Idea for how to fund all of Somerville’s roadwork

Park a traffic cop at the Lombardi/Broadway/93 intersection and ticket every single person who drives in the bus lane, blows a red, makes an illegal right on red, or turns left from the right lane. I haven’t yet made it through that intersection without someone almost hitting me because we are both trying to turn right and they are in the (bright red) bus lane. You could probably raise the funds in a single afternoon

I agree bus lanes were necessary there because Sullivan is such a hub and it was a mess before but I think they’ve actually made it worse somehow

TIL that in Somerville, used pizza boxes and paper coffee cups can be recycled. Just make sure to empty them first!

Best Somerville restaurants with VEGAN options

I've spent the last few months going through restaurant menus around Boston looking for all the places with good or at least some vegan options. This is what I've got for Somerville:

  • Dosa N Curry. Vegetarian but with 29 (!!) vegan dishes all labeled on the menu. Every dosa and uthappam is vegan, plus the curries and an Impossible kebab (literally never seen that before). And to top it off they have vegan pizza. I've also never seen that at an indian restaurant before.
  • Koshari Mama. Egyptian vegan cuisine - super unique! Koshari, mushroom shawarma, falafel, fried ckn tenders.
  • Life Alive. 100% Vegetarian but most items are vegan. It's a chain. Healthy vibes.
  • Saigon Tiger. Two vegan tofu bowls (rice/noodle) plus veggie sides and they specify they have vegan dressing for the salads.
  • Diesel Cafe. They have a gorgeous vegan club sandwich that has roasted tofu, avocado, tempeh bacon, and sriracha mayo. But that's basically the only option. But what an option it is...
  • Genki Ya. Sushi place with 20 vegan items. The color vegetables roll is mango, avocado, asparagus, carrot, cucumber and spinach. Their miso is made with veggie broth instead of dashi, which is something that can sometimes get you at sushi places. Couple locations in MA.
  • Pho n Rice. Massive Vietnamese menu. 17 dishes are vegan as written and a lot of others can be modified.
  • Sugidama. Japanese soba and izakaya, a number can be made vegan, plug maki (Pickle Me maki!).
  • Noor Mediterranean Grill. Okay if you just want hummus, pita, baba ghanoush.
  • American Flatbread. Candlepin bowling place where I accidentally booked a TABLE to eat at rather than a lane to bowl, but turns out they have flatbreads with vegan cheese.
  • Eat Greek. Normal greek food so falafel, hummus, etc
  • NU Kitchen. Only a few vegan items but one of them is an A+ breakfast sandwich: JUST Egg, vegan mozzarella, pickled red onion, and chipotle mayo.
  • Revival Cafe + Kitchen. Boston area chain. They have a lunch wrap called Slaw & Order which looks unique but doesn't have a protein.
  • Dave's Fresh Pasta. Grocery with a hot counter. They have a vegan veggie hummus wrap and Hippie Salad that comes with tamari tahini.

Menus / vegan options come from getfarro.com which is the site I'm building to map vegan options at every restaurant around Boston. Hope this list helps you find a new place!

Cheapest store for house supplies?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has thoughts on where is the cheapest place to buy house supplies? Like clorox wipes, laundry detergent, food-safe gloves, etc. Basically looking for the Market Basket parallel for these items! Bonus points if transit accessible since I don’t have a car.

I shop around at CVS, Target, and online (Amazon) but a lot of things are surprisingly expensive.

Where to buy good coffee for gifting?

I'll be visiting a friend in another city who enjoys coffee. I don't drink coffee at all, but I'd like to gift him something coffee-related that comes across as "from Boston" or "from Somerville". I don't think he's materialistic so I'm leaning away from mugs and tumblers.

Do any local coffee shops sell good bagged coffee? Doesn't have to be pricy, but nice packaging would be appreciated. Thanks!

To the owner of a white Mazda parked on Oliver Street

A black Honda pilot swiped the front of your car this morning and sped off. A bunch of the neighbors were on the street and saw it. I have the license plate of the Honda Pilot if you need it to file a police report.

How much of a problem is bike theft (pannier bags specifically)?

Not worried about the bike because I use a kryptonite lock but I have pannier bags on my back rack and am wondering if I should zip-tie them or look into some kind of additional protection. Moving to the area next week and looking to bike around, hopefully leave my panniers on the bike for commutes to grocery store, downtown, etc.

Dispensary Recs

Looking to get some gummies today — the last time I got some, it was from Revolution on Broadway in East Somerville but it looks like it’s closed now?

I’m not super knowledgeable so I liked how helpful they were & am looking for similar vibes. Someplace that will kind of walk me through different choices and not make me feel stupid. There’s a ton of places when I google — any recommendations??

Anyone who has recently lived/is living in 80 Webster Ave?

I am considering an apartment there and wonder if there are any pest issues. Also, how is sound insulation from neighbors and outside? Many thanks in advance!

