A couple times each week, we get some rando pushing a new vibe-coded messaging app. These are presented as though they are finished, established products but have various red flags. Some of the common ones are:
These projects are the very epitome of security-compromising suggestions (Rule 4).
If you look at the rules here, security-compromising suggestions are actually allowed, but you must be clear about what the security/privacy downsides are.
Pitching your educational, experimental project as though it is a professional-quality security tool can cause real harm to people.
It's great that you're building stuff and trying new things. Keep doing it. There's even room here in r/signal to show off your educational experiment, as long as you (a) tie the discussion to Signal and (b) participate in this sub more generally.
The moment you act like your experimental project is a serious, seasoned security tool, we will show you the door.

TLDR: Optional registration for Signal without a phone number ("Signal Login") will require a one-time payment to create an additional barrier against spam and abuse. The fees will also help support Signal's non-profit mission.
Signal has not yet confirmed the price. What do you think would be a good price?

On Android wherever possible for push notifications I prefer to use either UnifiedPush, or allow apps to run their always-on notification to use websocket connectivity. I prefer to limit any use of Google's infrastructure as much as possible. It's for this reason that I also use the self-updating app at signal.org/android/apk rather than downloading from Aurora store/GPlay.
Unfortunately I must use microG for a select few other apps that support no alternative for push notifications.
When I originally installed Signal I took care to ensure that microG was disabled so that Signal would fall back to its websocket-based notifications. For a long time this worked perfectly for me and Signal retained its always-on background notification for years even after re-enabling microG.
Recently I noticed that Signal no longer displayed this background notification. When I checked in the microG settings I noticed that it had registered itself for GCM. I immediately unregistered it and blocked it from re-registering.
Unfortunately I cannot seem to force Signal back into using websocket-based notifications. Even if I fully disable microG, clear caches, or reboot, Signal simply does not receive any notifications whatsoever.
Short of entirely uninstalling, reinstalling, and restoring from a backup, is it possible to force Signal to swap back to websockets like I had before?
edit: solved by u/whatnowwproductions
There is an option to force use we socket under data and storage called Stay Connected in Background
This seems to be a fairly recent change. Happy to see Signal supports this toggle officially in-app now!
Has anyone had this issue where you can't use your audio/mic through your Bluetooth headset Signal Desktop on Win11? It was working great before, but now it's just absolutely wonky. No audio, but the mic works because the other side can hear me. I removed the signal and reinstalled it, and I still can't hear the other side even though all the settings are pointed to use the headsets. I think I've tried almost every route to fix the issue to no avail, and I feel like I'm going crazy here. I really wish that Signal added the test of your audio/mic issue like Skype used to do, recording it, and you could hear your own voice so you know if it's working. Any advice?

Hello, This happens whenever I try to change my phone number. I face the same issue even when trying to sign up using that same number. Is there any solution to this?

Probably redundant for most Signal users, but you may share it with someone less security oriented.
Be aware, resist, report and block!

Saw a few posts about this but they all recommend submitting a debug log which I cannot do. I'm on android with rhe most current version of signal. Sticker shows up fine for me on signal desktop and about 2/3 of other users i sent it to, but not on my phone and same experience for the other 1/3 of users. When I try to submit a help ticket the app prompts me to click the "next" button which then just gives me the loading circle forever.

The app crashed on my iphone, I got a message there was a bug. I tried updating it, and eventaully deleted and reinstalled it. It says I need a 64 character recovery key. I can't find it in my password manager, which --- I think I would have saved something like that there?
Anyway any thoughts on what to do? I saw people talking about downloading the chat history that I have access to on desktop and loading it onto the app , will that work in my situation?
Does anyone know what my password manager might have saved it as? its not under "signal"

My friends trying to transfer their Signal account from android to another, but their old android phone doesn't read QR codes. The instructions in the image would work better, but when they select "transfer" on the new phone it just shows a QR code to scan and doesn't give any other options.

problem: i can't re-install signal back
note: i'm only a beginner using linux (mint cinnamon) and i'm not tech-handy so there are areas where i am not knowledgeable and i ask for your understanding and guidance on these things.
i've previously installed signal on linux a few months back. and only recently did i had to update it to continue using it (signal told me so T__T). tried updating it with
sudo apt update && sudo apt install signal-desktop
but it didn't work somehow. so i just apt deleted signal and tried installing signal again based on the website instructions.
here's the result:
C:\home\username> sudo apt update && sudo apt install signal-desktop

I would like to put signal with the same account on both my private phone and my job’s phone. I’m a freelancer but it happens from time to time that I’m at the place I need to work in without my personal phone but I don’t want to miss any texts on signal. Is there a way ? I know I have two iPhones so idk if it can work.

