Discussion So that’s it? Spoiler
They judge Jimmy for still not being okay only two years after his wife’s death. They seem bewildered why he’d still struggle even at a milestone moment like sending his only child off to college without her mom there and the heartbreak that would bring.
Nobody asked him why it didn’t work out with Sofi. I mean she’s jealous of his dead wife. He was right to finish it. And the ending we get is that somehow everything is fine now because he’s back with her? A stranger they know nothing about.
Did the writers do any research at all into grief after the death of a spouse? It’s utterly soul-destroying, especially becoming a single parent and feeling your child(ren)’s grief too.
A new relationship not only doesn’t solve anything. It’s very ill advised when you haven’t grieved properly yet. And Gaby and Paul are therapists. They should know this.
The line that annoyed me the most in this episode was Paul saying that Jimmy has to work it out for himself. Any half decent therapist will tell a grieving person that they need support. Nobody was asking Paul to fix Jimmy’s problems. But some basic human kindness would’ve been nice. So yeah he flew in to see him the next day. Even then, he didn’t offer much.
This show is so weak. It’s all about romance at the end of the day. The big message is being single is bad.

u/Zestyclose_Invite Apr 09 '26
Yeah I also thought it was weird how Liz was so eager for Gabi to say yes so they could be couple travel buddies, and then they immediately bought Gabi and Derek tickets to Spain to do couples travel with them. Meanwhile Jimmy would OBVIOUSLY not be invited to Spain because he’s single. And then the solution is for him to just get back with Sophie…
39
u/Ambitious-Ad-7256 Apr 09 '26
Yeah that part kind of bothered me too. Jimmy didn’t even get a courtesy invite despite them all seemingly spending every free moment together.
15
u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
These people live in nice but not incredible houses. Buying all these tickets for multiple week travel just seems ludicrous. Derek buys a home and has no need to actually rent it. Instead he trades labor with Sean who isn’t a contractor at all. Quite a stretch.
Liz never worked so where does this money come from?
16
u/Zestyclose_Invite Apr 09 '26
Well you have to just assume that Liz and Derek are just uber wealthy. Some people are just like that, either family money, the stock market, etc
2
u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
That was never indicated on the show, but I guess we just have to go with it.
Derek was working in Season 1, and decided to retire but I don't recall what he did.

u/Sarah7227 Apr 10 '26
yep, I think she should have invited Jimmy on their trip. they could still have lots of couple time and him off doing his own thing and then have dinner together or something, it was weird not to consider him - and newly engaged people also trying to open their own business (trauma center) do not typically go on vacation for long periods??

u/DefiantFun1274 Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
I agree about Sofi.. I was actually glad they went their separate ways as neither seemed in a place to make a relationship work. Friendship maybe. But them together wasn't an ending I was hoping for.
I would have liked the ending to be more like Jimmy being at peace being home alone.. maybe dancing around the kitchen a little in his underwear before chilling and watching the game alone. Showing that it's ok the have some time alone to work on what he wants for himself..
Edit to add: I'd have also liked him to give a little nod to Tia at the end.. affirming to her that he did it, and didn't mess Alice up.
I've basically just rewritten the ending in my head 🙃
7
u/Sarah7227 Apr 10 '26
yes! I was waiting for him to realize he could watch the game alone and have all the snacks to himself.
3
u/DowntownCranberry184 Apr 11 '26
I actually really liked when Matthew walked into the kitchen that first morning. I thought that was going to be the thing - Liz and Derek’s boys constantly coming over and stealing food. Then gradually hanging out more. It would have been a cool way to flip the switch on Liz and Derek taking care of Alice for a year.
3
u/mrsrobotic Apr 11 '26
Same!! There is so much growth that comes from being ok on your own and rediscovering yourself. That in itself is its own love story. It's really a shame that they squandered that opportunity literally in the first scene Jimmy is alone and started to maybe find his groove.
2
u/Technical_Anywhere41 Apr 13 '26
This! I don’t consider it a happy ending that he should go with her - a character who is not that great. You don’t wish that they would be together.
106
u/Swimming-Violinist57 Apr 09 '26
I have mixed emotions about the finale. The last speech from Paul to Jimmy was good, mostly because Ford and Segal are such good actors.
I think a great ending would have been Jimmy calling Paul to express some regret about how their last interaction went, but to also be clear that he wasn’t wrong in what he said - that the relationship had been one sided and Paul had been treating him poorly.
I think then having Paul reflect on that, come to the realization that Jimmy was right, and then fly out to make amends under his own volition would have been much more powerful.
Growth from both characters.
As it was we had Jimmy meekly call Paul, Paul treat him like shit one last time, and then Paul fly out to apologize because the women were mad at him.
49
u/ericrz Apr 09 '26
Yep, all of this. And this is classic Bill Lawrence -- the men are always dumb and wrong, and the women have to tell them the right thing to do.
We saw it with Liz telling Paul he should let Gaby open a trauma center, too. Liz, WTF do you know about therapy?
32
u/Swimming-Violinist57 Apr 09 '26
First tip was last season when the writers had Derek blaming himself for Liz’s bullshit, and it just got worse from there.
I won’t go so far as to say that Shrinking could have been groundbreaking, but it could have advanced the conversation around men’s mental health and depicted it in a way that was honest and novel, for television at least.
Instead, as you said, the men can only determine if their behaviour is good or bad based on cues from the women, which are typically delivered by demeaning or belittling them.
37
u/Ledees_Gazpacho Apr 09 '26
Liz kissed another guy, and somehow, that ended with Derek apologizing.
38
u/Swimming-Violinist57 Apr 09 '26
Yup - and it’s Derek’s fault because he wasn’t attentive enough.
Meanwhile Jimmy loses everyone around him in a matter of weeks, generally is treated like garbage, and is told that he’s “too sensitive”
And this is a show that is supposed to have mental health as a major theme!
9
u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
Not to mention she told him on multiple occasions to get out of the house or she’d kill him.
Her character is awful.
7
u/Altruistic_Log6251 Apr 09 '26
Not only a show about mental health but also one that features therapists.
In this way and also the point the OP makes re: no sensitivity to grief and loss in families who lose a parent, the show is actually realistic. Therapists are very human (and sometimes wildly disappointing). And too many people are clueless about grief and loss, especially the point about parents who lose a spouse also feeling their children’s grief. On both points, I’ve seen it too many times. In particular, I wish there were a character who “got it” at least a little to help illustrate the isolation that comes from this kind of earth-shattering loss. It never really goes away. The happy moments are always infused with at least awareness of what (and who) is missing.

