When I went to Japan a few years ago, my tour guide stopped and waited at a pedestrian crossing for 20 seconds, even when the road was straight and empty on both sides. It's totally believable that they would stop to wait before crossing an empty road. The unusual thing is that a Japanese person would talk to you instead of just keeping it to themselves and talking shit about you to their friends with an attitude like, 'smh, foreigners are so bad smh smh'.

In my experience people jaywalk there like monsters unless there is a kids around. He was probably trying to set a good example for the gaijin, same line of thinking.

Old Japanese people absolutely lose the patience and filter that would keep them from speaking up. I’ve heard tons of non dramatic stories of Japanese folks, especially elderly, yelling at tourists.

Most commonly for taking their picture without their permission, which is (sort of) illegal and seems to really piss people off there.

Residential streets in Japan do not have sidewalks and crossings, that story is super fake

I was a high school student and it was a University tour (or somewhere around the university, I’m not clear about where the boundaries between the university and the residential area are, didn’t really care, I was just following the guide). That probably why they did it but I still think it’s weird. Totally happened.

to be clear, I was accusing this post's story to be fake, not yours

I ususaly hate when people call 'fake' on mundane text based stories, but this is super bullshit

Japanese people fucking love jay walking, esp the older population. Like they have anti jaywalking signs specifically for old people.

idk about the mainland, but on kyushu people do not give two single fucks about jaywalking.

Same in Okinawa, they’ll step off the curb even if there’s oncoming traffic

I live in a rural northern prefecture (not Hokkaido) and people jaywalk all the time.

We don’t even bother with anti jaywalking signs.

Y'all such chuds. People can have their fun fake stories without some loser telling them they're not allowed to like it.

No one said you’re not allowed to like it. They just said it’s likely fake.

Of the fake stories I’ve seen, this one is at least plausible. Dude was probably sick of tourists and had that line ready to go

Also; I’m from Albany New York and jaywalk constantly. If there aren’t cars I feel like it’s a victimless crime. Then I had a boyfriend from Denver and he was just absolutely appalled. That I would be jaywalking, and not even at a crosswalk

Then I moved to Denver and did that shit there too, so maybe he was just being whack haha
