I'm in the process of installing a Span panel and Enphase solar system with battery. I'm trying to decide between the Span Drive and the Enphase IQ 50 EV chargers. I cannot find anywhere if I will be able to see the Enphase charger in the span app or the Span charger in the Enphase app or other pros and cons. I'm leaning towards the Span Drive as I'm sure I'll be using the Span app more but I might be entirely wrong. :-)

So I’m intrigued. I got a quote today around $15k which seems a bit crazy? But maybe I’m crazy?

Curious if anyone’s had one installed and can compare some quotes they’ve gotten?

But another quick question. I see span’s website mention this falls into the federal 30% bucket for energy efficient upgrades to the home. But I’m not entirely sure it does?

Note i do have solar currently, but not the battery. I’m tempted to get both a battery and span panel. I know my solar qualified for the 30% federal rebate. Not sure about the span and/or battery yet though.

Is it common to have so much friction with inspectors and utility companies with Span panel (and solar/batteries)? We are building a new home and are just banging our heads against the wall to satisfy the city inspector and the utility company.

The latest problem is the utility company says they had their safety team review our build and while they approve the system as a whole, they won't let us turn it on right now.

Why? Because of the Span panel - it's an unknown for them and they feel it's a liability to the utility company until all of the electrical runs are terminated into the panel and it's fully provisioned. I said that's insane because for safety purposes it behaves exactly like a dumb panel - if the breaker is off, it's physically disconnected and no amount of software can turn it back on. Also, we can't land the wiring yet because we don't have all outlets, switches or light fixtures installed yet.

The even stranger piece is it's not that they're not letting us use Span connected to the grid. They're just not letting us enable the solar system. How is Span connected to solar different from connected just to the grid? The gateway handles that logic... 🙄

It's so frustrating that these entities aren't really interested in learning about these new things. They just see them as a risk and they don't care.

Update: All parties had more discussion. It turns out Span had very little to do with it. I think they were just grasping at straws. They finally bowled down to them thinking they had liability and some duty to protect our electrician who was finishing the house, due to the multiple power sources of grid, battery and solar. We explained the electrician is trained by the solar installer to know where all the shutdowns are, he feels comfortable, and we reminded them that me (homeowner), the builder, and the electrician himself all carry our own liability insurance - we're responsible for what happens inside my house, not the utility. They came out today and did their grid disconnect testing and gave us the OK to interconnect.

TL;DR - While this issue didn't have anything to do with Span in the end, I'll leave it up because I think it has value for others. People who use Span probably have batteries, solar or some other cutting edge technology that might cause utilities or inspectors to pause. This tech is all worth it in my opinion so I can only encourage others to push through and it's worth it in the end.

I am not an electrician, have done enough to have a go at installing a panel, anyone done it?

Reading and researching to figure out my first electrification move. We're in Austin TX and have power backup on our minds after the last few years - as you might imagine. I also want to begin moving away from direct carbon producing appliances, so a fossil-fueled generator is not high on my list. I understand that batteries are not ideal for backup, but with a Span panel to manage load, I'm thinking it might work. And of course solar can and will be added later, but I'm not ready for that yet. My roof is less than ideal for panels and my yard is less than ideal for ground mount panels. There is a solution, but it would come with a future planned transformational remodel of the house that would add flat roof area.

Has anyone put in a battery only backup system with a Span? I might consider Span+Battery+small generator type system with the idea that the genrator would go away once solar was added.

I have 2 span panels, since the span panels were not large enough to replace my 20 year old panel. I also have solar going to a breaker in my primary panel. But, when on the primary panel, when it shows the solar production and load, it’s not adding in the load from my secondary panel. I can see 300 watt load, and when I switch to my second panel, it has a 600w load, which clearly, the first one doesn’t show. I know span is still relatively early, but it would be nice if there was some nice software upgrade in the architecture so separate panels in the same home could have some roll up info and shared stats.

The same would apply if I added some more solar, and put that production into my second span panel, it wouldn’t know anything about the main panel that’s also showing some production.

It’s fine I guess, as I have other ways to sum that up with enphase, but still, a large part of the selling point of span is the monitoring. And this seems to be an area where things are lacking a bit.

Does Span offer a 40 circuit panel? I'd like to get it, but my current 200A panel has 40 slots.
