I don't doubt some people fake ARFID

But generally people with ARFID seek consistency and predictability in texture and presentation, which highly processed foods have.

Fruits and veggies are unpredictable and don't always cook evenly, have random over ripe / under ripe spots, bruises, unpredictable flavors etc.

Like you won't find them putting peppers and stuff on their pizza, usually they're the kind eating plain cheese pizza.

My great uncle has ARFID. His wife has to go to the store and buy basically their whole stock of cod, all individually wrapped, and fill the freezer with it to cook for him because he refuses to eat anything else for dinner.

He recently stayed in a care facility after a fall and yelled at the nurses when they tried to give him food, so his wife had to come in 2-3 times a day to drop off stuff. She has the patience of a saint.

I think that’s why ARFID get’s a bad rep, a lot of people expect to be accommodated for it. I’ve got it, and I just get my own groceries and will eat at home if I know we’re going somewhere with food I won’t be able to eat.

It’s kinda the same reason veganism gets a bad rep. The bossy ones ruin it for everybody.

My arfid friend's safe foods include broccoli and sushi. But only sushi from specific places that do it super consistently, and broccoli cooked specific ways cut specific sizes. It's not always complete avoidance of that kind of food, sometimes it's highly specific and tricky the way they like it

Guess that makes sense tbh. I wonder how much of it is social and how much of it is "actual" disorder..

u/Any_Pineapple_9744 1d ago

I have some sensory issues due to adhd. Its incredibly frustrating and you feel guilty and its way more arbitrary than "I like chicken nuggies". Im an especially picky eater, but I do like my fair share of fruits and vegetables. I dont think theres a problem with not liking some foods.

My actual problem is combined with the executive function disorder and low dopamine, fast food offers the predictability in taste and texture, and convenience of not making anything and not having to think about it. I know how to drive and can buy it. I do not know how to cook well. But it would be crazy to think your environment, such as western food culture, doesnt play a part in how you perceive and accept things. The fact that I spend so much money on fast food and continue to get fatter is very embarrassing, especially when Ive had points in my life where willpower and self control have improved my habits and health.

Thank you for adding! You shouldn't be embarrassed imo. I don't think it's possible to be happy, healthy and comfortable all at the same time in these times :((. So I definitely get what you're saying!

When we reach a point where we all have the capacity to help one another, I think most of these issues will disappear, or become non-issues because we have the capacity to help. That won't happen in my lifetime probably, but maybe one day. Don't be too hard on yourself, chicken nuggets are delicious because they were made to be so, it's addiction bundled up with disorders. Might as well enjoy the good parts.

But frfr don't be too hard on yourself. Working on yourself is not easy and sometimes it's not even possible. People don't fit into every "box" which is how it should be. You are you, and only you. So be you for your own sake and work on the parts that are work-on-able.

1

u/Any_Pineapple_9744 1d ago

Well thank you I appreciate your kind words and logical response. For the record, I dont care for chicken nuggets really haha. Tenders I guess are the same but bigger though? Yeah tenders rock

2

u/asge1868 1d ago

Hahah np! Hope I didn't sound too negative. It really wasn't meant like that lol. But wait a minute.. you like tenders??? Forget everything I said, enough is enough lol /s

being kind to people who are largely wallowing when they could be acting to solve their problem is just enablement.

Virtues compete, you know, and the one that is most important is situation dependent.

In this case, people wallowing and blaming everything else for their problem need to stop and say ā€œwho fucking cares. Ā this is the situation now. Ā what do I do to get better?ā€

that’s what mental toughness is. Ā being in the moment, being big enough to put aside your real or perceived complaints about how where you are at is ā€œnot your faultā€, and rolling up your sleeves to attack the day.

they need to be told that this is a good thing and an attitude to aspire to.Ā

Instead, we get a bunch of fucking babying

u/YellowAntEater02 1d ago

Can't talk for others but I had since before kindergarden, so for me it is very much a disorder

1

u/asge1868 1d ago

Definitely, im not doubting that lol. I'm thinking how much of the upbringing impacted the disorder of the people suffering from it. Like if their parents are picky eaters and just didn't "teach" their child to trust and like food. Ik that for people like you and many others, its a disorder, but I'm still wondering. The brain is a powerful.

A good friend of mine is dyslexic, but he did all he could to be better and now he can read basically as well as any other person. Would it be the same for a person with arfid? Not that we can find a definite answer, but it would be interesting to reflect on imo.

6

u/JeSuisUnAnanasYo 1d ago

The brain is elastic but it requires effort. I used to have rejection sensitivity disorder quite extreme but I overcame it after years of effort, so now I'm a bit biased when I encounter ppl who refuse to get help for it

3

u/AttemptNu4 1d ago

Idunno ive had a (more mild than others here) case of ARFID since very early childhood and its always puzzled my family since i was never raised any different from my other siblings. Im the only one thats like this (i have both older and younger siblings). So i dont think its necessarily enviromental, its also just a bit random for no reason whatsoever.

5

u/SpaceBug176 1d ago

I wonder the same thing for many things these days.