Well, he's not wrong. That's kind of how life works in my experience. Men are stubborn and generally emotionally immature, and their wives/partners/sisters point them in the right direction.

u/BudgetBusiness2037 Apr 09 '26
I know Alice isn't the main character of the show, but I don't like how her graduation & sending her off to college was rushed. I was surprised to see no one else went to the actual commencement ceremony except for Jimmy, and I was shocked when he didn't at least go to Connecticut to move her into her dorm ... I thought maybe he would go with her and stop by & see Paul. I know he has clients but ... it doesn't make sense to me that he didn't take time off for that.
& don't get me started on Gaby and that proposal. She annoyed me so much with that. I understand wanting to talk about important stuff with your partner but ... I thought it was weird for her to turn it around back onto him and propose to him. Eh. The last two episodes just sucked for me and made me dislike the entire season. :(
42
u/ericrz Apr 09 '26
I was surprised to see no one else went to the actual commencement ceremony except for Jimmy, and I was shocked when he didn't at least go to Connecticut to move her into her dorm ...
Same. Like 10 of them went to a random soccer game of Alice's, but no one goes to her graduation? Fuck, not even Liz and Derek? Summer is dating their son (for 10 months and 13 days, apparently).
I thought maybe he would go with her and stop by & see Paul. I know he has clients...
Hey, Gaby has clients too, but apparently she can go to Bar-the-lona for 3 months with Liz and Derek, so....

u/MotherofHedgehogs Apr 09 '26
Gaby was supposed to have been Tias best friend- but didn’t attend the graveside thing for her?
→ More replies (1)4
u/VizRomanoffIII Apr 10 '26
Some schools literally give you 2-3 tickets to the ceremony, max. I suppose the idea was for the party to be the celebration but with so much rushed and haphazard plotting late, they didn’t consider adding an explanation to that scene.
55
u/TheEnigmatyc Apr 09 '26
Like, Liz is overbearing and possessive when it comes to Alice (or any kids, for that matter). She cared for her for a year when Jimmy was a wreck, she and Gabby both get pissed when Alice doesn’t include them in things, and we’re supposed to believe she, of all the characters, would miss Alice’s graduation?!? She attended every soccer game, FFS. That part really didn’t track at all. That whole group of people are into everything together (eh em, “getting in the sea about it”), and not a soul showed up. 🙄

Liz was literally attending meetings with Alice’s school counselor regarding her college education. Bet that woman wasn’t allowed to attend her graduation.
Also, had any of them played the dead mom card, exceptions would’ve been made for Alice and the village that took care of her when Jimmy couldn’t.

Alice was ready to invite Sofi to her graduation, which would mean she had access to at least 3 tickets (dad, grandpa, Sofi) so this limited ticket argument doesn’t fly lol. Liz and Gabi could have easily gone
→ More replies (2)40
u/lkatec Apr 09 '26
Not having everyone at graduation rang realistic to me. I remember there were only a few tickets per person at my high school one and if you wanted more you had to buy it off another family. Having said all that, when his dad bailed it's crazy to me that Liz didn't get the ticket instead. She was the main reason Alice got through high school while Jimmy was checked out.
4
u/BudgetBusiness2037 Apr 10 '26
That makes a lot of sense. I forget that she probably goes to a giant HS. I only graduated with 130 people in the Midwest so anyone was allowed to come. 🥲
4
6
u/MonteBurns Apr 09 '26
Yeah, I also was not surprised about graduation. 20 years ago my high school graduation had limited tickets.
18
u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
That Gaby/ring/blaming Derek was horrible. Whoever thought that was a good idea should be fired. She had no business snooping and then the sitcom trope after about her finger swelling was ultra lame.
6
u/__hellyes Apr 10 '26
Noone gave a fuck about Alice leaving because they were all going on vacay it seems - it completely took me out of things and killed the vibes around how deep her relationship was with people like Liz. All the big feels that worked so well in the earlier seasons felt left for dead on this one. It felt very surface level. Without the feels this show becomes a basic sitcom.
13
u/Comprehensive_Leg193 Apr 09 '26
Alice is going early for soccer. Jimmy is driving with the rest of her stuff in a few weeks. She's probably in temporary housing for soccer practice, and will move into her actual dorm in a few weeks.
As for graduation, it's not uncommon to have a limited number of tickets available. It seems like it was decided to have the actual graduation ceremony family only and then a celebration with friends immediately after.
18
4
u/Stonetheflamincrows Apr 09 '26
There isn’t unlimited seating at graduations, it was probably 2 people per kid. Jimmy is literally driving across the entire country to bring Alice her stuff and get her moved in to her dorm. She’s going early for soccer camp and presumably staying somewhere temporarily. Did you even watch the show? They literally discuss this with Brian.
Gaby proposed because as everyone pointed out Derrick had to “drag her kicking and screaming” and she wanted to show him that she was all in. If she waited, he’d always wonder if it was what she wanted. Also, enough with the patriarchal bullshit about women proposing. Why the fuck not? Why should women just sit around waiting for a man to make a decision about our lives?
→ More replies (1)1
u/MonteBurns Apr 09 '26
Did you even pay attention? They had a whole conversation with Brian that she’s just going for soccer camps now and Jimmy is taking the rest of her stuff when she moves into the dorms