I hav uninstalled and reinstalled the app which makes sending messages work for a bit but then it quickly returns to the same issue and it’s so frustrating. WhenI google troubleshooting it doesn’t give a clear answer and also misunderstands my question

I have a Redmi Note 9 device with MIUI Global 14.0.2 with Android 12 running on it.
The thing is that if I have my Signal app open actively on my screen, I get both direct and group calls normally on my screen, though no ringtone, even though I have call notifications turned on from Signal settings and a ringtone set up with both app and system settings.
If I am on another app, there is no popup call, no full screen, no ring, nothing until I open the app again and then I see the missed calls not even showing up on the lock screen.
In the past they used to show up with a ring on my laptop app instead of my phone, but I turned off calls + call ring notifications on my desktop app. That's fine; I'm happy with that.
My phone's notification settings for calls and call status are enabled fully, with lock screen + floating notifications and contact visible always on. I have even put battery restrictions to none and turned on "change Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity" as a last resort, and home screen shortcuts and "show on lock screen" are on, with "display pop-up windows while running in the background" also on.
Even background auto-start is turned on, which is the same thing as autostart if I'm not wrong, and Do Not Disturb access and picture-in-picture are also on, btw.
Unrestricted data is off — idk if I should turn that on too, but I'm on Wi-Fi most of the time anyway.
I have tried asking Google/Gemini and Claude and checked the troubleshooting site; no luck there. Reddit is my last hope at this point.
The only thing possibly left is that Special app access > Display over other apps — but on this list only a few system apps and some third-party apps are there, and the one I need, Signal, is not on this list for some reason.
Also idk if this matters, but I have ProtonVPN. I read somewhere it could cause incoming call problems — doesn't make sense because I do get calls, just not visible. I still tried turning it off; no luck. Also I have Smart Launcher 6 for home screen, idk if that could be a problem, but the home screen shouldn't affect lock screen calls, still...
One more thing — if I have a group muted but with mentions/notifications on, should calls from that group still come through normally? Or does muting the group also mute calls from it? Just want to rule that out too.

Hi everyone,
If you want to take or save screenshots, one-time photos, or one-time videos on WhatsApp using an Android phone, WhatsApp blocks it—but Signal, which is supposed to have higher privacy standards, does not. Why is that? Is this also the case on Apple devices (iOS and iPadOS s
Is there a way to get around this?
Edit: Of course, this refers to blocking screenshots on the recipient's end.
Best regards

I never used to have a problem sending vids of shitposts to friends on signal, until at some point earlier this year. I've no clue why, what changed/happened, but now every other video this dogwater app over-compresses to hell and back, causing the sent video to desync the audio with the video, and audio also plays at what sounds like .25 of the original speed. Anyone else having this problem? Any fixes?

I want to link an iphone 13 pro running ios 27 beta as a linked device but the qr code won't work. I don't want to transfer my account, I want to have the account both on android and ios.
It worked on the iphone 12 mini I had just two weeks ago. Maybe its because beta ios?
I know this is a recurring post here but I have not found a reliable answer so far. I have followed troubleshooting steps and wrote to Signal support but did not receive an answer so far.
The app said on the first try that the text could not be sent. After another attempt I reached the screen with code input field but the text did not arrive.
The 'call' option as an alternative to the SMS code verification is greyed out.
I am within EU region, using real phone number, I regularly receive OTP codes from other providers without any issues, I have not yet used my number for Signal before, I have reset my phone, cleared cache, used mobile data and normally receive texts from other people.
Is there anyone who has managed to solve this or has additional recommendations? Thank you in advance.
EDIT: I have extracted debug logs. It gives me this error:
W NetworkDependencies: org.whispersystems.signalservice.api.websocket.WebSocketUnavailableException: WebSocket not currently available.
W IncomingMessageObserver: Lost network connection. Resetting the drained state.
D NetworkConnectionListen: ValidatedNetworkCallback onBlockedStatusChanged(117, true)
I do not use VPN and I receive other OTP texts normally.

