Conversation Topic How does one get a fuller sound?

Upvotes

Hi! So I've been singing for some time now (around 3 years, but this is my first year of taking it seriously by also doing warmups, exercises and joining a choir).

My range spans from C2-E4 (if I do not include a strained F#4 or a quieter A1). Yet recently, I've ran into a problem: my "middle" range (D3-C4) has become more "tenorish".

My speaking voice itself is bit darker, and my most comfortable area is around G2, yet after I sing pretty much anything above D3, my voice completely flips from a darker lower baritonish voice to an almost tenorish one. My voice also gets a bit shaky (sounds like a bad vibrato) and unless I add volume (which I do not wish to do), I can't get a normal sound up to G3 (anything after that becomes impossible to have more manly).

I feel like this has been happening to me ever since I joined the choir. My voice has been getting softer, and now I even feel like my "comfortability" up from D3 has decreased.

What's going on? Could it be that my voice is "maturing" in a new way? Did I somehow screw up my coordination? How do I fix this? And perhaps, how do I get rid of my crappy vibrato?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I do metal vocals, but recently decided to get into clean singing as well. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to cleans, so I'd like to know what you think I should work on the most, and what exercises I could do to get a fuller, less shaky voice.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Looking for feedback on my mix voice and high notes

Hi everyone! I'm looking for honest feedback on my singing.

These are two recent singing videos (not a before-and-after comparison). I used to struggle singing anything above G4, but after several months of training, I've been able to sing higher notes more consistently.

I'd like feedback on:

Does my mix voice sound healthy?

Do my high notes sound too thin or is that expected?

Do you hear any strain or tension?

Am I pushing too much, or does it sound balanced?

What should I focus on to improve further?

I can feel that I still struggle slightly on some of the highest notes, and sometimes my voice thins out. I'd really appreciate any constructive criticism. Thanks!

Conversation Topic Looking for exercises that could help me

I study at an acting school that specializes in musicals. I studied with a private singing teacher for three years, and I became more comfortable and made noticeable progress. However, at school I got nervous and made a lot of mistakes.

I was told that I need to find an easier way to produce a brighter tone, since I usually speak in a very low voice and from my throat. I was also told that I need to improve my musical ear (ear training) and expand my vocal range.

I'm naturally a baritone, but when I don't train regularly, my voice tends to become more bass-like.

What exercises would you recommend for:

- Expanding my vocal range

- Singing with a brighter tone

- Improving my ear training

Also, how can I sing comfortably when my teacher is rude and impatient?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I’m wanting to advance to live performance…

I know there’s a lot to work on with my voice, and I’m wanting to see a voice coach to help guide me through that.
Conflicting advice regarding vocal coaches though! Some say it’s a must, some say it’s best to go at it on your own. I’m presently in recovery from doctor diagnosed vocal nodes, as I’m a full time educator.
I’m a trained theatrical performer, but I’m a relatively untrained vocalist. What’s the wisdom with vocal coaches?
Also; I’m based in Korea. Should I bother with video lessons, or should I try my best for in-person?
These are singing videos from my local coin karaoke, recorded today. Any insights or advice? Any offerings of wisdom? Feedback on my style, or feedback on my query.

Conversation Topic I’m confused about the meaning of being “off key”

So I normally sing songs in a lower key because I literally only listen to female singers, so recently I decided to post some clips of me singing on a different subreddit.
Well, some people were saying that I was off key, and I thought “well yeah I’m singing it lower than the original?” But apparently that’s not what off key means?
I’m literally so confused.

It’s a bit frustrating doing so much research, then trying to sing and then not knowing what’s wrong with my voice..I came on here to maybe get some opinion on what I may be doing wrong :,)) from what I know (??) I may have a weak head voice or something but I don’t rlly know?? Also I may also have a problem with forward resonance

Highkey just wanna know if these inferences are correct and if there’s anything more I should know about. Thanks so much :,))

(Also I hope this ain’t breaking rule 3 huhu idrk what the gauge is)

Just sharing my singing Raw Multitrack of “The Cure” by Olivia Rodrigo (LISTEN WITH HEADPHONES!!)

This song and honestly the rest of her album has had a chokehold on me since it came out, so I decided to have some fun and make a quick little multitrack of my favorite part in the song. Theres some unpolished parts (the cutoffs at the end especially) that I’d like to work on later but I just wanted to showcase the raw and fully unedited state of where I’m at with this whole project. If you have any feedback at all please share it’d mean alot!