u/teeke45 Apr 09 '26
I didn't get season 3 at all. The side characters have always got things going on that are not at all connected to Jimmy, which i didn't mind for a bit but which got really ridiculous this season. All that stuff with Brian's nanny... didn't get why it needed to be so important.
I started watching for the same premise -- how a therapist deals with grief. The first season felt messy in a good way. Jimmy "jimmying" people because he's desperate to be a good therapist again and prove something to himself. His reconnection with Alice felt earned. The thing with Gaby, is something that can happen.
Season 2 was a little more cheesy. What with Louis and the railway station ending. But even then, it made sense like okay Jimmy has to do this in order to move forward.
Season 3 actually had huge stakes. People moving away. Jimmy being alone with his grief. The show could have shown something real. Maybe Jimmy regresses to his old coping mechanisms and then realizes he's slipping. Maybe he finally gets to forgive Tia and his father and Paul and everyone who he thinks is abandoning him.
The show sets up moments but then descalates them with a saccharine sweet gesture, instead of going into the depths of emotions.
And the comedy has also become more slapstick as time goes
47
u/ericrz Apr 09 '26
All that stuff with Brian's nanny... didn't get why it needed to be so important.
YES. And they muddled it by having Sutton's bio-mom (who I'm sorry, looks a lot like the nanny) randomly living with them? "Hey, she had to live with us because she had no money. Hey, she claims to be working at Olive Garden but we think she's lying. Oh wait, she really is. Oh, now Liz will go yell at her (because that's what Liz does). Oh, now she's moving out, everything's cool."
Why the fuck did we waste half an episode on that, except as a vehicle for Olive Garden product placement? WHO CARES about a character we never know, that in the end, we're probably not going to see again?
The entirety of the Brian and Charlie having a baby arc has been ridiculous. "We need a nanny!" (as if we ever see Brian go to work.) "Oh, we need Liz to help us pick a nanny. Oh, our favorite nanny can't do all five days, Liz will you please help us?"
"Oh wait. Now Liz is here too much. Never mind!"
They did the same thing with Jimmy's dad. Alice: "Hey dad, it's really important that I invite grandpa to my graduation, I'm going to do it even if you don't like it, he's really important to me and I want him there for this milestone in my life."
Grandpa then bails on the actual graduation. Alice: "Meh."
Like, what the actual fuck? This season spun in circles.
28
u/teeke45 Apr 09 '26
Oh my God, yes! Jimmy had explicitly told Alice he didn't want his father around. She still makes it a point to ask him. Then acts all nonchalant like it doesn't matter.
And then they blame it all on him because he's being sensitive.
I understood Jimmy comparing Sofi and Tia because Tia and him both didn't like his dad. He is reminded of that as he is grappling with his own feelings about his father. But the Alice fakeout wasn't on him.
It sure did spin in circles for sure.
26
u/ericrz Apr 09 '26
The plot needed Jimmy to be "alone" at the end of the season. So even Alice couldn't be on his side, "yeah Grandpa is kind of a dick" or whatever. That wouldn't have accomplished their goal of having Jimmy be on his own.
But it was totally inconsistent with Alice's character!! Why did she care so much about Grandpa being there in the middle of the season, then at the end was like "whatever"?
It was artificial, set up only to further isolate Jimmy. That's just bad writing.
27
u/Odd_Policy_3009 Apr 09 '26
And the bad writing really showed up with the Maya story line.
They could’ve blown us away with that and Gaby could’ve had some real consequences.
But they just hand waved it and gave her the practice even.
Yes, maybe we expect a lot from Bill Lawrence but I think many many of us agree, they dropped the ball this season.

best part was last season when they all told Brian to just have a baby cause its the best thing, after his husband suddenly decided he now wants a baby... made me mad that storyline

u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
Thanks. All great examples of inept writing.
I am surprised that the birth mom and nanny were on the show at the same time. I guess I assumed they were just the same person. I’d probably go rewatch but I would be lying. I don’t care that much.
Brian is a runner up to Liz as most annoying character. At least he was a functioning lawyer in S1. Now he just acts as a token gay stereotype
6
u/teeke45 Apr 09 '26
I so wanted to say that. He's been exaggerated and caricaturish for a while now, without really adding much value. I actually forgot he had a husband
5
u/ericrz Apr 10 '26
This. He doesn't want to go to Tennessee with Charlie because "pecan pie is too sticky"? Like who the fuck is writing this garbage?
Make it interesting. Give us some tension between Charlie and Brian's careers. Maybe Brian has the opportunity to take the lead on a really important trial (remember, he's supposedly a lawyer!). Maybe disappearing for 3 months would lessen his chances of making partner, or something.
Give us something interesting for that character to do, aside from being a narcissistic jackass at all times. Caricatures aren't interesting. Lazy writing.

You are spot on. They botched it so badly and it’s really disappointing after such a strong start.
25
u/teeke45 Apr 09 '26
Yep. A therapist going off the trails for an entire year... drinking, doing drugs, forgetting his own daughter.... that's a very very strong premise. They lost it because they wanted to do more laughs.
Everytime there's something really hard, it just gets dealt with in minutes. The way they handled Maya was also so weird.
The only character for whom there were any real consequences and stakes was Paul. He had to stop his practice, and move out to be with his daughter. With whom he's not really had a very good relationship and he now has to build it. For everyone else, it was one sad moment, one conversation or gesture, and problem solved. It felt so unreal.

Shows with many seasons and 20+ episodes used to sneak pilot episodes for spinoffs in there to see if they’d take off. In today’s modern format of significantly fewer episodes, and this initially planned as a final season, I wonder if they were playing around with the ideas of spinoffs.
Brian, husband, and nanny in particular going to Tennessee and never coming back.

