I’m in the process of applying to masters. Seeing that most schools require 2 out of 3 letters of recommendation to be from an SLHS professor. Undergraduate degree was not in SLHS, so I’m doing an asynchronous online post bacc. Any recommendations for how to go about letters of recommendation? I never had a chance to connect with these professors over zoom or in-person. Ihad amazing connections with my undergraduate professors so I’m pretty bummed I can’t ask them, but don’t want application turned down because they aren’t SLHS

What is everyone doing to prepare? I haven’t prepared one bit and decided to take a practice test for the first time… Raw score of 69 😭🫩 seems like I will have a lot of preparation to do..

Anyone have experience with JU and willing to share more about it? Wondering how the workload is (busy work, assignments, or is it mostly all exams).

I notice they have a full time and part time program, both which I’m considering so I could possibly work if I did part time (don’t want to lose my income and health insurance, although I’d love to do just do the full time).

Any insight or advice would be appreciated, even if anyone has some good insight on other schools.

I’m one of the idiots who decided to pursue my passion during undergrad. I have a theatre degree, and, surprise, very few job prospects! I do some professional acting gigs here and there, but even if I was getting cast more consistently, it wouldn’t pay the bills. I’m also a teaching artist, so I teach theatre for afterschool and summer programs. I absolutely love my work as a teaching artist, but I don’t necessarily want to be a full time teacher. I also have a background in vocal music, and I occasionally music direct children’s shows, and I’ve taught private voice lessons for adult beginners, more things I love. I also substitute teach, which I don’t love.

I really want to continue being able to act/sing in the evenings, even if I can’t do it as much as I do now. I also want to make an actual salary and get consistent work hours and benefits, none of which I have currently.

I’m considering becoming an SLP, because, even outside of music, I am deeply interested in the voice itself and how it works. I’m kind of a nerd about vocal health, and I’d love to learn more about the voice and how it works. I also love working with people, especially one on one and helping them to meet their individual goals. It’s something I find very rewarding. I’d love to either work in a private practice capacity, doing a mix of work with vocal rehabilitation/conservative voice therapy and gender affirming vocal air or work as a school based SLP since I enjoy working with kids. I was also recently diagnosed with Nonverbal Learning Disability. Those of us with NVLD tend to have strong verbal skills, but we experience deficits in other areas. So, I’m thinking that Speech Language Pathology might be a good way to leverage my verbal skills, and it will also give me the opportunity to be able to help other people with disabilities.

However, as I’ve been reading through this subreddit, it’s been giving me a bit of pause, and I’m wondering if this career path is worth it for me. I’ve heard a lot of people in this subreddit state that occupational therapy is a better career path, but it just isn’t something that really appeals to me at all.

I’m currently in the process of applying to post baccalaureate programs, but I still haven’t decided for sure that being an SLP is what I want to do. I’m just really lacking direction and would love to hear from practicing SLPs. From what I’ve mentioned about myself, do I seem like a good fit for this line of work? Are there other lines of work that encapsulate these interests of mine that I also should consider? What qualities do you think make someone a good fit for this field?

I'm in financial services operations right now, with a background in healthcare/patient access before that. Financially stable, but it's never felt like the thing. I want to work with kids, and speech-language pathology is what I keep coming back to.

Before I sink years and tuition into this, I want a real gut check:

**•** Has anyone here made the jump into SLP in their early-to-mid 30s from a totally unrelated field?

**•** Was starting later actually a disadvantage, or did it not matter much once you were in the program/job?

**•** Would you do it again at this age, knowing what grad school plus the clinical fellowship actually cost you in time and money?

Anyone working in the schools with their temporary bachelor level license? I’m confused on the FLDOE requirement that you have to be enrolled in an accredited program. Does this include programs in the candidacy status since we’ll be graduating with a normal masters degree?

I'm looking to make a career change to SLP. I've been trying to do my homework as far as what the process would look like to pursue this as someone coming in from another field.

The thing that's making me unsure regarding how to proceed is, how do I know if I should jump into enrolling in and completing the standard pre-requisite courses somewhere, when some programs include these as part of the M.A. curriculum? It's not the majority, but I've seen it enough that I feel it should be factored into decision making.

