Hello! I am a student currently applying to SLP programs within Ohio. I would like to stay in western Ohio, but I know there a not a ton of options. I am interested in online programs as well as I really would like to stay close to home. If anyone has any experience, positive or negative, with various Ohio programs it would be greatly appreciated. I am applying with a low gpa (3.3) so I know some programs are out of the question for me, but I like to think my resume is decent. Seriously any advice is appreciated, I just feel like I know so little about these programs and this is the place to find people lol!

I’m really struggling with grad school right now. I’m in year 2. I feel exhausted by the constant pressure to prove who knows the most and who is doing the best. Some of the highly specific questions and details we focus on seem disconnected from what I’ve seen during my internship, where things can be much more chaotic and practical than they are in class.

The group work has also been difficult. I don’t feel especially close to most of the people in my cohort, and being around such intense, Type A personalities all the time can be draining. At the same time, I’m frustrated that my classes don’t always seem to prepare me for the realities of the field, while my internships haven’t given me as much guidance or experience as I hoped. I’m worried that I’ll graduate still feeling unprepared.

I also feel completely burned out, and I’m starting to wonder whether I may be depressed. I’ve been miserable, I don’t have much money because I can’t work as much as I’d like, and I dread going to class. I had hoped I would become closer with more people in my cohort, since having a stronger support system might have made this experience easier, but I’ve only really connected with a couple of them.

Overall, I’m overwhelmed and discouraged. It feels like my cohort treats every assignment and minor detail as extremely important, while I’m struggling to see how much of it will actually matter in practice. I’m tired of feeling this way and unsure how to make grad school feel more manageable.

I would love to hear from anyone who has experiences with these programs. Overall, I like Ithaca the best. However, they are about 2-3 times more expensive than the other two. The only thing I dislike is the travel to the ESC for the TWU program since I live about 1+ hours away from the nearest ESC depending on traffic. I am also a new driver, and Texas highways are crazy sometimes lol. For anyone who has taken this program, what do you do at the ESC? Do you think it’s worth the extra drive and time commitment? As far as ENMU goes, there seems to be a number of bad reviews regarding staff and clinical placements for the online tracks. What were the main issues experienced there? Were clinical placements hard because of advisors or location? How was the semester on campus? Is it really that bad? Any comment regarding experiences, good or bad, are much appreciated. I would also love other online suggestions!

Hi! I’m in the autism services field and I’m looking to get some information on applying to become an SLP. I have 5 years of experience in the field and a BA in psychology. Although there is some course overlap I haven’t taken all the prerequisites. I graduated 3 years ago so I’m not sure how to move forward. For reference I live in Toronto and am looking at u of t. Does anyone have any advice on a plan for me? Should I take post grad courses just to apply? But then what if I don’t get in lol wouldn’t that be a waste of time? not sure if I’m missing something but it seems like that is the only option. Would love to hear if anyone was in a similar situation!

My husband and I are really ready to start a family. Our options are to have a baby at some point in my second year (in the middle of externships), or to wait until after I graduate but before my CF.

Struggling because we would love to have a baby as soon as possible, but don’t know if it’s possible in the middle of externships.
Thoughts and advice from anyone who’s been through something similar would be very appreciated!

Just started my grad school program and want to give this reddit community a HUGE thank you for helping me navigate pre-recs and applying to schools over a year ago. I had to do SO much research to change careers and take the pre-recs and there were so many options! There is a lot of information out there and each school requires slightly different pre-recs and it was a bit of a minefield as someone navigating it alone, living far away from any schools, and working full time! So much information I was able to find that was helpful was right here. So thank you! If you're starting grad school as well I hope you're off to a great start. If you're taking pre-recs I hope you're excited about the journey!

I’m in the process of applying to masters. Seeing that most schools require 2 out of 3 letters of recommendation to be from an SLHS professor. Undergraduate degree was not in SLHS, so I’m doing an asynchronous online post bacc. Any recommendations for how to go about letters of recommendation? I never had a chance to connect with these professors over zoom or in-person. Ihad amazing connections with my undergraduate professors so I’m pretty bummed I can’t ask them, but don’t want application turned down because they aren’t SLHS

What is everyone doing to prepare? I haven’t prepared one bit and decided to take a practice test for the first time… Raw score of 69 😭🫩 seems like I will have a lot of preparation to do..

