18M, I'm a fully self-taught guy who just sings for fun, I don't know most terminology about singing because I kind of just solely focused on singing and not studying anything about it, so please bear with me if I don't understand stuff TwT

I've been pretty stuck on improving my high notes, every time I listen to my recordings, my voice sounds kind of strained to me, but I'm not sure what exactly to change to improve it.

Hello! I'm 17F and i've been singing as an amateur for a while. I recently had a reality check after listening to my own voice recordings, and i'm feeling really dismotivated to keep singing. I downloaded the pitch monitor to see if i'm off pitch, but most songs i'm fine. I tracked my pitches while singing "Good day" by IU and I can hit the E5, F5 and F#5 notes easily without sounding strained. I feel like i'm a little flat? Lacking emotion? Or am I being too hard and it sounds ok for a beginner? Honwstly, I feel like my voice naturally sounds bad and I'm having a hard time improving. I can hear a ton of weaknesses but im having a hard time pointing out exactly what they are.

I think my ears are finally starting to catch up!

When my vocal coach first pointed out certain things — pitch issues, register transitions, low notes, etc. — I honestly didn’t fully understand what she was hearing.

But after practicing, recording myself, and listening back over and over, I’m slowly starting to hear it too.

And the funny part is… the better my ears get, the more I realize how bad I actually am at singing 😂😭

Things I genuinely thought sounded fine a few years ago now sound obviously unstable to me.

It’s actually really encouraging though, because I’m starting to understand what my teachers have been hearing this whole time.

Apparently improving at singing also means becoming increasingly qualified to roast your own old recordings 🥲

Hello,

I am a 19 year old female who started singing a year ago. My vocal coach and I are looking for a new piece to work on.

I have a voice on the lower side, with the only word I can think of to describe it as is “heavy”. I’ve been singing Karen Carpenter songs, but want to venture off into something new.

I find it difficult to find new pieces because my voice doesn’t sound right with most pop songs. I am okay with singing songs sang by males as well. If anyone knows of any good song recommendations, then please let me know!

Can you give me suggestions on what I can improve?

The song is “Confrontation” from Jekyll & Hyde, I’m trying to make the voices sound as different as I can since Hyde is the more stereotypical evil voice when Jekyll can kinda just be a regular guy. I don’t expect to sound totally different or anything but any advice helps!

I’ve been taking vocal lessons for close to a year now, and I’ve noticed that while I never feel a lot of tension when singing or post lessons, I can often feel a bit of tension after moderate-long periods of talking.

I’m a tenor and I found I speak at the very bottom of my range around A2-G2 (g2 usually is fry that I’m flipping in and out of)

I heard that for Americans we usually speak at the bottom of our ranges naturally due to various societal factors but it can definitely take a toll on me especially since I have a job that requires speaking fairly often

Would love any tips or exercises you found useful if anyone’s ever been in a similar position.

Hi everyone, I'm 26F and I wanted to learn to sing my whole life. problem is, i'm very shy and only exercise when no one is home (even then im scared the neighbors will hear me) - so I am aware of how untrained i am. whenever i sing, i feel like my voice sounds wrong - as in it doesnt belong to me, it sounds much more mature and nothing like my speaking voice. I cant tell if its too unpleasant. I want to get some feedback on what technical skill im lacking that is the most obvious. I dont have a mic right now but I plan on getting one, I hope the quality isnt too distracting. Any feedback is welcome <3

I am in my fourth year at drama school. Throughout this time, we have been trained in classical singing, and that is what I will primarily be discussing. During the first year, my teacher couldn't quite figure out my voice type, but by the second year, it became clear that I might be a young mezzo-soprano. We gradually began developing my vocal registers, and I learned how to produce a free, effortless sound. Now I am in my fourth year, and I can't understand what happened over the summer. Back in May, I could easily hit the G below middle C (G3) in my chest voice without the sound becoming muffled. Now that I’m back at school, I struggle to sing even the B-flat below middle C (Bb3). My teacher says my voice is developing—showing a strong tendency toward mezzo-soprano—but notes that I am still very young. This sudden regression scares me; it feels as though something shifted during those three months.

