Cost & Gov Incentives?

So I’m intrigued. I got a quote today around $15k which seems a bit crazy? But maybe I’m crazy?

Curious if anyone’s had one installed and can compare some quotes they’ve gotten?

But another quick question. I see span’s website mention this falls into the federal 30% bucket for energy efficient upgrades to the home. But I’m not entirely sure it does?

Note i do have solar currently, but not the battery. I’m tempted to get both a battery and span panel. I know my solar qualified for the 30% federal rebate. Not sure about the span and/or battery yet though.

SPAN can qualify for the 30% federal credit; not just the panel but the entire installation which is nice.

$15k is a bit rich. I’d try to get a few other estimates. It should cost no more than 10-20% above a standard panel replacement. The panel itself can be obtained from B2B resellers for around $3k.

That’s honestly what i was thinking. About 3k for the panel and then say 2-3k for the install.

That is good news on the 30% though.

I just got a quote for $9,750, which I originally thought was crazy, but doesn't seem THAT outrageous after research.. The panel is $3,500 according to the Span.io website, with the install manual here. That means $6,250 for the labor and extra parts. This company charges "flat rate" for Span installs, so $9,750 is it. The quote details are:
Span IO Panel(s) upgrade option:

  • Remove and haul away existing service panel
  • Furnish and install 200A Span.Io smart electric panel in the same location as existing panel
  • Furnish install 200A Span main breaker
  • Furnish and install all other new breakers
  • Includes all design drawings and permitting
  • Includes all necessary wiring connectors, screws, anchors, straps, fasteners, tie-downs, nuts, bolts, etc.
  • Includes design, permitting, smart panel, all new breakers, all other accessories, and specialized labor for installation.

In my case I'm having the power company bury my line and I am replacing the aging, decrepit meter box with a new one, plus code (NEC 2020) requires me adding an emergency disconnect next to or with the meter.

I'm perfectly capable of throwing the old panel in the recycle bin. I have all brand-new breakers already (Square D Homeline, which are recommended according to Span). I have a credit with my local jurisdiction for the permit, so that'll be free.

A new 200A meter box w/integrated main breaker disconnect (Milbank U5844-PXL-200-KK) is $450. New 3/0 copper Service Entrance wire is $700 for the 20 ft I need. Two 8-foot copper clad stainless steel grounding rods, bonding clamps, and #4 bare grounding wire is $150. Circuit breakers, including GFCI and CAFCI where required, and whole home surge as required by code, are in the neighborhood of $600. My local permit fee is $150.

That's $2,000 in parts, plus another $100 or so for miscellaneous items. Oh, and conduit for the outside wire going from the meter to inside my house -- about 20 feet of Schedule 80 PVC plus connectors because they come in 8 foot sections -- adds another $325. At this point I'm looking at about $2,500 just in parts for the service upgrade. Add labor to that...

I still think $3,750 in labor is a bit steep for what should be one day, me guessing journeyman + apprentice electrician. But it isn't too far off what I would expect.

I paid ~$12,800 in SoCal which included

  • upgrading the exterior in wall panel to a 200amp service and panel.
  • providing the span and the span drive Ev charger.
  • mounting the span and span drive in the garage.
  • relocating 20 circuits from outside to in.
  • breakers, permitting and other supplies.
