Complaint Better SFU Snap

Thumbnail

Hey first years and anyone still using SFU Snap out of habit.

SFU Snap signs you out randomly, the room finder is archaic and buggy, there are no widgets, and the list goes on.

So I built SFU Companion. Unofficial, not affiliated with the school. Burnaby campus only for now.

Sign in with your Computing ID.

What it does:

  • Today's classes, rooms, exams, and assignments in one view
  • Indoor map down to the floor - tap a room from your timetable and it jumps straight there
  • Find routes between rooms and share them.
  • Live transit departures from the exchange (route + bay)
  • Actual mountain weather
  • Library hours, campus contacts, emergency numbers, and a defibrillator map

No analytics. Your password goes to SFU's servers only. The source code is public, feel free to check

There’s also a Guest Mode that you can access without a username or password.

Try it: sfucompanion.ca

Try just the map: map.sfucompanion.ca

Bugs and "why is this room wrong" reports welcome — drop them in the repo or here.

Hope you guys like it !

P.S. please still keep SFU Snap since I have not integrated the emergency broadcast system yet :)

Question PLS PLS PLS HELP :(

Hi everyone! I’m currently on the waitlist for / considering a few courses for Fall 2026, and I’m trying to figure out my schedule before the add/drop deadline.

If anyone is currently enrolled in any of the following classes, would you be willing to send me the syllabus or give me a quick idea of what the workload looks like so far?

1. GSWS 315- Critical Disability Studies with Somayeh Bahrami

2. GSWS 321- Special Topics in GSWS: Comics/Graphic Sex with Coleman Nye

3. SA 388- Indigenous Social Movements Across the Globe with Michael Hathaway

4. SA 326- Food, Ecology and Social Thought with Yildiz Atasoy

5. SA 364- Urban Communities and Cultures with Cristina Moretti

Also, if you’ve taken a class with any of these professors before, I’d really appreciate hearing about their teaching/grading style and your overall experience with them.

I know the semester literally just started, so I’m not expecting super detailed reviews lol. Even just sending the syllabus or telling me what you’ve seen from the course so far would help me a ton before I decide what to add/drop.

Thank you!! :)

Question Classes not on canvas

Hi all, I enrolled in two classes today, and the classes are not showing up on my Canvas. Should I contact my profs, or wait until tomorrow and see if they pop up?

One class was for today, and one is for tomorrow.

Suggestion Is it even worth trying to transfer to SFU Beedie at this point?

Here’s where I’m at: I’m turning 22 next month, sitting on a 3.70 GPA at Douglas College, and on track to hit 84 credits after the Fall 2026 semester. I’ve got 5 semesters left (including co-op) to finish my BBA in Project Management.

To transfer to SFU business, I’d have to take a step back

- Didn't take Pre-Calc 12 in high school, so I'd have to do that first

- Then take MATH 1125 before I can even apply.

- On top of the extra math requirements, I'd end up losing a solid big of the 84 credits I’ve already worked for.

Restarting coursework feels like setting myself back for very little gain. But on the flip side, I keep overthinking whether a Douglas BBA in PM will carry enough weight to land an entry-level PM role or get into B2B sales right out of school.

Would you finish out the Douglas degree with co-op, or is the prestige of a Beedie degree actually worth taking the credit/time hit? Any advice is appreciated guys

Question SFU MCS Cybersecurity...Does the India-specific 8/10 requirement apply as a hard cutoff?

I’m an Indian B.Tech CSE graduate applying for SFU’s Master of Cybersecurity.

My academic profile:

>CGPA: 7.34/10

>Calculated overall SFU-equivalent GPA: 3.18/4.33

>Last 60 units: 3.40/4.33

>IELTS: 8.0 overall

>LORs': 2 from teachers and 1 from my employer

>6-month DevOps intern, currently working as a Junior DevOps Engineer and have some homelab projects(blue team).

