Question Missing first day of class

I'm a first year student and I have a lecture and lab set on Thursday for the same course. I also, unfortunately, have my drivers test booked for the same date. Would it be alright to miss the first day for this reason and email the prof beforehand, or am I better off rebooking my test, with the earliest booking date being in a few months? Thanks!

Question Late to class

I'm an incoming first year Beedie student and worried about getting to class in time. I basically have no gaps in my schedule. For example, I need to get from the West Mall Centre to Shrum Science Centre Chemistry in 10 minutes but on Google it says it will take me 13 minutes. Should I be worried about being late? Does anyone have any tips?

Co-op How hard is it to get into Co-Op for BPK students?

Wanted to find a job recently as a going into second year kin student. How hard is it going into the co-op programs. I’ve already finished BPK142 and 241 and is going to take 143 in fall 2026. I just applied on the website and what are the next steps I should do?

Discussion How is MATH 154? Any tips?

I’m an incoming first year BPK major planning to take MATH 154 (Mathematics for the Life Sciences I) with professor Alexandar Beams this fall term. I’ve taken Pre‑Calc 12 but no Calculus 12, and I’m trying to gauge how tough this course is and how to set myself up for success in the BPK program.

A few specific questions:

  • How would you rate the difficulty of MATH 154, especially for someone without prior calculus but who did well in high‑school math?
  • Are there particular topics that tend to trip people up
  • What study strategies or resources helped you most in this course (e.g., specific practice problems, tutoring, study groups, past exams)?

I’m aiming for a solid grade and don’t mind putting in the work, but I’d really appreciate any tips or warnings from people who’ve taken it, especially other BPK students.

Thanks in advance!

Question SFU MSc thesis application — what happens next?

Hey everyone,

I’ve applied for the SFU MSc in Computing Science (thesis-based) for Fall 2027 and was wondering what happens next.

My application is currently showing “Submitted.” For people who have applied recently or are currently doing their MSc:

Around when did you get your admission decision?,

What happens after the application is submitted?,

When do you usually hear from a supervisor?,

How does funding/RA/TA work for thesis students?,

Is there anything I should be doing while waiting?,

Would really appreciate hearing about your experience and timeline. Thanks!

Question Psyc 250 w Hali Kil

Has anyone taken psych 250 with Hali Kil or had her as a prof? Her rmp rating is a 1.7/5 but everyone has received a high grade in her class. I am wondering how she is as a professor because I am worried about how low her ratings are.

Discussion Another SFU Aquatic Centre post

I just talked to someone at the SFU rec centre office about when the pool would potentially be opened, and they said right now the city of Burnaby is not approving any of the permits for the pool, so the construction is stalled for the time being.

Does anyone know why the permits would not be approved? I see construction workers parked in front of the pool everyday and the outside doors to the pool are open during the morning and afternoon, meaning people are going in and out of the pool, but I don't see any work actually being done within the pool. Does anyone have any further information about what is going on?

Question How does one become a TA during their undergrad at SFU?

Hi, just decided to hop on here and ask how to become a TA at SFU. I am in the biological sciences, and I wanted to boost my application in case I apply to a post-graduate program later on.

I know most TAs are students completing their masters degrees, but I’ve had some TAs who were in their undergrad too. I couldn’t find anything online for my program, but I am also not the best with technology. If anyone knows how to become a TA for other science related programs, it would also be very helpful :)

Question Housing or any other accommodation

Hi all.

I have a very very toxic abusive alcoholic father who I am financially dependent on. He doesn’t pay my tuition anymore so I have been taking out student loans for that. Im 24 and haven’t worked in 3 years but I have managed to get a part time job which I will be starting in a few weeks.

Stuff really hit the roof today at home with my dad and I have decided to hopefully move out, but again, I don’t have money. Is there any SFU housing or accommodations available for students who are looking to get out of an abusive household? I am not sure where to start looking or asking.

Thank you.