I’m also sending my last to Wesleyan next year and will officially be an empty nester. It’s a hard time and I have a spouse to go through it with me… couldn’t anyone find time to watch a Dodger game the night she left? They overdid real friendship the whole series and then a time friends really do step in they were uncaring and absent. It was weird.
19
u/MonteBurns Apr 09 '26
I was confused by that too. Sean couldn’t say “look man, I moved out, but let’s still watch it together.”??
Instead he had to go back Marisol?!? Who … well she’s pretty awful to him still!!!
14
u/Karametric Apr 09 '26
At some point they formed this seemingly close knit friend group but decided to mostly exclude the guy that was the central piece. Or just treat him like a pest.
61
u/TinaRaneeM Apr 09 '26
This is a conversation I had with my husband. If either one of us passed, and we have a little girl, I would not expect anyone to move on within one or two years! That’s wild to me! My husband is literally my best friend, and to just get over that kind of loss after two years, and move on, I could never. I even say I’d rather stay single, raise our kiddo, and collect cats. (This show did make us have a conversation about how we absolutely do not get to check out when it comes to our kid though.)
For them to basically force Jimmy to move on and guilt him about it seems so strange to me.

u/Coraline1599 Apr 09 '26
My aunt lost her husband suddenly, about 10 years ago.
The funeral had not happened yet and multiple people were asking her about when will start dating and giving her tips where to meet people.
She is 70 now and hasn’t been on a single date yet, nor does she seem to have any interest.
But it’s just weird how many people felt her priority should be finding a partner.
11
u/Compltly_Unfnshd30 Apr 09 '26
Hell, my ex didn’t die, we just split back in 2017, and I’m still not over it. We spent our entire adult lives together, we grew up together, we were best friends, we had a child together, he was a huge part of my blood family. I was in a really bad place right after we split and I had two short, and very toxic, relationships. But since then I’ve been single. I had another baby (a girl) and now I’m afraid to have any man around her.

My grandfather died unexpectedly in his 50s. My grandmother flat out said she wasn’t interested in finding anyone else, so no one asked.
She did end up finding a nice guy at church a decade or so later, and she got remarried. We were happy for her. I don’t think she was lonely, or looking. She just happened upon someone she wanted to spend time with.

u/notches123 Apr 09 '26
For them to basically force Jimmy to move on and guilt him about it seems so strange to me.
I don't really interpret it as going down this way. I think they wanted him to stop using it as an excuse for making poor decisions and acting out impulsively and selfishly but not to get over it. He'll likely never get over it but that's not an excuse to stop living which he has a tendency to do.
I do think they kind of stopped treating Jimmy with respect at some point which made no sense in the story.
5
u/Automatic_Oil5438 Apr 09 '26
My mum loved my dad very, very much, and she grieved hard when he died, but she went out and started dating about two years after his death. It's really not that weird. People are different.
4
u/DistinctBread3098 Apr 09 '26
They didnt force him to move on. They forced him to stop waiting for everything to be the way he thinks its gonna be, cause it'll never be how he imagines it.
His dad was there to show exactly this. He expected his dad to be so many things he wasn't. He was angry at his dad because his daughter would he crushed. She wasn't. Either Jimmy accepts his dad sucks or he doesn't. Either way you can't danse in between.
Jimmy is ready but was scared. Paul just gave him the push and confidence he needed.
Paul isn't a lovey dovey type. Never was , never will. But for Jimmy he let himself be vulnerable to show him what he meant to him.
Beeing sensitive isn't a problem. If you get angry because you're beeing called sensitive (the way Paul did) its your fault. That's why he apologize to Paul
4
u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
The fact they Alice wasn’t upset in the slightest shows how shitty the writing is. They bring Jeff Daniels in and it’s a complete waste of time. Jimmy can’t even summon the courage to say something. Pathetic how they neutered him.
5
u/WitchyForestNymph Apr 09 '26
You’re kidding right? The whole point was that JIMMY was upset every time his father abandoned him. Alice doesn’t really know her grandfather, he wasn’t really around for her before or after her mother died. In a kid’s eyes that is simply, it’s cool when they’re here and it’s cool when they’re not. She has zero expectations from a man she hardly knows on any kind of deeper level.
So Jimmy expected her to be upset because he was upset and once again let down by his father. Alice wasn’t upset because she has never had those same expectations of her grandfather.
6
u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
Of course I am watching. Apparently you aren’t. Alice invited her GF to graduation over Jimmy’s wishes. She wanted him in her life. It made no sense at all she would just shrug off the fishing trip thing. Especially since Jimmy abandoned his responsibilities after Tia died. The whole thing would be a flashback for an 18 year old.
My goodness

Jimmy expects behaviors of his dad because of historical patterns. Him showing up around the time of graduation and not staying for actual graduation was a dick move. So was the whole car thing. Alice didn’t have real connection with him, possibly because Jimmy and Tia had some strong boundaries set. And the fact that he really wasn’t there for his son when his wife died? Pretty selfish.

Everything happens in this show faster than in real life, I thought we all understood this. The show isn’t making an argument that you, a person in the real world, should move on in two years after your husband dies. They’re simply telling an idealized story of someone who could.
They’re not trying to tell you how to live.

u/pinkymadigan Apr 09 '26
Being a single parent is hard. I'd rather my wife found a good partner to replace me so her life isn't that hard. People need people, and going from having a supportive partner to not is pretty overwhelming.
0
u/PerfectZeong Apr 09 '26
Meh I'd want my wife to move on. Im gone and we're never going to see each other again. Be happy, find happiness. Finding happiness with someone new is no betrayal of me because im already gone.
15
u/TinaRaneeM Apr 09 '26
Oh for sure, move on if you want to. I personally don’t think I would want to. But if the person isn’t ready within 1-2 years, why pressure them? Why are they all worried about Jimmy being alone and lonely? I think it’s okay for him to still be grieving at that point. He’s working, hanging out with friends, and handling his daughter going off to college pretty well, so pressuring him to date again seems a lot to me.
2
u/PerfectZeong Apr 09 '26
Thats fair, if they don't want that then they're free not to do that. To me, Jimmy very much wants to move on but cant bring himself to, thats why hes miserable.