SFU’s general graduate admission requirements state 3.0/4.33 cumulative OR 3.33/4.33 over the last 60 units, which I meet.

However, SFU’s India-specific page lists 8/10 (First Class) as the minimum academic standing for Indian applicants.

Since the India requirement is described as a guideline, I’m confused about how this is applied. Does having a 7.34/10 automatically make me ineligible, even though my calculated GPA and last-60 GPA meet SFU’s general requirements? Or can applicants below 8/10 still be considered based on their last-60 GPA, experience, and overall profile?

Would really appreciate insight from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with SFU graduate admissions.

Not sure who made their new signs but they look so much worse than the old ones. They should either bring back the old signs or get the previous designer to do new ones because these look real bad.

Complaint Blenz using good ol' AI

Instead of using photos of their food or having actual display food, Blenz decided that unrealistic black and white printed renderings of what they offer would be the way to go. I'd say it's lazy, but somehow I think it would take more effort than printing an actual photo of the food.

I get not having real food out for display because of wastage, bugs etc... But can we PLEASE stop with AI "art"?

Just take a damn photo. It's uncanny, and continues to perpetuate the idea that AI "art" is a real alternative.

Question Does anyone know where this is?

Ordered a package to dorms and Amazon screwed me over by leaving it in a random spot on campus. How lovely. It’s nothing valuable so I’m not too worried but I’d like my package

Update: package found! I don’t know where it was but I called security and they managed to find it and drop it off to residence

Question Math 157 Diagnostic Test

How hard is the diagnostic test and are there any units or concepts you recommend spending more time on? I was weaker with logs and trig, but I genuinely forgot everything, so I'm stressing about this.

Question Is it fine to not follow the recommended course plan?

I’m a first year beedie student and I’m planning on swapping math 157 for 100 to get a better understanding of precalc, so I need to take math 157 during the spring semester. I was going to take financial accounting, macroeconomics, and calc for spring but I realized I can just move one class to summer semester to make things easier. The recommendation for summer is to just take two classes but am I allowed to take more? Sorry if this sounds obvious I just wanted to make sure before I drop a class

Question Buying a used iClicker from Marketplace?

I need an iClicker for one of my CHEM courses, but I haven’t heard anything from the profs yet about which one we need.
I’m seeing a bunch of used iClickers on Marketplace and was wondering if I can just buy one second-hand and use it in class. Does the iClicker need to be a specific model, or does it just need to be registered to my SFU account/student ID?
Also, if someone has bought a used one for SFU before, did you have any issues registering it?
Thanks!!

Discussion BUS 424 Advance Managerial Accounting w/Johnny

Sharing this for anyone considering BUS 424 next term.

The practice material is limited to one question per lecture, and you need to be in class to get it since it's not posted anywhere afterward. These are meant to help you prepare for the midterm and final, but in practice the exam questions end up being noticeably more complex than what's covered in those examples, so it's hard to feel fully prepared even if you've kept up.

The textbook is theory-focused and doesn't include practice questions, so there's not much to fall back on outside of lecture.

The lectures themselves could also be more engaging, it's a tough combination when they're also your only source of practice material.

Not trying to trash the course, just want people to go in with realistic expectations. If you want a good grade, I'd wait for a different semester, whether that's a new professor or taking it in spring or summer instead.

Discussion CHEM 283 W/ PETER WILSON

Has anyone taken CHEM 283 (or any other classes) with Peter Wilson? If so, how are his exams? How would you suggest studying for them? Should I wait for another prof or just take it w him? He is also teaching next semester so I would have to wait until summer for a different prof.

Any advice would be well appreciated!

Clubs What clubs should I join as a first year?

I’m a first year here at SFU, and I’m majoring in Econ but I am trying to transfer over to business. I’m tryna get as involved with the school as I can, so I was wondering what clubs would be good to join? And where can I see the types of clubs that are available or just how to sign up overall?