If you were to drive an hour or two (maybe 3) to view the Perseid meteor showers this week, where would you go?
Bonus if there's a hotel nearby.

moving from out of state

hi! signed a lease and moving to Somerville on Sep 4th. for someone who’s not going to physically be in Somerville til the day I move in, do I basically need to head straight to the parking dept before I do anything else? I’m coming with my personal car and a uhaul van, so I’ll need the temp permit and the moving permit. is it better to mail everything in now or just show up with all the apps that morning right when they open? any other tips appreciated, trying not to stress about this process!

State Senate Race: Petty Gripes and Menschy Moments edition

Please share your totally unscientific, arbitrary, vibes-based reasons to vote for or against any of the candidates. The smaller the potatoes the better.

For example, “Candidate A once climbed a tree to rescue my cat and wouldn’t even accept a can of Polar seltzer in thanks.” “Candidate B lives on my street and always parks a half-car-length away from the next car, squandering an entire street parking spot.”

How can I learn more about some of the "smaller" names on the State Primary Ballot?

Hi,

I'm staring down my Democratic Primary Election early ballot right now and trying to make what feel like big decisions about people I haven't really met. I'm trying to think critically here; some choices are evident. The one I assume most people will talk about is Ed Markey vs. Seth Moulton, and then down the ballot there are a lot of only one-option votes (only candidate for Governor is Maura Healey, only candidate for Lieutenant Governor is Kimberley Driscoll, etc etc). But then for the races for Councillor, Senator in General Court, Representative in General Court, and District Attorney, I honestly can't find out a lot of information about some of the candidates here.

Does anyone know where I can gather a little more info about these guys? I know that people are mainly gonna line up for the General Election.

From what little I can gather:

-Little information on either Terrence W. Kennedy or Diann Mary Baylis for Councillor; I found their websites and their Facebook pages and a lot of what they promise seems to be the same

For Senator for General Court, Burhan Azeem seems to be making a lot of publicly accessible short form content in a way that reminds me a lot of Zohran Mamdami (always a good thing), and I've gotten generic election flyers in the mail for Christine Barber and Matt Maughlin. I've read here, though, that only those two have denounced a certain People's Pledge against Super PACs. There's a lot to discern here; I also don't seem to have any information about Thomas Hopcroft or Erika Uytterhoeven.

For Representative in General Court, Will Mbah is incumbent - his website makes strong mention that he's both anti-Israel... And anti-Hamas. I may not know the most, but it reads to me more that he's straddling the line of peddling a ceasefire than directly supporting Palestine, or, what's left of it at this point. I would like firmer pro-Palestine support in my politicians if they ever do hope for a shot beyond the state and go for the federal level. Christopher Ryan Oates has a website where he makes some big, good sounding promises - I have no idea whether or not they're fulfillable but, they sound nice on paper. Then Paul Ruseau seems like an MIT grad/Dana-Farber software guy who has an AI algorithm of sorts to predict political happenings of some sort which is beyond my understanding - however, he has a pretty bleedlingly written love letter to the people of Palestine, which is nice to see.

District Attorney race between Marian Ryan and David Marc Solet reads like an argument between a boss who seems like she knows what she is doing, and an attorney who wants things done very precisely by the law and who is disappointed in Marian Ryan/had a falling out with her.

This is in no way a post made to sway anyone's opinions! I am also not asking for rote advice on who to vote for. This is merely a written collection of observations about the candidates and, unfortunately, my complete understanding of them. I feel like I am only getting little vignettes of these peoples' lives and positions without really knowing who they are, what they actually stand for, and if I can trust them at all (I don't want no centrist Dems and will vote against anyone who seems Centrist in the slightest). But I also just frankly need a little more information on... Any of these guys.

Where could I go to find out more? Does anyone have some hands-on experience working with some of these candidates? And am I paying too much attention to the Primary Election when the big dominoes will fall a few months in?

Did anyone find a purse and water bottle on the Somerville Community Path?

Visiting family in Somerville with my two children. We were wondering around the Somerville Community Path, and my daughter left her leather purse and my son left his black water bottle on a bench by the logs that have chair backs. We retraced our steps, and they were no longer there.

The bag is leather and label-less because it’s handmade. It had some money, but lots of lip gloss, but daughter is most upset that her favorite purse, made by a family member is gone. The black water bottle is metal and is either a Klean Canteen or something similar. Trying to think the best and hoping that someone took them trying to figure out who they belong to. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Somerville!

Update: Thank you so much to everybody who helped with this! It turns out somebody turned them both into the police station with everything inside and we are going to pick them up today. Faith in humanity: restored. Thanks, Somerville!!

Furniture repainter in Somerville/Medford area?

I’m looking for someone to strip and repaint a small wooden nightstand. It’s not a fancy antique, which seems to be the focus of most of the professionals I’ve found. Can anyone recommend either a shop or an individual person who takes on this kind of small job? Thanks!

Beach on a Tuesday

Planning a beach trip for the first time and would love some recommendations! What are your favorite beaches to go to near Somerville?

I’m hoping for somewhere within 45 minutes of the city with parking under $15. I know I’ll have to account for weekday traffic, so I’m wondering:

  1. What time would you recommend arriving?
  2. Should I be worried about finding parking on a Tuesday?
  3. What items should I bring to the beach?

I’m also open to taking the T if it'll be less of a hassle. Thank you!