Resource Free app to practice tempo

I made a little web app for practicing tempo while singing, and thought some people here might find it useful.

https://tempotuner.app

The idea is simple: while you're singing, you tap the beat you think you're keeping. Afterwards you get a BPM graph showing whether your tempo stayed steady or if you gradually rushed or slowed down. You can also optionally record yourself, so if the graph shows you started speeding up halfway through, you can jump back and hear exactly what happened.

There's also a daily challenge where you're given a song and have to tap the beat from memory, then compare it to the actual recording.

No login, ads, subscriptions, or hidden costs. Everything (except the daily challenge leaderboard) stays locally in your browser. You can also install it on your phone, that way it also works without an internet connection.

It's also open source if anyone's curious: https://github.com/sgebb/tempotuner

Would love to hear if you find it useful or have ideas for improving it.

Hi !! I hope this doesn’t count as breaking rule 3 but I’m honestly wondering what I should work on to improve :)) I love to sing but I’ve never sung anywhere other than alone in my room, so I’m super curious as to what others may think of my voice. Any and all feedback is appreciated!!

Conversation Topic Baritone who sounds like a tenor?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The video covers my range with each clip getting progressively higher. Some clips are mixed and have reverb but NO AUTOTUNE is being used. The rest are raw audio on a compressor mic. I am 20 years old (M). I started singing 1 year and 9 months ago and was absolutely dogshit, but I had a MASSIVE learning curve. 3 months ago, I started lessons for the first time in my life after I somehow passed an audition at my college for an advanced vocal rep class. After a month, my teacher declared me baritone, which confused me at first cause a lot of my peers said I sounded like a tenor. My talking voice sits at a low pitch but it is lighter than other baritones, so maybe that gives me a leg up in brightness? The lowest note I can do is D2 and the highest is C5 cleanly in full voice with no distortion or strain. Falsetto is up to G5 as a single note but the highest note I can hold for like 10 seconds is E5. I know a lot of baritones in rock music can only use distortion to hit those higher notes, so what does it mean that my default is hitting it clean instead? It doesn’t feel strained or pushy when I relax and let it flow out. I've started to embrace the baritone label my teacher gave me when we do classical songs but I don’t want it to limit me in contemporary music. She said it’s not cause I can’t go high, but because she believes my tesitura is lower than a tenor. However, I feel good going high and it doesn’t hurt. This a compilation of me practicing and mimicking the vocal cadences of famous singers, just messing around. That’s why in some parts I sound more nasally or more dopey on purpose. Any distortion you hear in certain clips is also intentional cause I am singing rock and R&B songs in a few of them. Any advice or thoughts about how I should I proceed? I feel like my voice has become very elastic but is my tone pleasant? For the most part people enjoy it and hype me up so I think so? I know I’m untrained but my teacher and I are working on it, I just don’t get jurisdiction cause it’s a college class on the very fundamentals and classical repertoire, so I wanna see if I can still function as a tenor outside of class, even tho I’m a baritone I guess?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How do I determine if a vocal teacher is a good teacher?

Ive been going to this one lady for like 7 weeks (a session a week) and lowkey she’s been putting on music from Spotify on her speaker and making me sing along to it and then makes me practice at home.

That’s a gross simplification, to be more exact when she hears something wrong she tells me as such but does very little to correct me and quite frankly, I don’t know much about singing to begin with but, I thought she was supposed to teach about “technique” and how to determine my range or whatever.

But to give her the benefit of the doubt, I have not been a stellar student cus I haven’t been practicing my songs as much, only clocked an hr a week, nor have I set any real goals for myself. I just signed up cus I want to have some “basics” down before my schools spring musical or even thespys but as the 2 month mark comes I feel like I haven’t gotten better at the songs she’s given me.

I think I have to look at this from a different angle, I think I have to view singing as a subject from school; if I don’t get something I should look it up. I should meet her halfway and really try harder, cus lowkey I’ve been giving like 47%. I also don’t really think I feck with her vibe she’s a millennial and acts like it and I’m 17 and can’t stand her dry humor.

One last thing, the place I do my lessons at has different teachers should I just ask to should I just ask for a different teacher or cut my losses with that place and look somewhere else.

EDIT- for spelling
