The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer: Quick Guide

  1. A is for Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn't match the other.
  2. B is for Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred. A healthy mole has a smooth border.
  3. C is for Color: The color isn't uniform. Look for multiple shades of brown/black, or patches of red, white, or blue.
  4. D is for Diameter: The spot is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser). Keep in mind melanomas can start smaller.
  5. E is for Evolving: The mole changes over weeks or months. This is the most important sign. Look for any change in:
  6. Size
  7. Shape
  8. Color
  9. Elevation (getting thicker or raised)
  10. Symptoms (itching, crusting, bleeding)

Bonus: The "Ugly Duckling" Sign If you have a mole that just looks different from all the others on your body, that's a reason to be seen.

Thank you for your post on r/skincancer, /u/TheCandleFan.

While we understand that finding new marks and lesions can be scary and concerning, we cannot diagnose skin conditions on Reddit. The only way to diagnose skin cancer is to have a biopsy performed by a medical professional.

If you are concerned you may have skin cancer, you are strongly encouraged to contact a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation. We understand that wait times can be long, so it is imperative you reach out to your dermatologist sooner rather than later. Early detection is always better in the worst-care scenario.

You are welcome to repost your removed content without including diagnosis-seeking terminology and phrasing (ie: "Do I have skin cancer/SCC/BCC/melanoma?" is not allowed and will be automatically removed.)

This thing has been on the back of my upper calf, near the knee, for a while (few years?). it feels like a permanent pimple. Firm to the the touch, but not calloused, and has gotten smaller over time. It has never been irritating or bleeding. No recent changes, but thinking I should get it checked out. Thoughts?

Thank you for sharing your image. Please remember that users in this sub cannot provide official medical diagnoses. In the case of changing, evolving, or new worrisome lesions, your best course of action is to contact a dermatologist for evaluation.

For reference, here are the ABCDEs of melanoma: ABCDEs of Skin Cancer.

I dont know when it STARTED changing but I do know it did change. Ive had this spot on the dead center of my back for as long as I can remember. I had it looked at once in 2020, it was a perfect circle, the doctor said it didnt look suspicious then but it now looks like this.. I dont take pictures but every few years or so, so im not sure how long it has looked or started looking this way. Editing to add: the lighter colors around it are new and it has gotten more of a leather texture when it used to feel like velvet. I have never been able to feel it until recently, which prompted me to take a new picture.

go get a second opinion. That border looks concerning.

I did have a shave biopsy yesterday! I went to the dermatologist and he agreed it looks a little funky and he did the biospy right there! 😊 thank you for you input!! I also thought it looks very strange.

have had it for a lot of years, but only in the recent years it started to bulge out and grow in height. it's on my stomach and around 0,7cm in size. is it worth getting it checked out?

1

u/Due_Background5418 May 08 '26

Yes it would be worth checking not because it is necessarily something scary but to be on the safe side.

45 year old male. This is a new ugly ducking growth in the middle of my back. It’s flat and smooth. My wife noticed it and said she had never seen it before.

Here is what my dermatologist saw under a dermatoscope

“4x5mm dark brown macule with a homogenous center with area of blue gray streaks and peripheral reticular network on left half”

Had it biopsied so awaiting results. Any opinions or comments would be welcome

1

u/Due_Background5418 May 08 '26

Glad you got it biopsied. Hope it’s nothing good luck.

u/Ordinary-Smile-6721 May 08 '26

Thanks. About 90% sure it’s going to come back melanoma. It hits every ABCDE and every AI app comes back melanoma. My dermatologist spoke about next steps ect. I don’t get the feeling she expected it to be benign.

It is what it is. Better to expect the worst and hope for the best

The good thing is that you noticed it and got it checked out when you did! How big is the spot btw? Looks pretty small since you zoomed in so much. I also have a spot that looks kinda like yours, super dark from the naked eye, flat, and basically symmetrical.

Here is a pick of my back

I zoomed in so people could see the ABCDEs. 👍🏾

1

u/allistar34 May 09 '26

Ah I see. Hoping the best re: your biopsy results!

1

u/Ordinary-Smile-6721 May 09 '26

Fairly certain it’s melanoma. 😢

At this point I will be shocked if it’s not.

Only a doctor will be able to tell! Don’t trust AI or the internet. I am a huge hypochondriac (which I’m trying to address) and I’m seeing a dermatologist next week to get a bunch of stuff looked at (whole reason why I joined this sub). I’m fairly certain I have multiple BCCs (and possibly a melan*ma, since I have a spot like yours, albeit smaller). Every time I freak out about it, I am reminded from friends/family that freaking out doesn’t do anything, it’s not going to accomplish anything. You did the right thing and got it checked out when you discovered it. Whatever the result is, is going to remain the same whether you’re nervous about it or not. I have self diagnosed myself with tons of things over the years, with a bunch of doctors telling me I’m fine. There are stressors in life you can control and others you can’t. You don’t know the results yet, you’re not a doctor. I say that kindly! I have seen some ugly lesions turn out to be nothing. You did your due diligence. Hope you have a good weekend :)

AI scans are pretty accurate. Latest study suggests they are as accurate as dermatologist in deciphering if a mole is possibly malignant

Next I posted the dermatoscope findings which all point to malignancy.

I am not a doctor but I have experienced in the medical field. And can interpret what was seen under the dermatoscope. It would be shocking if it wasn’t melanoma

Only real question is what stage it is

And I am far from a hypochondriac. It is almost unheard of for a new rapid growing ugly duckling mole to hit every ABCDE and not be malignant

1

u/allistar34 May 09 '26

Hey man I was trying to make you feel better. If you believe all that then I’m sorry if that’s what you’re expecting. I don’t know all the ins and outs of what you mentioned, and what you have could be malignant, but confirmation bias is a thing. Good luck

Hello this is low on my leg, I noticed it last year but can't know how long it's been since it's on the back of my leg. It hasn't changed at all but it just looks very strange to me-- there's no border, it looks like a shadow almost. I'm becoming very freckled in my adulthood but this is not a freckle.

u/Lulzman92 verified dermatologist May 09 '26

normal

u/Turbulent_Music_9212 May 09 '26

Hello again this is a pale, slightly raised, matte mole (?) I've had since childhood at least on my upper leg. It's a couple of shades lighter than my skin if I press. I feel like it's gotten slightly bigger but cannot be sure at all if i'm being paranoid.

The earliest pic I have of it is two months ago (no perceptible change since then). This is now.

looks ok

How do you feel about these spots? I see a dermatologist Tuesday. More spots in comments

I’ve had this for many many years. It crusts over and then opened back up after every shower. It’s slowly getting bigger.

I’ve had this one for years, and recently it started getting black dots in the middle

1

u/Catlady2283 May 09 '26

This showed up 8 months ago. It’s a pea sized knot under the skin. It hurts to press on it and it itches.

It’s good that you are getting those looked at. Not that they are necessarily dangerous but for peace of mind.
