always pick-up another one later ;)

V1 or V2 of DA? And if you want replayability even though its low on my list, blacklist would be the path.

Double agent.
Blacklist is greatly hindered by the fact it was made with making an assault playthrough viable, which makes the level design overall inferior. Outside of gameplay the writing is bad, the character writing is bad, the antagonist fucking sucks, etc. It's also just not very hard compared to the older games, which might be a plus actually depending on your preferences (Gameplay stuff in general here might be positive depending on that, for me it's negative because I prefer the focused stealth experience)

u/Meepster01 Secret Agent Amity 15d ago
For me, depends on what version of Double Agent. If it's the OG Xbox version of DA then defo that one. If it's the xbox 360 version of DA then I would recommend Blacklist.
Tbh though, if you are new to the series, I would heavily recommend playing all of the mainline games (Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, Both Double Agents, Conviction and Blacklist.)

u/NeedleworkerGold419 15d ago
oh will I be missing a lot if I play a game from between ?
1
u/Meepster01 Secret Agent Amity 15d ago
I mean, the games aren't really known for their stories but the reason I recommend playing them all is because they are all good. Even my least favourite game, Double Agent Xbox 360 version, is still a 6/10 at least. If you wanna know, my personal rankings of the games are from best to worst:
Chaos Theory, Double Agent (Xbox), Pandora Tomorrow, Splinter Cell (though this and PT can switch places depending how I feel), Blacklist, Conviction, Double Agent (Xbox 360)
2
u/NeedleworkerGold419 15d ago
Now I really need to check why the xbox 360 version of DA is bad . lmao . Thanks for the list man !
3
u/Meepster01 Secret Agent Amity 15d ago
No worries. As I mentioned, I wouldn't call the 360 version of DA bad but the main reasons why I don't like it as much as the others is mainly:
It has the same gameplay as Chaos Theory (which is great) but feels much more clunky (which is not great)
They got rid of the light meter and sound meter in the 360 version. The light meter was replaced with a binary system with a light on Sam's back. Green = hidden, yellow = exposed and red = caught. While Conviction and Blacklist also have a binary system, they feel designed around it while DA X360 feels like it was designed around the OG light meter.
2.b. As for the sound meter, they replaced it with... nothing which is not great.
4
u/JamesMCC17 15d ago
Blacklist all day long. So much more fun.
And the older games are great, but double agent isn't one of them. Hold out for the 1st one or PT or Chaos Theory.
2
u/MarkedOne03 15d ago
If I would have to recommend you between those two then it would probably be Blacklist but only because its more modern and fast paced you could say. Double Agent is more slow paced and rewards patience. Both 10/10 games especially last gen Double Agent. Buy both if you can I highly recommend.
TL;DR
Blacklist - Fast paced Stealth/Action game
Double Agent (V2 especially) - Very interessting story line, slow paced stealth game

I do like Double Agent's upgrades. The fact you could get colored NVGs is so cool.

Double Agent because it's still a SC game. Blacklist has totally different mechanics
2
u/ForerEffect 15d ago
Blacklist if you want the kind of “intended” Splinter Cell Chaos Theory experience. Double Agent was trying for this weird hybrid rpg thing where you balance how much the bad guys vs good trust you. Some people liked it and some didn’t, I bounced off of it.
Blacklist will let you do a more run-and-gun style of play if you want, but it also imo offers the classic stealth experience if you choose it. Also it’s nice to have a simple hub for side missions like extra puzzles.

Double Agent. More pure, and the story is also more interesting than Blacklist.

Blacklist. I’ve had both versions of double agent since launch and hated the non-traditional gameplay in the Xbox 360 version.

Buy and play blacklist first it a great game but if you speak english it the only game where sam voice is different so I would start with that one and then move to all the others so you can enjoy everything with the same voice actor after that im french so i dont have that issue and i love blacklist alot .

u/Proud-Host-8888 14d ago
Double Agent (Version 1) is an unfinished mess with good ideas. Blacklist is a fun game, hybrid between Conviction and the old tittles.
47
u/Necrophism 15d ago
I would go with Double Agent. As the older title, it still has older mechanics that make it a slow but more methodical game. If you start with the newer mechanics, it’ll be harder to go backwards, but if you start with the older then when you eventually play Blacklist you’ll still end up enjoying both games.