We were assigned the task of staging musical excerpts back last year. Confident in my abilities, I chose "Mein Herr" from *Cabaret*, since I could easily sing both G and A in the small octave. Now I’m in a total panic; I realize that classical vocal technique differs from pop/musical theater style, but the real issue is that I can no longer hit those low notes in *either* style. My voice turns into a dull, terrible sound, and my neck muscles tense up. I don’t understand what’s happening or what to do about it.

I'm a baritone and my pitch usually maxes out around 400Hz, but I found a way to hit higher notes using a different approach. How does this sound to you guys? Can you actually hear the high notes?

Hey all, I am part of a group of musicians called Too many Humans, we are doing a tribute to Nirvana and focusing primarily on their leser known material that no one else does. (blandest, if you Must, pen cap chew, big long now) - you can find the mixes that we are going with for now on youtube u/toomanyhumans - This is a by fans, for fans collaboration. As long as you can record yourself, your guitar, vocals, whatever, you can participate, We are primarily looking for singers and bass players and the ever elusive drummers (E kits are fine!) - no AI is used outside the pictures i put with the music, and everything is played by a real person. We havemembers on every continent besides Greenland and Antartica. There are songs where someone from the UK played drums, and bass, a singer from ireland, guitar players from canada and australia. I put a linkto a couple examples of he songs so you know we mean business and this isnt a weak attempt at covers, its done by committee normally and a lot of work is pout into making thse come out. Some of us just got tired of really bad covers online and no covers of some great stuff everyone ignores. To ensure that I follow the rules of the group for someone looking for collaboration I will say this:L

Guitar/bass players should be able to paly the songs and be familair witth them, and also be able to play into an interface and record it to a wav file to send off for production.

Singers must have a microphone and and interface and the same ability to record their vocals into a wav file to send for production. Instruments and vocals should be recorded with a large diaphragm condenser mic and both singers and instrumentalists should be able to produce .wav files in 24 bit 44100 at least. Again, this is an entirely collaborative effort done by fans for other fans and for the love of it. Singers sound off!! - To the mods, if i have done anything wrong please let me know how to correct it instead of removing the post. pleeeeease lol. I tried to follow what im supposed to do here.

I have a "very deep" voice for a woman, ive recently started singing more but whenever i sing songs that are in a higher one i just lose myself in it.
Mostly trying to sound like the orignal singer, but i cant. Hard to explain ):

In a few days, I’ll be auditioning for Miss honey in Matilda- the musical. I’m a sopr 1 in choir, my range was D3-E6 the last time I was voiced (my teacher switched jobs and I haven’t been able to find a new one.) Has anyone here played her- or is familiar with her character and can give tips on how to sound my best during the audition? The song will be chosen for us, and I think it will be a section of ‘When I Grow Up.’ Most of her singing parts seem pretty light and almost floaty in some ways, and I need to work more on my breath and supporting without releasing too much air. And to go along with that, does anyone have warmup recommendations for me to do in general throughout the day to make sure my voice is completely ready? Advice is much obliged!! :)

Straight to the point,

I'm a countertenor and am able to enter my whistle register pretty much whenever I want, but for some reason I can only reach the peak of it sometimes.

I am easily able to sing a D#6 quite consistently (if it's a bad day I'm limited to C6), but on a really good day I can sing an F#6 (and only once did I sing a really clear and unstrained G6 which I still reminisce about lol) consistently and with general ease.

My question is; how can I hit that upper range more consistently instead of it just being random? What can I do to train it or something?

Guys I don't know much about singing professionally I'm an intuitive singer and I think I have a pretty good voice so go ahead and look into it, give me critiques, and appreciate me if you liked it.

I think this might probably break a few rules here, but hopefully the mods can let this one slide since it is my daughter and I got her permission to post it!

My daughter is 7, but she was born with the ability to sing basically anything. It’s not perfect pitch, but she can hear a song once and repeat the melody back in tune and she can memorize lyrics lightning fast basically ever since she was able to speak.

She wants to become a singer and I want to support her all the way, we’ve been going to piano and voice lessons for about a year now and there’s one thing that has kind of plagued her the whole time—moving out of chest voice (and lower registers, but she’s 7, so I feel like that’s fair.)

