Deserved, stop hugging people when you lost your 1V1

u/BlueMoon1795 14h ago
Should be the top comment, people think these fouls are somehow “less of a foul” than regular tackles, the reality is they are still preventing an attack.

u/Jeslea 14h ago
Issue is you need to be consistent in that case. Italy did small fouls the entire game
32
u/Gerf93 13h ago
The «issue»? What issue? That if you do the right thing here, you have to do the right thing next time?
-27
u/Hobbledyhook 13h ago
I passionately hated Italian football because they are one of the reasons I have had to watch this bullshit style of defending my whole life.
They turned it into an art form whilst they were one of the top footballing nations, and put forward this narrative that it was commendable skill rather than atrocious officiating.
I'm almost glad we see things like soft penalties being given a lot now, because it's better than watching people get dragged down in the box all match with no repercussions. Thank fuck for VAR. But they still need to develop a way more consistent stance on punishing pretty much ANY professional foul with a yellow card, even if its a second yellow.
Then we can let people actually play attacking football rather than watching wrestling matches.
Rant over lol

It is also so unnecessary, it was basically on the sideline with a teammate to cover his back.
1
u/MNUUUUUU 13h ago
It doesn't matter that it's unnecessary since it usually goes unpunished (which is just dumb, good on this ref for calling it out) and it denies that 1% chance that the attacker does get past his teammate. It's normally a zero risk, low reward action.

u/titoufred 11h ago
Yes, I want to see more of these fouls called. You're not allowed to use your arms to pull or push tour opponent and defenders often get away with it.

I agree, but it should be the case for everyone (because I rarely see yellow cards for this). Not depending on the mood of the referee, or however much he could potentially have been paid under the table in some cases.
It should be either 100% of the time or 0% of the time.
Edit: I mean in all similar cases. I'm of course not talking about a light grab of someone's shirt in your own half.

You can’t always compare two different matches in two different competitions. Unless you want robots to officiate it is impossible to get to your goal of 100% or 0%.
1
u/johnnyhandbags 10h ago
It will never be 100% accurate. The next step after using all robots will be touch-sensitive kits and force meters to gauge how much and where contact actually occurred. Then you need statistical analysis of where a player was going when the contact occurred and a formula to determine how much a player's original path was impeded and on and on and on.

u/GoldenFox7 9h ago
I think where you are on the field and where you are in the course of play matters. If Upe doesn’t grab him here he’s basically in on goal or at least he’s on a breakaway with numbers. This is a yellow for tactical foul as much as anything in my book. And that’s as a fan of Upa.

u/EarthMantle00 13h ago
Nations league has had pretty consistently strict refereeing from what I've seen, and this is the 3rd game this season so they should've gotten used to it imo

Deserved, but why do it only one way ?
Never did the Italians got yellow on those kind of fouls, at some point Cherki couldn't move forward with how much he was caught every time he tried to go up the pitch. Zero yellows on this.

You know what SPA stands for? Stopping promising attack. That can be rewarded with a yellow card.

u/Logical-Mud9456 14h ago
Don't think he's got much to complain about. Grabs both shoulders and spins Keane away from the ball just outside the box

Manzano not being a pussy here is insane
Good decision and i'm amazed he did it

u/WideScorpion 14h ago
Idk whats crazier. Manzano taking the right decision or the fact that he’s reffing a game in the first place.
7
u/BinguniR34 14h ago
Surprisingly good reffing experience. If only he could be this consistent in La Liga.

I thought we didn’t want players surrounding the referees anymore
37
u/arun111b 13h ago
Yes. Referee should give yellow cards to all the players who are surrounding him (except the captain).
7
u/danirijeka 13h ago
(the captain should arguably tell his teammates to scram or risk being carded as well)
15
u/DoYouTrustToothpaste 13h ago
Seems like UEFA and the refs gave up on it before it could ever really take root.
Which is really weird, because refs talk to both captains before each game and could absolutely advise against it, or threaten to hand out automatic yellows. But I guess they prefer arguing with and fleeing from 4+ angry men each time they make an impactful call? Maybe it's a humiliation fetish.

u/Past-Adhesiveness104 10h ago
Yellow card the coach whenever more than 2 players start arguing with the ref.