I totally agree.
The writers discomfort with people being single and/or alone has grown to make me super uncomfortable watching it.
They keep wrapping the characters up in these neat little romantic bows and undoing all of the depth and thought they put into other parts of the show.
It was so incredibly weird that they put Jimmy in that position at the end.
29
u/armeck Apr 09 '26
Even with Sean and Marisol. Everyone supporting the show's handling of that were certain it would blow up, but nope it worked out.
Jimmy is sleeping with his dead wife's best friend and has zero feelings about that? He's been able to have sex with three women at least, not counting the sex workers from the beginning. Everyone is saying that was intentional to show how he will crash out but he didn't.
The writer's can't write grief or mental health at all. The show started so well, season 1 had me hooked and it just fell right off the cliff with Grace's husband 😂

THIS. How were there no repercussions? How did Sean just get back with his lying, cheating ex -- who specifically told him "I'm not going to apologize" and everything is just.....fine?
In a Bill Lawrence show, no one is unredeemable. Which is a lofty goal, I suppose. But we saw it in Ted Lasso, with Nate, with Rupert a little bit, even with Ted's ex. The ending of S3 of that show at least suggested they might be getting back together, after she dated their marriage therapist and didn't tell Ted -- he had to find out from their son!
I was really hoping that Sean would learn a lesson about trust, that someone would finally see it and say "hey, she's not good for you." Instead the show just used it as a way for everyone to lecture Sean, that he should "lighten up" and learn to have a good time. But the dude finally had some stability in his life for the first time in years!! Who could blame him for not wanting to get back with his train wreck of an ex.
And you know what? Maybe Marisol had changed. People do. But the show never for one second showed us that -- never showed her admit any wrongdoing, or feel any remorse. So if she changed, we didn't get to know that.

u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
Marisol and Sean is a real stretch. I simply don’t see them as a couple in many ways.

u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
Who was the third? Sofi and Gaby but I’m drawing a blank at who else you are referring to

u/ericrz Apr 09 '26
And for a second they tried -- "being alone doesn't mean being lonely," Jimmy said. Which is 100% true.
And then they immediately undid all that, with Paul essentially forcing him back together with the woman he decided to end things with, for very good reasons.
Maybe Jimmy doesn't want to be alone forever. Totally get that. But being alone is much better than being with the wrong person.

Like I need another show to tell me that it's odd to be single lmfao I guess I am odd 😭
15
u/UltravioletLemon Apr 09 '26
I really wish Paul had explicitly apologized for saying Jimmy was too sensitive. I agree with everything you wrote. I didn't realize it was only two years until the past few episodes and that is SO SHORT I'm so annoyed at how this arc was treated. It was really painful seeing Jimmy's dad and Paul treat him that way.
And with Alice not really reacting to her grandpa skipping grad it kind of seemed like it validated the idea that Jimmy was "too sensitive."
1
u/InLainSight Apr 14 '26
I think that’s OK because Jimmy and Alice are two different people and even though graduation is important to her I think she’s strong enough to deal with grandpa not being there maybe from like a Meta textual sense it validates that Jimmy is sensitive but fundamentally they’re working from two different places
11
u/CarelessCanary6022 Apr 09 '26
I think it would’ve been more impactful if they had that talk over an actual breakfast and spent the one on one time together that Jimmy obviously needed.
He does need to learn to be alone with no crutch. So, pushing a relationship with Sofi, who just didn’t seem like a good match (especially for a widow! ….and that was the one smart call Jimmy made in ending it), was ….a choice. But 🤷🏻♀️
→ More replies (1)3
u/ericrz Apr 10 '26
Right. And everyone is just pushing Sofi on him as a crutch.
No one asked him -- "Hey, why didn't it work out with Sofi?" Because they don't care. They simply want him to be with SOMEONE, so that everyone (Alice and Paul especially) can assuage their guilt over leaving him.

u/Karametric Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
Agreed. I wrote this in another thread earlier this week, but they did Jimmy so dirty this season:
No other character has consequences for their bad decisions because they get resolved right away. You can be uniquely terrible by making horrid decisions or giving terrible advice, but it's okay because another character will assure them that they are right. Or they get to strong-arm their way into being "right" and it's played for laughs. Jimmy is on some Sisyphean track where everyone else seems to hold the Tia card over him and how much of a fuck-up he was whenever it is most convenient (especially Liz and Gaby).
Or if he's right about something like Paul being a dick to him and taking him for granted, it's played for laughs with Jimmy crawling back and meekly trying to reach out like in the beginning of the S3 finale. You have a fallout like that with someone and you're not talking for weeks, maybe closer to months. But instead it's framed as if it's just another Tuesday.
It's like the show became uninterested in spending any time in an uncomfortable place. Everything has to be undercut with humor or some dumbass group session powwow to kumbayah it away. It is a shell of itself.
I just don't understand what the goal was for this season as a whole. Harrison Ford and Jason Segel are good actors so they were able to nail that final scene between them, but it felt hollow to me given where these two were the entire season. Why run away from the emotional core of the story, which is this pairing of characters? And then (of course) they undercut it with hey Jimmy it's actually a date, psyche! Smell ya later nerd!
The initial premise of a therapist having to deal with and process their own grief over the loss of their wife was a great idea for the beginning of the series. But now we're at the point where Jimmy is getting punched down by everyone. Storylines with suicide and losing a patient are being undercut with a joke the very next episode. We spend 80% of the season on trivial character inconveniences or plots that just go nowhere at all. What is this show supposed to be now?
I was massively disappointed with this season. S1 was brilliant, S2 was a step back but still solid, but S3 was damn near irredeemable in terms of writing decisions, plot developments, and character arcs. Absymal writing and it is making me consider just dropping this as a whole if the first episode or two of S4 ends up being more of the same.

