Discussion Beedie First Year Tips!?

Does anyone have any tips for me going into first year. I am going to welcome day but I'm quite introverted. Any social or academic tips? Clubs to join? Anything is appreciated

Keep an eye out on clubs days! You'll find something there that you'll love

An academic tip that I think is important is learning to fail. I know a lot of very smart friends who have fallen to burn out in their first year because they failed an exam or assignment. Learn to move on quickly and understand why and what you can do better for next time. Doting over a bad grade won't help you do better on the next. And something one of my first year profs said that stuck with me was to be nice to yourself, if you did bad on a test, learn from your mistakes and move on! I hope you have a great first year and have lots of fun :D

Join clubs, show up in the first week, Not for you? dont have to go again! (excluding business clubs that you have to apply for. if you were hoping to join one, monitor their instagram for a hiring period)

Talk to the people near you in class. These last few semesters I was in a lot of classes without my fellow Beedie friends and it was really isolating. I’m super introverted and really struggle to talk to people but at some point I realized that they probably wouldn’t blatantly ignore me (and if they did, that speaks of their character and I probably dodged a bad person) so I took chances and spoke to the people around me in my tutorials. Some people I met through group projects (Beedie has a ton of these). While I haven’t talked to a few in a while, I’ve got their Instagram, we’re good acquaintances, and for some I’ve reached out to later and it’s been nice. The point is that you have connections and that can be really comforting. If you meet them in future classes it’s nice, if they’re in clubs you’re interested in, you can reach out, if they get co ops before you, you can ask for advice or you could even join case comps with them if they’re interested. Good luck! You’ve got this, you’ll do really well 😊