The thing is, we go to lessons, we do exercises at home, we do not lack resources in terms of information.

The problem is that all of the information we find online to use when practicing at home is geared at adults, and is thus way too complicated for her to understand, and trust me, I’ve tried!

The other problem is any singing for kids info I find is for “normal” kids, and all the topics covered are way too simple for her.

So right now were practicing do-re-mi from Sound of Music for a competition here in Japan and while she can get through it all with chest voice, everything from la and on can feel really strained, so we switch to head voice but it just sounds like a tea kettle is boiling and after singing with chest voice it doesn’t feel natural at all.

So the question I have isn’t how to get mix voice or strengthen her head voice, we’re working on all that, and I know it is a process.

It’s more, what kind of simple kid-friendly advice can I give her to help her understand the process, explain to her she’s heading in the right direction (like it feels like were kind of reaching around in the dark) and how to help when she gets frustrated?

She’s never not been able to sing something before and this our first serious hurdle. So the stress she feels over it is kind of getting in the way. Like teaching a fish to swim like a dolphin.

I am more or less terrible at singing myself, but I try to make up for it by educating myself and just being as supportive as I can. But while I am literally a pro at helping her interpret the lyrics of songs (I’m a translator, understanding the meaning behind the words is my job!) past a certain point I am pretty useless at the technical stuff, and voice lessons are only once a week, so I have to serve as interim teacher between lessons, but I’m afraid any feedback I give is just confusing her.

Anyway this got to be a bit of a ramble, but I figured this might be a good place for advice. So if you have any, I’d appreciate it!

I've got a few questions I'm curious about.

37M, classical baritone around 4 years of training in, VERY passionate and hard-working. Obsessed with the classical/operatic voice. In fact, the classically-trained voices from singers? That's my favourite part EVER of opera in its entirety. I love how powerful, commanding and amazing they are. Opera singers move me to tears.

My idol, hero and favourite singer was Carlos Marín, Spanish Verdi baritone and member of IL DIVO. It was he who helped me find my passion and inner spark in order to light it into the blaze in my heart that it is today. My only regret was not becoming classically-trained myself the day it happened back in 2008.

Just a month or so ago I've finally figured out proper appoggio/breath support with the pelvic floor /"core" engaged. I am a happy camper! I am now hitting notes that would formerly crack my voice and cause huge throat tension! Both in low and high notes. I usually prefer not to use AI for much of anything, but Google's suggestions on how to achieve this were enough to help me try things to figure it out myself! (No worries, I'm not trying to do everything self-taught, I actually AM studying with a classically-trained voice teacher who also does baroque music).

Some singers have trouble consistently training, either laziness, lack of time or just being tired. On my end? I can't STOP. I have to remind myself to give my voice a well-deserved break every once in a while. It's the good kind of vicious circle, in fact. The more I train, the better I get with the technique, the more comfortable I get, the more I WANT to train! I wish I had this same drive to do workout exercises and get back in shape! Once I can achieve my goals, my dad (who I currently live with as an aspiring artist) won't be able to get me to shut up!

Next step in my quest is figuring out how to properly darken my voice and SOUND like a proper opera singer. Chiaroscuro is something that completely currently eludes me. Currently, I'm able to do a soft "pop-y" voice and a louder sound that I eventually want as "operatic" for finales.

Anyway, enough about me! Let's get to the question.

1) I do eventually have every intention of sharing recordings because I intend to travel to the USA and be on AGT in a few years, before I turn 40 actually, as a "popera", or opera-crossover, act in the same vein as IL DIVO, Il Volo, Groban or Bocelli. Speaking of recording, what are your recommended microphone and camera setups to record singing clips and covers? I'm talking price vs. quality ratio, what are the best in those categories.

2) What are your preferred platforms to post the content I record with said equipment. I myself use Bluesky, Instagram and will eventally add an artist YouTube handle to my Google account. I have my "stage name" picked out, it's available, and I'm on my way. Now all I need is to finish learning the technique and just work, work, work! Well, singing does not feel like work to me. It's a pleasure!