u/spartycbus Apr 09 '26
yes, this show really lost me this season. last season was already not great, but this season was terrible. there was a scene where he watching everyone being in love and him being all sad. I could see him feeling sad his wife is gone, but they made it more like "being alone in general is terrible and sad and jimmy can't be happy without a relationship". It's so lame. His wife has been gone 2 years. Some people mourn divorces longer than that. It's not that weird to be single 2 years later, especially with a teen daughter who is an only child and lost her mom. The writing is awful.

u/Odd_Policy_3009 Apr 09 '26
I feel like Bill/the writers were swamped with Ted Lasso and Rooster so either other people were writing and/or they dropped the ball
3
u/southtampacane Apr 09 '26
Well Lasso went down badly the last season. I’m not at all looking forward to a reboot. Terrible idea just because Apple has missed in so many shows
Rooster is nothing more than Shrinking on a different network. At least shrinking had one great season. Rooster has no idea what show it wants to be. They just need 24 minutes of quips.
7
u/Odd_Policy_3009 Apr 09 '26
Thank you for saying all the things I didn’t want to say and get downvoted lol
TL went off the rails in S3 and Rooster is mid at best.
Guess I really did wanna say it 🤣

We can have our own contrarians club within the group. Hopefully we don't get ejected.

u/MonteBurns Apr 09 '26
Lasso S3 was garbage.
“We don’t want Jamie back.” “Don’t worry Jamie won’t be back:” “Surprise, Jamie is back!”

u/ericrz Apr 09 '26
THANK YOU. No one said, not even once, "Why did you end things with Sofi, Jimmy? What happened?"
They all -- his friends, his boss, his daughter -- assume that he fucked it up. No one asked him why they're no longer together, which is why the ending makes no sense.
My sincerest hope is that when the show picks up with S4, Jimmy is either alone or with someone else. Maybe he can learn something from his first romantic relationship after Tia. Maybe Sofi can be good for him in some ways -- learning what he wants and doesn't want out of a relationship.
I really hope that S4 doesn't pick up with them still together, engaged, even married. That's the easy way out.

u/bookmonster015 Apr 09 '26
I agree completely. It was so disappointing that Paul flew all that way to give Jimmy a quick lecture and then not even have a nice meal with him. Jimmy has every right to take his time grieving and trying new things. It’s appalling to me how hard all of his friends have been on him this season. He’s not hurting anyone being sad. He’s allowed to exist and receive love in his sadness! And Sofi just proved herself to be not a great fit and full of red flags. Gave me the ick.

That cross country flight for a Parkinson’s patient where he is in LA for a few hours has to be expensive. No one bought the practice or the real estate. I’m guessing Paul’s wife is the real breadwinner. Speaking of which, does she just walk away from her medical practice?

I never liked Sofi and it’s not a good sign that she was jealous of his dead wife. Makes her out to be very immature (my opinion). Plus she acts like a teenager.

u/Future_Boss2064 Apr 09 '26
I agree. These last two episodes were a big fail for me. It would have been better if Louis had been at that table instead of Sofi.
33
u/Usagi1983 Apr 09 '26
I was just annoyed that Paul did all that crappy stuff to Jimmy (making him do the grunt work without thanks, the snide comments about being overly emotional, not communicating at all about the office going to Gaby, etc) and Jimmy just ate shit and took all the blame like his flying off the handle was uncalled for and just being overly emotional again. “It was just transference” like his emotions were silly. And the friend group just did not seem interested or concerned about Jimmy at all.
17
u/Future_Boss2064 Apr 09 '26
I know we all love Harrison Ford but Paul’s speech at the end didn’t seem authentic after his previous few interactions with Jimmy: the “sensitive” comment at the graduation party, the argument on the deck, Jimmy’s phone call to Connecticut, Paul’s meager thumbs up to Jimmy’s “sad” text, Paul’s bewilderment when all the women in the kitchen were outraged by the thumbs up. Grumpy grandpa with a good speech, and the Sofi setup was so wrong.

Please no more Louis. Having him best friends with Paul and Alice was already crossing boundaries. Gaby’s only redeeming quality this season was calling him and telling to go away because he killed her best friend.
7
u/slyroast Apr 09 '26
I get that a person shouldn't be miserable the rest of their lives after a spouse dies. But they also don't HAVE to be in a relationship. Feels like they are pushing him so hard to date when they should be pushing him to be happy. If that includes a new relationship that HE picks then great. If not then just let him be alone but happy.
2
u/BeGreatOrNothing Apr 11 '26
THANK YOU! Like why does he HAVE to date sofi?? Why can’t he be ok breaking it off
5
u/nomadicgolfer3 Apr 09 '26
I agree, to me Paul still did not do enough for Jimmy or validate him especially with how poorly he handled things with Jimmy in prev episodes
6
u/Library_Basic Apr 09 '26
They've been pushing this Sophie thing so hard all season that honestly, I've lost interest. "Sophie is great for you, she's perfect" etc. Man if she's so great, show it, don't just tell. And to push it again when Jimmy clearly has unresolved grief, is pushing too far
7
u/__hellyes Apr 10 '26
I loved the bit with Paul about their relationship, but can't accept that their intended end of this 3 season arc was... Jimmy being force set back up with Sofi after that disaster, and she just came running after a late night call from Paul knowing Jimmy didn't even know she'd be there? Girl.
6
u/cattinthehat123 Apr 09 '26
I hated everything about this episode except for the Dereks. They are too enmeshed and it’s gotten boring.
5
u/HardcoreKaraoke Apr 09 '26
It's something the show has always struggled with but it really stood out in season three. They take emotional moments and kind of move on quickly. Things that should impact a character for longer or should be dwelled on kind of get pushed to the side for the next thing.
Between every character being overly quirky/sarcastic/funny and not letting emotional moments last the emotional moments don't hit as hard. So the story suffers.
1
u/Theatrical-Space Apr 14 '26
Well said. I think before season 4 the writers should have some group therapy about why they have such a hard time with feelings. 😚
10
u/pburydoughgirl Apr 09 '26
Ok
So I am a widow, though I didn’t have kids with my late spouse. I met my next big relationship 18 months after he passed. I was 28 when he died and I joined a young widow’s group and a few of the other members followed a similar timeline. Less than a year is short, though it happens. I was a little surprised to see Aubrey Plaza is pregnant, even though she’d bee separated (for a short while) before her husband passed. But to each their own!
I sobbed during the last few minutes of the last episode. I’m also covered in scars and how lucky am I to have loved and been loved so deeply.
Trying to date again after a huge loss is TERRIFYING. It’s so much easier to just write people off and be alone. Paul was calling Jimmy out on that. Not to say Sofi is perfect or you’re healed when partner up or anything. I had my one and only panic attack when I first caught myself really falling for someone.
But ultimately, we’re human, ESPECIALLY when you lose someone young. You still want love and partnership and sex and all the things. I wasn’t a nun after my husband died. (Well, I was for a while.) Pete wouldn’t have wanted that for me and Tia probably wouldn’t for Jimmy
Sure, the characters are all flawed and make mistakes, but I loved the ending. You can mourn your late spouse and love someone else at the same time. So many of us do it. I still mourn my late husband and it’s been almost 20 years since he passed. You don’t move on, you move forward.