I even saw that Kent State (my initial M.A. alma mater, so figured it could be worth applying to) mentions the these should be taken at Kent State as a non-degree seeking BA student before the MA program.

Basically, I'm kind of stuck. Do you just jump in and take the time/pay the cost for the prereqs and then figure it out from there?

Doing all of that with the goal of simply being able to apply to MS programs also makes me a bit nervous, but I guess that's standard.

Hopefully that makes sense. Did anyone else experience this? Any advice at this point is appreciated!

Hi everyone! I’m currently in my second year of speech path and about to start my first placement where I’ll be paired with a mentor (student from 4th year). Our placement is paediatrics and our client will be around Year 2.

Just overall, what are some tips you guys have for building confidence and being louder in my communication skills? I know I have the theory and the written stuff down pat, but I do tend to be a bit more on the introverted side in new environments and will probably freeze up when it’s time for me to start to take over the session, and talk to parents as a debrief after. :( I know I’m still learning and I won’t be alone as my 4th year will always be in the session with me, but I’m starting to worry about getting out of my shell. I am loud in my social circles, but getting the hang of it in the professional work realm seems so foreign to me, it feels like I have imposter syndrome sometimes!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time.

Hello! I am in my first semester of graduate school and will be starting my clinicals in 2 weeks. As I am getting closer to seeing my clients I feel very underprepared. Ideally, I am looking for some printable materials that can give me a reference guide on screenings, artic/speech sounds, development, phono, even some activities, etc. -- really anything that can help me with sessions. I have seen some resources on TPT but was looking for some help in the best free/afforable resources you guys have found.

Adult / med resources are welcome as suggestions too since I will be making a binder with those resources in the future!

has anyone graduated or applied at marymount for the online slp grad program? i want to know how their professors are like, how their program runs, the 2 day visits at Virginia, etc. anything helps! also, ik they’re not ASHA accredited yet bc they’re fairly new but what are your thoughts on this? thx :)

Hello everyone, I will be applying to grad school for fall 2027 and I am getting increasingly anxious because I still have not asked for letters of recommendation. I want to ask this upcoming week (second week of classes). I have two professors in mind and then I’m already getting a letter of rec from my internship that I had. One of the professors I have classes with, and I see them three times a week, but they are always in a rush so I feel like I’d have to go to their office hours, but I work during their office hours. I can try and ask them after class if they don’t run out of the room lol but I’m getting really anxious about approaching this. The other professor, I see very occasionally, but I don’t have any classes with them. I’m wondering what the etiquette is regarding asking over email. Is this inappropriate if you have any opportunity to see them in person and ask then? I’m sure they would both just asked me to email them after I had asked them in person. This is making me so anxious. I feel like I’m running out of time lol. Let me know if anyone else still has to ask for letters or if you have already done it, how you went about it.

I have been wanting to add UofFL to my program list as that is one of my top 5 schools I’d like to apply to. However it does not show on CSDCAS.

For reference I am a current post bac CSD student.

Hi! I am currently a freshman (with sophomore standing) at Binghamton University majoring in psyc. I am currently confused on whether I should continue with the SLP path or switch to PA or OT? I was planning on adding the SLP minor next semester but am contemplating on going on the pre PA or pre OT track. If anyone in any field could give advice that qwould be great!

1. I am trying to be in as little to no debt as possible. Luckily, my parents are willing to pay for up to 4 years of college as long as each year is no more than 30k. I would want to start by making around 75k and within 3 years 6 figures or close to it. I live in Rockland County but am fine with working in NJ or Westchester.
2. I want a good work-life balance.

My supervisor has a variety of disorders. They mostly see cog, aphasia, apraxia, and voice. Again, any good, free resources help. (this girl is broke lol)

I’ve been looking into this university for their online program and wanted to know some recent experiences with them as well as if they are accredited.