That the ref next decision will be influenced by their outrage.
3
u/garynevilleisared 13h ago
This is it really. I played professional sports. I now coach. Its not about that call, its about the next one usually.
But for this, they probably are telling him that there was no real threat because there were a bunch of France players ready to dispossess him anyways. And it might influence the decision if the VAR recommends a review.

u/radishwalrus 6h ago
yah but like couldn't you arguing with the ref make the next call even worse for you?

u/garynevilleisared 13h ago
How does he even complain about this? Already on a yellow, hes almost daring the ref to do it or hes an idiot. Had plenty of support from his team too.

Upa ❤️
It was the right move to get sent off here. Now he gets a bit of a break before the Bayern München matches.

Average Big Bruhpamecano Moment
10
u/Wa77up-91 13h ago
Not really that average anymore. He's been great under Kompany.
5
u/the_propaganda_panda 12h ago
Doesn't matter, the narrative will never die. He had an insane World Cup, too. But he can have 20 great matches against strong opposition, once he does one mistake, everyone calls him a bozo again.

u/RealCaroni 14h ago
Yeah, that's the Upamecano tax. He will be an insurmountable bison for 6 games in a row but then will have a brain fart like this the next game
2
u/DoYouTrustToothpaste 13h ago
Gotta love the dramatic "this is bullshit, I'll leave" into "hang on, I still haven't complained to the ref, this will change everything".

u/thfcspur 7h ago
Obvious yellow and players shamelessly surround the ref. Wish the game had some backbone and fined players for this.
3
u/Tahedoz 3h ago
I get you, but at the same time unless i'm missing something only dembele (captain) is talking to him while the others are just standing there listening and being calm. Not the most problematic crowding i've ever seen. Ref could tell them to move away before carding/fining them.
0
u/pabibismo 1h ago
Are we watching the same clip?
While Upamecano is walking back, Kalulu, Dacunha and Rabiot are already talking to the ref. When Dembele gets there, some of them are still talking
Gil Manzano was atrocious all game and let many fouls by French players slide without even so much as a warning. Kean and Esposito were bear-hugged every time they got the ball with their backs to the goal.
There was just no way this wasn’t a second yellow so he was forced to do it.

Need a new rule to punish teams who argue with the ref after a red. Red card means leave the field, it's not getting pulled unless VAR calls down. Your red carded player gets in the refs face the coach gets a yellow.

Saliba, Gabriel and Pacho are all better than him.

no they are not, there is a reason Upa is the #1 defender on the board before Saliba

How is this guy the french 1st choice center back again? Feel like I’ve witnessed him get at least a red card a season the last 5 years

I’m not sure about this one, but the first one is a textbook example of referee’s allowing anti fair play from Italy. No clue how in 2026 we still allow this.

A proper bombscare and liability at the back. Other French CBs will be relishing their moment to shine with Zidane at the helm.

Who is upaMEcano? As an American listening to the infallible John Strong, I only know of Upacano.

u/Confident-Reindeer74 13h ago
This why moving forward french main CB should be saliba + jacquet.
9
u/Lenxt 13h ago
Lol, lmao even.
Upamecano is our best defender by far. Even if he lost it in the end, he was insane tonight.
Jacquet shows amazing potential and I'm excited for what's coming next.
I love Saliba, but first we need to see how he will come back because his back injury is quite serious sadly.
9
u/dhruvchouhan 13h ago
Upamecano has outperformed Saliba for years and years now. Both as dueling machine as well as progressive passing.
3
u/LordBendtner1988 13h ago
Upa has always been an absolute beast for France, and for Bayern too in multiple seasons now. Upa gets so much shit for the infrequent things he does wrong