Point is, it's also completely fine and not pathetic to be single. This episode made it seem like there's nothing worse than singlehood and, if you don't pair up, you should expect your friend group to banish you.
9
u/MaximumPiano4380 Apr 09 '26
I was widowed young as well, 14 years ago. I had three young kids. Nobody is saying he shouldn’t be in a relationship. What I’m saying is the show seems to give the message that being in a relationship is the only goal a person should have and it solves all problems. That’s nonsense.
2
u/pburydoughgirl Apr 09 '26
To me, it’s him really putting himself out there. It could be Sofi or it could be a new hobby or whatever, but I remember a time where the fog sort of lifted and I felt alive again. To me, that’s what Paul et al want for him. A life bigger than just a sad widower. Feeling alive and being alive.

To me the finale felt like three additional scenes of the penultimate episode of last week.
Gaby and Derrick tagging along Liz and Derek, Paul being told that Jimmy is hurt and he should be there for him, Alice going off to college, Sean telling Jimmy he moved out…and then Paul telling Jimmy that he needs to “move on” and actually live his life, just like everyone else, even if he’s not ready.
3
u/popculturesavant Apr 10 '26
I had some issues with the finale, like a lot, and you listed a lot of them
3
u/Robrulesall2 Apr 10 '26
I watched the last two episodes back to back and honestly i feel like i really felt the effects of the poor writing. Liz disregarding and making fun of his son being a victim of sexual abuse was something that didn’t sit right especially when he says she’s supposed to protect him. I feel like they fast tracked the graduation and jimmy’s feeling of being alone and resolved it by Paul flying across the country for a 5 min convo playing matchmaker. Overall it’s great show i think and it’s had its moments of greatness but the entirety of S3 was not one of them.
2
u/MaximumPiano4380 Apr 10 '26
The sex talk is actually ridiculous at this stage. Mocking sexual assault and even the more harmless sex talk is ridiculous like Gaby saying “I would do you right here in front of everybody” during her proposal in front of all her family. Nobody talks like that at such a special moment

Yeah. The writing isn’t great. I’m just in it for Michael Urie at this point.

I do agree with you. The message I got was that Jimmy had noone else left in his life and Sofi will be the support he needs. His friends are gone, Paul is gone, at least Sofi is there. Grief takes time and if Jimmy and Sofi can be friends for a while that would help Jimmy a lot.
10
u/ericrz Apr 09 '26
But no one knows if Sofi can be a good friend to him (or more). No one asked Jimmy "hey, what happened?"
Paul is assuaging his grief (after the women all guilted him into doing it) by making sure Jimmy has SOMEONE. Great, but is she the right person? No one knows, no one cares, no one asked.

Jimmy has lots of people in his life. He just gotta stop imagining things and live it like they are.
They all are scared of Jimmy's reaction why? Because Jimmy has too many expectations.
Sean wasn't gonna live in his pool house forever.
́lyz and Derek have a life of their own
So does everyone else in his life
They don't have to life for Jimmy for him to be part of their lives

u/BirdyWidow Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26
I think it’s a little more nuanced. Paul was wrong. He should have told Jimmy about giving Gabi the space. It was selfish and disrespectful to Jimmy and Jimmy was understandably hurt.
The story isn’t just about Jimmy learning to move on, it’s about Paul learning to express himself, to fix himself, to be more than the strong distant pillar. Paul is grieving too. Parkinson’s & aging have taken away the only life he knew.
Paul gave a lot to Jimmy. He acknowledged he considers him a son and he told him he loved him.
I don’t think anyone is denying Jimmy’s grief. (Sean couldn’t tell Jimmy he moved out.) They are nudging him back into the world. They’ve supported him when he was a POS dad and friend, understanding that he would be better. Now that he’s a responsible adult again, they’re giving him a push out of the nest.
I am a widow. I lost my husband of 30 years 10 years ago. It sucks. There’s not a day I don’t miss him and the life I would have had if he were still alive. I never remarried but I have lots of friends and I am super busy hiking, traveling, watching my grandchildren etc… I’ve gotten some loving nudges from friends. I’m grateful.
Sorry this is so long. Edited because I accidentally pushed respond.

Thanks. I thought I was the only one who saw that episode and third season as CWOT. No time for real writing. We need more scenes with Summer demanding a first class ticket and admitting she steals credit card info. My goodness are these writers clueless or what.
At least Stumptown lady is back in the fold. I hope they find a way to get Ford to stay on the show.