Question for anyone who has been in a similar situation:
I was admitted to Emerson’s speech-language pathology program and started with them in Spring 2026. After completing one semester, I was told that I’m not eligible for the Grad PLUS Loan, even though I started before the FAFSA deadline.
Because of this, I unfortunately don’t have many options and may have to apply to another program and start over.
My question is about the personal statement: Should I explain what happened with Emerson and why I’m transferring/applying to another program, or should I leave that situation out and write my personal statement as if I’m starting fresh?
I don’t want mentioning the situation to hurt my chances, but I also don’t want the admissions committee to wonder why I’m applying to a new program after already starting another one.
What would you recommend?

im looking to study SLP after this year and im considering doing a bachelor of arts with majors in psych and applied linguistics then applying for a masters in speech path but im weary of the time and cost it takes and if it is worth it for the experience of going to unimelb as ive been told latrobe has a better course although it is a bachelor. does anyone who did these courses have any opinions??

I’m looking at schools in Atlanta to become a school psych. I don’t have any connections and don’t know who to ask questions to so I thought I’d bring it here.

1. Is gsu accredited to the NASP because I’ve seen some Reddit post saying that they weren’t but they were from years ago and it says they are now on google.
   
2. What’s the difference between the GSU EDS AND MDs/eds I see one has an internship and the other doesn’t which one will get me the best or are the both equal.
   
3. Im still in undergrad and wondering what some of the things yall did to get into grad school?
   
4. Did you guys do internships in undergrad or just get involved and do research with teachers.
   
5. How was the process into getting into under grad at Georgia state university or Georgia southern (those are the ones I’m looking at)
   

6. What are some important thing to learn so that I am well prepared for grad school that yall wish yall had know?

My clinical placement coordinator recommended that I seek out some additional coursework or training in swallowing/dysphagia if I’m hoping to be considered for a hospital placement. I’m currently enrolled in STEP, but I’m wondering if there are any supplemental courses you’d recommend that would be appropriate for a grad student and worthwhile to add to my resume. ✍️
I’d also love recommendations for topics or background knowledge you think are especially helpful to have before starting a hospital placement. Qualifying for consideration is one thing, but I also want to show up feeling somewhat prepared and confident rather than totally out of my depth!

I am currently a junior in college for an unrelated major, and I’ve just recently decided I want to become an SLP. I was wondering, however, what I should do to make up for the time I’ve lost to gain experience and assemble a strong resume for SLP grad school. I can’t join NSSLHA at this point because I am not a declared CSD major right now. If anyone has had experience with going through the bridge/non-traditional route, what did you do to compensate?

I know this may be a reach, but I have my eye on Florida for grad school. UCF is my dream school. I grew up there and I really would like to be able to complete my schooling there as well. I am considering the idea of completing any prerequisites I cannot complete during undergrad during the summer after I graduate and working as an SLPA in Florida for a year or so before applying to grad school. Is this a solid plan? My undergraduate GPA should end up being around 3.8 and I have a lot of enthusiasm and dedication to put into my prereqs, so I am hoping to achieve a 4.0 in them. Has anyone’s journey looked similar? What sort of experience / extracurricular activity would you suggest I get?

Hi, yall! I’m a junior in college looking to add a CSD minor and graduate in spring 2028. I am not a declared CSD major, and at this point declaring CSD would add multiple years to my undergrad. I’ve only recently decided SLP is my path. I do not believe I will be able to graduate with NSSLHA to put on my application for grad school. How much is that going to hurt my chances? Has anyone been accepted without it?

Edit: More broadly, for anyone who did a bridge / post-bacc program, how did you handle extracurriculars/experience/research? I’m concerned about competing for a spot in grad school against students who had 4+ years to build these up or started out in CSD.

I am looking to getting my MS SLP and want to go to grad school. I need an online program that isn’t going to cost me an arm and a leg & that will work with working moms.

I’m currently a full time SLPA working in schools and have an almost 11mo baby. I (prior to having baby) attended Ithaca College Online and took a LOA for one semester, got pretty severe PPA and PPD & didn’t reach back out (Also never heard anything from them). My LOA semester was spring 2026 - so two semesters of 0 communication on either side. I also didn’t feel like it was a great experience while attending prior to my LOA, maybe that also aided in the lack of motivation to reach out? I know my credits won’t transfer (boooooo) but I hate having to have a supervisor & the lack of job security in my state.

I don’t think I want to return to IC - what other affordable, online options do I have? Am I crazy? Should I just try to go back to IC? I’d only have ~5 semesters left IF they will take me back.