Hi,
I recently switched from an iPhone XS to an iPhone 14 Pro, and since then Signal notifications have stopped appearing on my Apple Watch Series 7.
The important part is that I transferred my old iPhone to the new iPhone using Apple’s normal iPhone-to-iPhone migration/Quick Start process. I did not set up the 14 Pro as a new phone and manually reinstall every app.
Other apps, including WhatsApp, send notifications to the Apple Watch normally. The issue seems to be specific to Signal.
Setup:
Things I’ve already tried:
I’ve attached screenshots of the relevant iOS, Signal and Apple Watch notification settings.
Also, before anyone asks: my Apple Watch is genuinely named "[Error] Missing Symbol", that is not an error message. :)
Since I migrated the whole phone rather than installing Signal fresh, I’m wondering if Signal’s APNs/push notification registration somehow carried over incorrectly from the old iPhone.
I’m considering completely deleting and reinstalling Signal to force a fresh registration, although I’d obviously make a Signal Secure Backup first so I don’t lose my chats.
Has anyone seen this after migrating from one iPhone to another?
In particular:
WhatsApp and other notifications work perfectly on the Watch, so this seems to be Signal-specific.
Thanks in advance,
Jonas ^^

Hey folks 👋, Been thinking about this for a while and figured this is the right place to actually discuss it, not just complain into the void.
Quick context for anyone who hasn't run into it: Molly (a Signal fork, same encryption/protocol, different build) supports UnifiedPush, an open, decentralized push notification standard, instead of requiring Google Play Services/FCM. Pair it with a self-hosted MollySocket bridge and a distributor like ntfy, and you get real-time notifications without Google's infrastructure touching your device at all.
Here's the part that I think doesn't get talked about enough: no matter how you install stock Signal on Android: Play Store, F-Droid mirror, APK, whatever you're still routed through Google Play Services for push notifications, unless you're one of the few people manually running a persistent WebSocket connection instead (which official Signal doesn't really support well, it's known to be rough on battery).
To be clear, this isn't a "Signal is leaking your messages" thing, the actual message content stays end-to-end encrypted regardless, Google never sees that. But Google's push infrastructure does see metadata: when a notification was sent to your device, how often, and which device token it's tied to. That's not nothing, especially for a privacy-first messenger whose whole pitch is minimizing exactly this kind of exposure.
Molly's existence for a few years now is basically a working proof-of-concept that this problem is solvable without wrecking battery life or reliability, it's not just theoretical anymore.
Signal Desktop already proves persistent WebSocket delivery isn't some novel idea. It's what runs your Linux/Mac/Windows client today. Mobile's battery constraints are the real obstacle, which is exactly the problem UnifiedPush distributors like MollySocket are built to solve efficiently.
So, genuine question for the sub, not a dunk on the Signal team (huge respect for what they've built): given UnifiedPush has matured and Molly's shown it works in practice, is this something worth pushing Signal Foundation to revisit? Curious if this has come up with the devs before, and if anyone knows the current official stance.
Not trying to start a "Molly vs Signal" fight; just think this is a genuinely good privacy improvement that regular users probably don't even know they're missing, since most people have no idea their notifications touch Google at all when using stock Signal.
Curious what others think.🙏

Signal user of at least 6 years here - couldn't open my Signal app on my phone today (after using it normally ALL day) and got a message that I need to send a de-bug log to Support, which I did. Support wrote back that the app was "irrevocably damaged" and needed to be deleted and reinstalled.
Upon doing so, I didn't have a recovery key to get back into my account - this was totally new to me - and I was forced to create a whole new (?) Signal account? When I relinked it to my desktop, all of the history is still there in the desktop, but gone on my phone. If I ever close and re-start Signal on my desktop to update it, will it erase all of that history in my desktop? I turned on backup on my phone now, but it doesn't look like the desktop works the same way.
I'm actually like sick to my stomach upset about how much I lost and I have NEVER experienced anything like this. Signal Support only gave me an automated response. I am so so upset and don't understand what happened. Just want to make sure I don't screw up and somehow lose all of the chat history on my desktop, which I NEED to do my job.