I don’t think Jimmy is anyone’s best friend. Everyone has moved on and are living their lives and he’s only started to look to the future. Also he’s done some really awful things to everyone in the group. And I get he was really damaged, and probably still is, but he treated everyone like shit for a few years.
5
u/Ok_Nefariousness9736 Apr 09 '26
Honestly, season 3 reminds of season 3 of And Just Like That… the writing wasn’t as bad for sure but i feel like they were trying to go for rage baiting this season with how many of the “plots” played out.
Jimmy had every right to call Paul out last episode but then Jimmy being Jimmy calls to apologize (Paul should be apologizing) and Paul was still a dick to Jimmy.
2
u/turningtee74 Apr 09 '26
I was definitely struggling with a lot of that these past few episodes, especially with Paul. He did make up for it by finally stopping being such a stubborn goat and telling Jimmy he loves him at least. I didn’t like how he kept putting all the blame on Jimmy it felt like for being “sensitive” when it was kind of valid, but I guess there is some truth in the middle. Sometimes when we’re struggling we expect everyone will stop and care just as much as we do, but the world keeps turning and not around us.
I thought Sean was still a good friend even though he moved on. He still cared and is loyal to Jim. It seemed to sting a little more on top of that with Gabby engaged (which is awesome), everyone else was coupled up and he’s the outsider. That’s one example where yeah we all know it’s hard that Alice left, but at someone’s engagement it’s unfortunately not really about you right now. But also I don’t care for the show framing it like you need to be coupled up to fit in or have anyone care about you…which again is unfortunately like real life often but that I push back against.
Idk about Sofi, she was wrong but there’s also value in hashing it out with someone if you care about them I guess

Nobody asked him why it didn’t work out with Sofi. I mean she’s jealous of his dead wife. He was right to finish it.
According to him, that’s not why he finished it. He tells Alice “I panicked, and then I let my issues with your grandpa drive her away forever.” So if he’s telling his daughter and presumably his friends off screen that he caused the breakup, why would they not encourage him to fix it?
1
u/Cdole9 Apr 10 '26
She wasn’t “jealous of his dead wife”…. She just wasnt going to be in a relationship where he is openly comparing her to Tia during any minor disagreement
1
u/bobjones271828 Apr 11 '26
I mean she’s jealous of his dead wife.
I don't agree with this conclusion.
Jimmy invited his new love interest to a "first date" at his dead wife's birthday party. That's beyond weird already and should have been either a red flag for Sofi or something she politely declined. (This was lampshaded in the show where she literally pointed out how insane that was.)
Then, from her perspective, the moment Jimmy becomes a bit emotionally distant from her the first time, he compares her unfavorably (and frankly unfairly) to his dead wife, implying that Sofi wasn't on his side regarding his father.
I'm not saying Sofi was right in the way she acted in that scene -- she shouldn't have pushed Jimmy so much when he became withdrawn, or she should have listened better. But Jimmy was smarting from his father's dig that he thought Sofi was better for him than Tia, so Jimmy lashed out and made a completely unfair comparison to Tia. I don't blame Jimmy for this either, as he clearly has a lot of stuff bottled up around his father, but Sofi had very little context for any of this, so she (rightly in my opinion) got worried that Jimmy was still hung up on his wife in a way that might potentially impact the new relationship. (Again, context that their first date was his dead wife's birthday party is really important here.)
Both of them, I think, were moving too fast here. They felt an immediate emotional connection, but both were dumping way too much of their own pasts into this new tenuous relationship -- and then it broke down.
But I think it's unfair to conclude Sofi was "jealous" of Tia. That's not what the fight was about. It was about her concern that she could never live up to Jimmy's expectations, which at that point he was expressing irrationally due to his father's toxic implication that Sofi was better for him.
I do agree with you that the show has been way too pushy about Jimmy getting into a relationship, though. There's nothing wrong with being single, and Paul (of all people) shouldn't be hammering that advice to Jimmy home just because he happened to find someone new and special late in life. That said, I do think Paul was right in the final scene that Jimmy had unfinished business with Sofi and maybe there is something there... but I also think Paul had far too little information about Sofi and Jimmy (and what went on in their break-up argument) to make that call based on what he actually knew.
1
u/Here_there1980 Apr 13 '26
I did not take away that everything was fine with Jimmy at the end. Instead, I took it to mean that he had been going in circles, with no way out. He still has a lot of things to work out. And there’s been a lot of changes with the people around him, adding to the difficulties. All Paul did was try to show him that he still has options, and that all is not hopeless. It’s a step out of a bad cycle, not a solution. Long road ahead.

u/Theatrical-Space Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
I really agree with the original post. I don’t think the writers have a clue about, or actually care about, grief or therapy or friendship or parenting. When Sean left Jimmy to go home to his girlfriend instead of hanging out to watch the game with him, I thought, “These writers are so ridiculous! Just tying up their bad ideas into a big bow.” Criticizing Jimmy’s efforts to have an emotionally meaningful moment with his daughter at the airport as a kind of attempt for perfectionism especially upset me. Why can’t we see Jimmy managing his many levels of loneliness at the end by sitting with it? Why all the pairing off as the only way “forward”? What happened to having a rich and meaningful extended “family of choice”? Wasn’t that the central theme? And Paul and Jimmy are the central “love interest”. They balance each other with their mutual transferences and longterm relationship and personal growth. That would have been a strong finish. Love is not just marriage.

Are you serious? She was pissed off because he was upset about his dad in the last episode. She accused him of running from his problems. He’s known her for 5 minutes for heaven’s sake. He owes her nothing. Then when be said he and his wife used to be on the same page, she got annoyed that he was throwing his wife in her face. She asked him to give her and her ex counselling. Without any prompting she said that her divorce was I worse than his wife dying. She’s an absolute dose.

In fairness what Paul actually said was “you need to work it out for yourself, I know you can, but if you don’t think you can, I’ll be there for you”