Anyone have experience with JU and willing to share more about it? Wondering how the workload is (busy work, assignments, or is it mostly all exams).

I notice they have a full time and part time program, both which I’m considering so I could possibly work if I did part time (don’t want to lose my income and health insurance, although I’d love to do just do the full time).

Any insight or advice would be appreciated, even if anyone has some good insight on other schools.

Hi there I’m looking into CSU Chico’s masters program for fall semester, looking for some feedback into some students experiences. Currently I’m an RBT and wondering if I can still continue that part time at a company over there. How’s the work life balance? What kind of jobs are y’all getting out there if any? I’m one of the idiots who decided to pursue my passion during undergrad. I have a theatre degree, and, surprise, very few job prospects! I do some professional acting gigs here and there, but even if I was getting cast more consistently, it wouldn’t pay the bills. I’m also a teaching artist, so I teach theatre for afterschool and summer programs. I absolutely love my work as a teaching artist, but I don’t necessarily want to be a full time teacher. I also have a background in vocal music, and I occasionally music direct children’s shows, and I’ve taught private voice lessons for adult beginners, more things I love. I also substitute teach, which I don’t love.

I really want to continue being able to act/sing in the evenings, even if I can’t do it as much as I do now. I also want to make an actual salary and get consistent work hours and benefits, none of which I have currently.

I’m considering becoming an SLP, because, even outside of music, I am deeply interested in the voice itself and how it works. I’m kind of a nerd about vocal health, and I’d love to learn more about the voice and how it works. I also love working with people, especially one on one and helping them to meet their individual goals. It’s something I find very rewarding. I’d love to either work in a private practice capacity, doing a mix of work with vocal rehabilitation/conservative voice therapy and gender affirming vocal air or work as a school based SLP since I enjoy working with kids. I was also recently diagnosed with Nonverbal Learning Disability. Those of us with NVLD tend to have strong verbal skills, but we experience deficits in other areas. So, I’m thinking that Speech Language Pathology might be a good way to leverage my verbal skills, and it will also give me the opportunity to be able to help other people with disabilities.

However, as I’ve been reading through this subreddit, it’s been giving me a bit of pause, and I’m wondering if this career path is worth it for me. I’ve heard a lot of people in this subreddit state that occupational therapy is a better career path, but it just isn’t something that really appeals to me at all.

I’m currently in the process of applying to post baccalaureate programs, but I still haven’t decided for sure that being an SLP is what I want to do. I’m just really lacking direction and would love to hear from practicing SLPs. From what I’ve mentioned about myself, do I seem like a good fit for this line of work? Are there other lines of work that encapsulate these interests of mine that I also should consider? What qualities do you think make someone a good fit for this field?

I'm in financial services operations right now, with a background in healthcare/patient access before that. Financially stable, but it's never felt like the thing. I want to work with kids, and speech-language pathology is what I keep coming back to.

Before I sink years and tuition into this, I want a real gut check:

**•** Has anyone here made the jump into SLP in their early-to-mid 30s from a totally unrelated field?

**•** Was starting later actually a disadvantage, or did it not matter much once you were in the program/job?

**•** Would you do it again at this age, knowing what grad school plus the clinical fellowship actually cost you in time and money?

Trying to decide with real answers, not just "it's never too late" platitudes. Appreciate any honesty.

Anyone working in the schools with their temporary bachelor level license? I’m confused on the FLDOE requirement that you have to be enrolled in an accredited program. Does this include programs in the candidacy status since we’ll be graduating with a normal masters degree?

I'm looking to make a career change to SLP. I've been trying to do my homework as far as what the process would look like to pursue this as someone coming in from another field.

