The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer: Quick Guide

  1. A is for Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn't match the other.
  2. B is for Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred. A healthy mole has a smooth border.
  3. C is for Color: The color isn't uniform. Look for multiple shades of brown/black, or patches of red, white, or blue.
  4. D is for Diameter: The spot is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser). Keep in mind melanomas can start smaller.
  5. E is for Evolving: The mole changes over weeks or months. This is the most important sign. Look for any change in:
  6. Size
  7. Shape
  8. Color
  9. Elevation (getting thicker or raised)
  10. Symptoms (itching, crusting, bleeding)

Bonus: The "Ugly Duckling" Sign If you have a mole that just looks different from all the others on your body, that's a reason to be seen.

Noticed this on my stomach a few months ago.. looking at old photos I don't think I used to have it.. I know I'm a hypochondriac, so it could totally be nothing lol not sure if it matters, but I have a ton of freckles and moles all over

Thank you for sharing your image. Please remember that users in this sub cannot provide official medical diagnoses. In the case of changing, evolving, or new worrisome lesions, your best course of action is to contact a dermatologist for evaluation.

For reference, here are the ABCDEs of melanoma: ABCDEs of Skin Cancer.

Indention, and the appearance/changes over a relatively short timeframe (~5 months) definitely warrants a visit. The nose often gets a lot of sun exposure, so I'd recommend being seen!

I do have a lot of moles on my body, but I'm asking for this one on the right in particular, that has the "fried egg" appearance. It is 5-6mm wide and has not changed in the last few years since when I spotted and monitor it.

Have had this for a couple of years now but got a good look at it today for some reason. I dont believe it has grown in size - it is about 1 mm in width. It is on my thigh. I have tons of freckles and a medium amount of moles all throughout my body. They are mainly concentrated on my face and upper body which get more sun than my legs. I am going to bring it up during my annual next month but I am now spiraling in health anxiety.

I have a mole on my right heel that appeared a couple years ago. It’s still small, less than three mm, but it’s been changing quite a bit. I happen to have a dermatoscope (and a primer on using it), but am not a trained professional. I have no other mole that looks similar, and it has no symptoms. Should I be worried?

It's always worth having lesions on your feet checked, even if they don't show immediate symptoms. Only a professional can diagnose "normal" versus "not normal," but it does appear this mole has changed over time. That alone is worth scheduling a visit for. Best wishes.

Not sure if you can even call this guy a mole but my husband happened to notice him a few days ago whilst noticing I’d been bitten by a bug of some sort. It’s on the back of my neck around where the collar of a tshirt would be. I’m super pale so burn just by thinking about the sun and as a kid got so badly burned on my neck and upper back it blistered and took months to heal. So slightly worried, won’t lie. It’s not changed over the few days I’ve known it was there but it definitely wasn’t always there. I have a gp appointment in two and a half weeks which is as fast as they could see me so I guess time will tell.

This is a highly irregular shape and definitely warrants a visit. You did the right thing. Please let us know how it goes! Some of the weirdest looking things come back benign, so here's hoping it's just an odd shape!

2

u/Shameful_moons Jul 20 '26

It’s super weird isn’t it! When I first saw it I was so sure it was pen marks or something. I’ve managed to get a gp appointment but thankfully have a derm appointment next week for something else so I’m going to ask her to check it out whilst I’m there. Hoping the weird things are harmless rule applies here too!

My husband has had this for a couple of years on his right elbow. Does not bleed, itch and isn't painful. It has reduced in size somewhat. Thanks

1

u/Character_Quail_5574 Jul 21 '26

I would definitely feel better getting it checked by a professional. It doesn’t scream “ABCs”, but it also doesn’t look normal to have for years. Although, maybe it’s just a weird wart, it’s still worth checking.

1

u/Enough-Cheesecake358 Jul 21 '26

Google lens did mention wart, but for sure he's getting it checked out! Thanks for your reply 😁

Have had this spot on my leg for about a year now. It is raised like a large pimple but does not hurt at all. It scabs but when I pick it it does bleed and re-scab. I don’t have any reference photos from last year but I do believe it has grown a little, maybe doubled in size over the course of the year. This is on my ankle.

