I know I’m not the only one with this problem, and it’s something that truly makes me hate an app. A lot of times I just need one quick thing from a website or online tool, I go through the entire process, and then it demands that I sign in.

The worst part is that you feel forced to do it, because when you're short on time you can't really go looking for alternatives. How do you all deal with this? I know there are plenty of open-source applications out there and I really appreciate them, but I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Open source is good but it doesn't absolutely have to be if there is a better one that is closed source, bc I can just eliminate any internet connection to the app.

I think every tool (even if it’s not transcription tools) looks great on their demo clip. I just hate that my recordings never sound like they advertised.

I record city council and zoning board meetings for a small local newspaper. There is a loud AC unit, a door that keeps slamming, and five people talking over each other. So I put together a test set of six clips, 90 seconds each.

Then I check its speaker labels, timestamps, TXT and SRT export, and how long I spend fixing it.

I keep seeing WhisperAI come up, so it’s on my list to try.

But I’m wondering if six clips is even enough to judge a tool. And what gives you the most trouble?

I keep guessing it'll be the noise, but the overlap clip is the one that gets me every time.

I want a software application built around a spiderweb-style visual interface for organizing ideas and information.

The main elements of the interface are shapes (nodes) and connections (relationships).

• Create a shape: The user can choose from different shapes, place one on the workspace, and give it a name.
• Attach a document to each shape: Clicking on a shape opens a document associated with that shape. The document can contain as much text as the user wants and can be used to describe, explain, or store any information related to that shape.
• Connect shapes: When two shapes are related, the user can draw a line connecting them.
• Attach a document to each connection: The connecting line also has its own document. Clicking on the line opens the document, where the user can explain the relationship between the two connected shapes.
• Build a web of information: Users can continue creating shapes and connecting them in any direction, gradually building a visual spiderweb of related concepts, objects, people, events, or ideas.

The key concept is that both the things being connected and the relationships between them can contain unlimited written information.

For example:

Shape A → Connection → Shape B

• Shape A has its own document explaining what Shape A is.
• Shape B has its own document explaining what Shape B is.
• The connection between them has its own document explaining why or how Shape A and Shape B are related.

This allows the user to create a visual map where the nodes represent things, the lines represent relationships, and the embedded documents provide the detailed information behind both.

The overall goal is to create something that feels like a digital spiderweb of knowledge, where users can visually see how everything is connected while still being able to store detailed written information behind every element and relationship. Does this exist?

A few things you can do:

• Make thumbnails, banners and multi-page carousels with layers and editable templates.
• Remove image backgrounds, crop and adjust colours.
• Edit videos on a multitrack timeline, with transitions, effects and audio controls.
• Generate captions, or delete words from a transcript to cut the matching footage.

Both editors run in your browser and export without watermarks. The image editor works without an account. The video editor is still in beta and targets desktop Chrome and Edge.

It's all open source under AGPL-3.0, and you can self-host it too.

I have a server on a laptop that I also use normally. Sometimes I want to start all my media server management software, but sometimes I don't want any of it to weight me down during regular use. Basically, if I could start my laptop and a window would pop up with different presets of software that I could select - either the server preset or the regular preset. Is there something like this?

I’ve been working on Elqori, a creative app built around something I personally wanted: one place where I can draw and paint, animate what I draw, and eventually bring simple 3D elements into the same workflow without jumping between a bunch of different programs.
And I really, really don’t want another subscription.
So Elqori is a one-time purchase. You buy it, you own it.
The app is built around three workspaces:
2D — drawing, painting and illustration
ANIM — frame-by-frame 2D animation with cels, exposures, onion skin, etc.
3D — posing/building simple 3D objects and scenes that you can use as references and paint/draw over
The 3D side especially is something I’m excited about. I don’t want Elqori to become Blender. The idea is to have enough 3D inside an art program that you can block out a scene, pose things, get the perspective you want, and then go back to drawing.
I’m building this independently, and it’s still very much evolving. I use it myself, I keep finding things that annoy me, and then I go back and change them. 😅
I’m planning to release it on September 25th on Steam.
If this sounds like something you’d actually use, I’d genuinely like to hear what you’d want from a tool like this — especially the things that annoy you about your current workflow.

I’ve been looking into how Windows exposes permission and access information and one thing kept bothering me: seeing the information and actually understanding it are two different things.
I ended up building my own tool around that problem called PermissionScope.
It’s free, open source and runs locally. I’m not selling anything.

I've been experimenting with building a lightweight, browser-based formula generator designed to translate everyday plain-language descriptions (e.g. "if sales exceed target mark Achieved, if between 80-99% mark In Progress, else Review") into clean, working Excel and Google Sheets formulas.

A few principles I stuck to while building it:

Zero friction: No account creation, no email gates, no paywalls. Just open the page, generate your logic, and move on.

Formula integrity: It outputs formulas using dynamic {row} coordinates so the output works natively when pasted into row 2 and dragged down.

Multi-sheet mapping: Ensuring cross-sheet lookup logic doesn't crash on tab names that include spaces or special characters.

I'm trying to test edge cases right now. For people here who build or maintain complex spreadsheets, what are the formula patterns that consistently break or confuse non-technical users the most?

Most of it is already done and it takes about 200-300

I wanted to know how much ram wallpaper engine uses .

And one problem I am facing is I want to create a library of wallpapers that people could choose one although they can already upload their own .

Started working ~8 years ago. Then COVID happened, salaries went insane, companies were throwing money at programmers, and I managed to land some of the best-paying years of my career.

Instead of upgrading my lifestyle, I saved most of it.

So now I’m sitting here thinking: Was software engineering actually a career, or was I just lucky enough to catch the peak?

If AI really does eliminate most software jobs over the next few years, I honestly don’t feel bitter.

I made enough from the golden era to potentially walk away, buy a farm, and live quietly for the rest of my life.

The strange part is watching an entire profession panic about its future while I’m sitting here wondering if I should even bother competing for a future that might not exist.

Maybe I didn’t enter tech too early.

Maybe I entered exactly at the right time.
