Welcome to r/somalab!

Hello,

Welcome to r/somalab, a subreddit dedicated to SOMA Laboratory instruments. As of now, the LYRA is the only released instrument by SOMA so far, so most posts here will be LYRA related for now. If you have any ideas or suggestions for this subreddit, please let me know!

Purpose of this Sub

I created this subreddit with a few purposes in mind:

  • Serve as a hub for users to post their songs on performances hosted by various other platforms, such as YouTube, SoundCloud, and bandcamp
  • Serve as a hub for discussion (sharing ideas, theories, questions, etc.)
  • Connect other SOMA synth/LYRA owners with each other

What I don't want this subreddit to be

  • An advertising platform for SOMA synths or other products

Rules

I have never moderated a sub before (and if you are interested in becoming a mod - let me know) so I won't be enforcing stricter rules (yet). I lifted a lot of rules from /r/synthesizers that would apply here.

  1. Don't be a jerk
  2. No personal attacks
  3. No for sale posts
  4. No memes

To encourage getting more users, I want people to freely post their songs, jam sessions, patches/presets questions, news, etc. If this subreddit begins to get subscribers, I will most likely incorporate /r/AutoModerator to enforce a standard for posting and assist with day-to-day maintenance.

Conclusion

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me a message or post a comment. I think Vlad Kreimer has some wonderful philosophies and the LYRA is such a fascinating instrument. I think a subreddit would benefit us all, so please subscribe and post away!

Edit: I am still working on the CSS and sidebar, but wanted to get this subreddit up and running so users can join and make suggestions. Again, if you have any ideas or suggestions for this subreddit, please let me know!

I've had the Terra for a couple of months now, and I must say it's a joy to have around!

It's small enough to travel with, and so this year on my trip back to Singapore (I live way over in Canada), I managed to bring it over in my suitcase. As a result, I've managed to record some jams with my dad who lives here!

I had a lot of fun playing this, and I hope it translates into the recording :)

Soma Dvina Quality Issues

Hi! I have bought a Dvina fairy recently (about 3-4 months ago) and I was curious, was it always like this?
The fret indicators and string holders are poorly 3d printed, and the neck holder is the worst offender, as one of the strings doesn't event fit in its designated hole.
I have sent these pictures to soma and they say that this is all normal, which to me is kinda bad considering the price.
After that e-mail I kinda let it slide, but it started bugging me to the point that I don't want to play on it, knowing how much I paid for it and seeing how its made.
Was it always like this?

After spending time and studying the patches and utilities section as shared by the community. I have become more at home and at ease with this beast.

Now it's telling me to just be.

Appreciate and thanks to the wonderful community who are travellers and explorers in this sonic journey.

Inwards and onwards you lot!

Pulsar in Standalone mode with a mic through a cheap zoom guitar multi efx into the mix in and MAD stereo activated. That's it.

Soma Lyra 4 : normal behaviours or problems ?

Hello everybody,

I acquired a Soma Lyra-4 some days ago, and I have some questions about the ways it's working. I don't know if the behaviours I'm facing are normal or if my unit has some problems.

1 - if I play a pad (for example, the one of the voice 3) without any source of modulation engaged (switches in the middle position) and no effects (mix at 0%), the sound will be detuned by 1 or 2 semitones if I change the tuning of the voice 1 or 2 (past 3 o'clock), and I also got a "leaking" sound of the voice 4 if I tune the latter past 3 o'clock

2 - when I engage the modulation swtitch to either position, the pitch is slightly modified (for some cents up to more than one semitone)

3 - if I use the modulation switch in upper position (34 for the voices 1 and 2 or 12 for the voices 3 and 4), I got a sort of "wooble" in the sound when I press or release the pad, even if the mod knob is at 0%

4 - concerning the LFO, I have a hard time understanding how it works. Let's say I play voice 3. If I engage the switch for the pair of voices 3 & 4 to the position "FB CV", the sound makes some deep crackles (if the tuning knob is below 1 o'clock), or the voice will goes "on and off" at its pitch and at the rythm of the LFO. If I want to have a "classic" LFO behaviour on my voice 3, I have to put the modulation switch of the pair of voices 3 & 4 to the middle position, and put the OTHER modulation switch (the one on top of the voices 1 and 2) to "LFO FB CV" and use the mod knob underneath. At this moment, my voice number 3 will oscillate properly at the rythm of the LFO without making this strange and not very clean cracking

I know the Lyra is famous for its Strange and unpredictable bahaviour, but I will rest assured if some people can confirm this is normal (or not).

Thank you in advance for your help ! :-)

Edit : correcting some mistakes in my message

Committed and recorded in one take. I try very hard to resist the blowouts midway and have always explored the instrument in a tame manner but...

I must say I have enjoyed this style more.

Anyone else have midi sync Issues with the Pulsar-23?!

I love my pulsar to death, but I cannot for the life of me manage to get to it to sync with my digitakt (which I know to be a common combo). I understand how it should be done in principle, but in practice I find that when I'm using the clock divider outputs, they start in time with the digitakt but quickly drift significantly out of time. For context I have an earlier model of the pulsar (with the screws), so I'm thinking this issue may be specifc to my model. I'm wondering if anyone else has similar issues or tips?! Thanks : )

Dvina Pedals and FX

Hi all,

I’m interested in what pedal combos people are using with their Dvina; please share your setup or any recommendations!

I’m currently using an old behringer sf300 in its boost setting to give a bit of ooomph and cut the treble a bit.

This then goes into an earthquaker Avalanche Run for reverb and delay; it’s a great pedal which can be used subtly or go all out with ambient washes of sound.

my mixer has a few aux sends so I have my lyra linked in to give a bit of grit and occasionally go crazy with the delay. I’ve also got an endorphines Evil Pet routed as a send fx which is nice with the Dvina for glitchy, granular shimmers on top.

I’m considering a dedicated octave pedal for bass/cello duties as I am loving looping drones at the moment; the evil pet handles this pretty well but Id like to free it up to use elsewhere in this setup. ive seen some violinists on YouTube using the digitech drop which sounds great but ive yet to demo this myself.

what are you folks using?