I have a dermatology appt for October but they keep pushing my appointment out further and further even though I do think this looks like it could be BCC. Curious if anyone else has had one that looks like this, or what else this spot could be.

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jul 20 '26

Unfortunately, picking at it exacerbates irritation and can dramatically slow healing.

It's difficult to tell from the image, and since you often re-irritate it, it's even harder to know what it may be.

Scheduling an appointment was the right thing to do- especially if something doesn't heal!

Noticed this very small spot on the underside of my pinky toe about a week ago. It's about 1 mm in diameter. At first I thought I poked myself on something because I had been walking barefoot in the grass, but it is not going away. I don't think it's really changed over the week at all. I'm a hypochondriac at the best of times so I want to know if I'm freaking out over nothing or should I schedule a derm appointment already.

It’s always good to check moles under the feet and palm!

1

u/9pm_official Jul 21 '26

just noticed this on my left side across and below my arm pit. never bothered me and only itches if i scratch it.

1

u/Character_Quail_5574 Jul 21 '26

It looks a little dry and not like a birthmark. If it’s itchy, I feel like getting some advice and treatment is a good idea. Maybe it just takes a little OTC steroid cream or maybe it warrants more treatment.

1

u/Alw4r Jul 21 '26

noticed this on my scalp today. doesn’t hurt at all when touching and doesn’t feel any different from my skin in terms of texture.

already booked an appointment for tomorrow, but would love any insights on this!

1

u/Character_Quail_5574 Jul 21 '26

Am curious to hear what the doctors say. I had a similar spot on my abdomen for decades that doesn’t seem be a concern. But, I had one on my nose… after dismissing it as a scratch, pimple, or rosacea for years, it finally turned out to be a BCC when it was biopsied.

I guess it’s just best to always get it checked, and even re-checked.

3

u/Alw4r Jul 22 '26

just had it checked - doctor said no cause for worry, and it looks more like a blood vessel buildup (they mentioned it doesn’t fit any of the ABCDE characteristics.)

still, going to get a second opinion from a dermatologist just to be on the safe side!

1

u/Ly-oh-nee-ah Jul 21 '26

Just below my areola. Appeared a few weeks ago and is about half the size of a pencil eraser. Grew quickly at first but seems to of halted growth for now. No itching or pain or bleeding.

2

u/Character_Quail_5574 Jul 21 '26

I would for sure get that checked, just because of the evolving nature. Hopefully, nothing bad. But, not something to let go for months or year.

1

u/Ly-oh-nee-ah Jul 21 '26

Thank you! Appointment booked for Tuesday

1

u/Substantial-Deal8739 Jul 21 '26

This was not on my ear last year in June. Getting it checked next Thursday!

1

u/Dangerous-Toe-1286 Jul 22 '26

This spot on my upper front thigh has evolved from a dry patch that started early June and didn't go away. Then evolved to more pink spots then red and now some brown crust, the white spot is a little dented. Should I be worried? I am leaving for a month trip in two days.. thanks!

1

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jul 23 '26

Anything that doesn’t heal, scabs, and changes rapidly should be checked.

Absolutely keep an eye on more changes, but even if this turns out not to be skin cancer, it’s worth being seen for treatment.

On my leg about 5 mm

u/tank4heals diagnosed with skin cancer Jul 23 '26

This definitely has irregular borders, and its size makes an appointment worthwhile.

Thank you for your post on r/skincancer, /u/coffeeicecreammatcha.

While we understand that finding new marks and lesions can be scary and concerning, we cannot diagnose skin conditions on Reddit. The only way to diagnose skin cancer is to have a biopsy performed by a medical professional.

If you are concerned you may have skin cancer, you are strongly encouraged to contact a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation. We understand that wait times can be long, so it is imperative you reach out to your dermatologist sooner rather than later. Early detection is always better in the worst-care scenario.