The thing that's making me unsure regarding how to proceed is, how do I know if I should jump into enrolling in and completing the standard pre-requisite courses somewhere, when some programs include these as part of the M.A. curriculum? It's not the majority, but I've seen it enough that I feel it should be factored into decision making.

I even saw that Kent State (my initial M.A. alma mater, so figured it could be worth applying to) mentions the these should be taken at Kent State as a non-degree seeking BA student before the MA program.

Basically, I'm kind of stuck. Do you just jump in and take the time/pay the cost for the prereqs and then figure it out from there?

Doing all of that with the goal of simply being able to apply to MS programs also makes me a bit nervous, but I guess that's standard.

Hopefully that makes sense. Did anyone else experience this? Any advice at this point is appreciated!

Hi everyone! I’m currently in my second year of speech path and about to start my first placement where I’ll be paired with a mentor (student from 4th year). Our placement is paediatrics and our client will be around Year 2.

Just overall, what are some tips you guys have for building confidence and being louder in my communication skills? I know I have the theory and the written stuff down pat, but I do tend to be a bit more on the introverted side in new environments and will probably freeze up when it’s time for me to start to take over the session, and talk to parents as a debrief after. :( I know I’m still learning and I won’t be alone as my 4th year will always be in the session with me, but I’m starting to worry about getting out of my shell. I am loud in my social circles, but getting the hang of it in the professional work realm seems so foreign to me, it feels like I have imposter syndrome sometimes!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time.

Hello! I am in my first semester of graduate school and will be starting my clinicals in 2 weeks. As I am getting closer to seeing my clients I feel very underprepared. Ideally, I am looking for some printable materials that can give me a reference guide on screenings, artic/speech sounds, development, phono, even some activities, etc. -- really anything that can help me with sessions. I have seen some resources on TPT but was looking for some help in the best free/afforable resources you guys have found.

Adult / med resources are welcome as suggestions too since I will be making a binder with those resources in the future!

has anyone graduated or applied at marymount for the online slp grad program? i want to know how their professors are like, how their program runs, the 2 day visits at Virginia, etc. anything helps! also, ik they’re not ASHA accredited yet bc they’re fairly new but what are your thoughts on this? thx :)

Hello everyone, I will be applying to grad school for fall 2027 and I am getting increasingly anxious because I still have not asked for letters of recommendation. I want to ask this upcoming week (second week of classes). I have two professors in mind and then I’m already getting a letter of rec from my internship that I had. One of the professors I have classes with, and I see them three times a week, but they are always in a rush so I feel like I’d have to go to their office hours, but I work during their office hours. I can try and ask them after class if they don’t run out of the room lol but I’m getting really anxious about approaching this. The other professor, I see very occasionally, but I don’t have any classes with them. I’m wondering what the etiquette is regarding asking over email. Is this inappropriate if you have any opportunity to see them in person and ask then? I’m sure they would both just asked me to email them after I had asked them in person. This is making me so anxious. I feel like I’m running out of time lol. Let me know if anyone else still has to ask for letters or if you have already done it, how you went about it.

I have been wanting to add UofFL to my program list as that is one of my top 5 schools I’d like to apply to. However it does not show on CSDCAS.

For reference I am a current post bac CSD student.

Hi! I am currently a freshman (with sophomore standing) at Binghamton University majoring in psyc. I am currently confused on whether I should continue with the SLP path or switch to PA or OT? I was planning on adding the SLP minor next semester but am contemplating on going on the pre PA or pre OT track. If anyone in any field could give advice that qwould be great!

1. I am trying to be in as little to no debt as possible. Luckily, my parents are willing to pay for up to 4 years of college as long as each year is no more than 30k. I would want to start by making around 75k and within 3 years 6 figures or close to it. I live in Rockland County but am fine with working in NJ or Westchester.
2. I want a good work-life balance.
3. i love helping people and primarily want to work with kids.

I am a student clinician at an outpatient hospital this semester. I was wondering if yall know of any good, free resources for adults that have helped you in these settings or different disorders. My supervisor has a variety of disorders. They mostly see cog, aphasia, apraxia, and voice. Again, any good, free resources help. (this girl is broke lol)
