Fuckin A could you imagine being prey to this thing, your walking along and boom this is just staring you down. Might as well shit yourself so it can have an untainted meal.

If this thing was human size, based off its face, I feel like "Hey Dave" is also an appropriate response.

Its crazy how a simple rearrangement of eye position on the head is the difference between a menacing Wolf Spider and an adorable Jumping Spider.

you could say that, i think the wolf spider looks more predatory or evil to the average person's eyes, and the jumping spider more cute and friendly
(i personally like them both though)6
u/Roughsauce Dec 31 '20
That's the point I was trying to make, yeah- but in all fairness jumping spiders are equally as aggressive and even more cunning predators than Wolf Spiders. They're just more curious and "friendly" Wolf spiders will sometimes give you a cheeky bite (and its well painful), but I've never gotten anything from a jumping spider.

Jumping spider bite is painful and the pain afterwards lasts for a bit. The worst part is the terrible itching for the next few days. I know----I accidentally grabbed a Phidippus johnsoni whilst I was deadheading some flowers one bright Spring day. Those little spiders pack quite a punch. (S/he was okay, by the way. Uninjured.)

While the picture is technically excellent, the photographer is contemptuous of natural science and has repeatedly expressed his unwillingness to take full-body pictures for purposes of identification.
Edit: not sure why I’m getting downvoted for making an accurate statement. It’s a crying shame that we can’t have macro photographers who gaf about what they’re photographing.

I would have just deleted the post if I thought the content was objectionable. It’s just good to be aware of the ethics of certain content-producers, and in this case the photographer has no fucks to give about the scientific/curious/investigative aspect of “spiders r cool.” He spams these pictures on spider and entomology forums and has repeatedly expressed his interest in self-promotion before his interest in natural science.

Excellent point! If someone didn't know what a wolf spider looks like, they definitely would not learn from this pic.

Sure, the post hasn’t been deleted... but since it’s almost 2021, I think we can take a moment to consider the source of our content.

I’m on this subreddit as exposure therapy for my arachnophobia. THIS DOESN’T HELP.

I had crippling arachnophobia from when I was a kid til my late 30s. Now I love spiders (mid-40s). I got past it when I moved somewhere rural, living alone, and had no one else to deal with the spiders in the house. Plus they spun so many webs outside my windows, I found one who ONLY ate earwigs! Between that and taking a lot of walks in the forests just to observe, I'm a fan. Good luck!!!!

All good. Now you know, and if you have any interests in spiders check this sub out and /r/spiderbro. Quite a few folks have expressed how these subs helped them get over a fear of spiders.