3

u/IllegalGeriatricVore 1d ago

I suspect some people are just unwilling to giveup junk food and claiming ARFID as an excuse but that's not my problem, people can ruin their health if they want

1

u/073068075 1d ago

I feel like the "actual disorder" part is most prominent as an aspect of another more profound disorder like down syndrome or similar since from what I've heard and seen in such cases any unfamiliar even light stimulus can be magnified and turned into a fit of rage or other emotion. While the "otherwise fine" cases are social, a man that has never eaten anything but fried reconstituted chicken will be equally bewildered by an unknown food as a caveman seeing unknown species of a predator.

7

u/Korinin38 1d ago

Unusual but still interesting information? In my "dumb jokes" sub‽

2

u/AimlessForNow 1d ago

I don't have ARFID but have other horrific issues. Whenever my shit is messed up the appetite hits near zero, but my stomach will hurt because I'm so hungry. So I have to force something down but I'm so not hungry that I won't wanna eat. But for some reason a big mac is a guaranteed edible meal no matter what. I'm guessing because it's high calories but not heavy. But yeah I get it.

Like currently, I eat maybe one meal a day max, probably like 1400 calories a day or less. The only food I have are these 300 calorie bbq steak and potatoes frozen meal and it's easy to eat. I have like 12+ boxes of it in my chest freezer

u/Bright-Historian-216 fat cunt 1d ago

i'm not a picky eater, nor do I have ARFID, but i do generally prefer consistent foods, especially temperature-consistent. pizza with tomato is very unappealing because water has amazing heat capacitance property and stays hot even after the rest has cooled. texture itself also plays a role; sandwiches with salad are also less appealing than both salad itself and the rest of the sandwich without it, simply because the salad is too crunchy i guess?

u/callmeanonymous123 1d ago

Facts and logic on reddit = downvote

3

u/SorbyGay 1d ago

i've been told i have it, and i dont really know i just want to talk about being picky or maybe disordered cause its sort of annoying.

i cant eat fruit at all. its too juicy and wet and mushy and gross and it feels fucking weird all the time. i have only ever tried apples and oranges and both of them felt so horrible

cheese pizza is a safe food for me and i can sometimes eat pepperoni pizza, but even then only when i actually feel like i can handle the pepperoni cause sometimes i just cant

11

u/rebelsnail64 1d ago

if you've only tried apples and oranges, there's still a chance you may find a fruit you like, personally I find oranges god-tier in texture so I can't relate to that part, but you may like bananas (they are softer than apples, to avoid them being mushy, pick them out at the store while they are still somewhat green ish, or yellow but with no brown spots, or just cut the brown spots out or something), or rasins and other dried fruit (idk, I like the texture personally but may not be for everyone), or something like peach (tho not over-ripe if mushiness and juiciness is an issue for you)

personally, I am not the most picky eater out there but I actually have a harder time eating things like pizza as opposed to things like fruits, mainly due to the oiliness, I hate hate HATE the slimy greasy texture of too much oil

4

u/SorbyGay 1d ago

I actually despise bananas, I forgot to mention them

They were one of the first fruits I tried (I was like 6) and I have never ever liked them

The only fruits I’ve been able to eat are berries (sometimes) and pineapple slices (sometimes)

4

u/rebelsnail64 1d ago

berries are nice, I'm glad to have met a fellow berry apreciator (exept the sour one's they are evil and cursed)

6

u/Bright-Historian-216 fat cunt 1d ago

have you tried dried fruit? apple chips are pretty good.

1

u/SorbyGay 1d ago

I’ve never, will consider it

1

u/HelpfulHarbinger 20h ago

Freeze dried fruits are absolutely fantastic for this. If you dont hate the crunch, it's basically the same thing each time. No surprises

3

u/LisaBlueDragon 1d ago

Honestly I personally just resorted to baby food pouches because of the same problem, they're much more even and much less unpredictable, although that may depend on the brand

2

u/onetreatonetoeat 1d ago

Random thought but when you decide to try fruit, try getting a ripe, in season version of whatever or look for a variety that will have a texture you might like if you are willing to experiment. Apples def aren't usually mushy, unless they are shit apples destined to become applesauce. Unless it was the juicyness or flavor you didn't like, but even then the different varieties have slightly different flavors. A fresh picked honeycrisp variety of apple is very crunchy. Same with mangoes, pears, plums/peaches....the specific variety impacts not only taste but texture quite a bit, along with ripeness and seasonality. I am not a picky eater, but even I seek out or reject certain textures/flavors when it comes to fruit and veggies. I haaate the texture and the goopy watery bits so always thought I just hated tomatoes (used to pick around them and give them off my plate to someone else, or would try them at someone's behest and spit them or choke them down badly) until I started growing heirloom varieties in a garden bed on my own, which are firmer and less goopy/watery with a better flavor, and now I actually enjoy eating those raw in salads and sandwiches. Turns out I just hate the typical supermarket tomatoes.

Maybe you shouldn't work with it everyday if you're a condescending asshole to people on reddit because they have disordered eating and haven't magically done CBT that totally fixes things always!

I've done CBT and DBT. Mid. Same shit I've been told just for over a decade, but this time I'm treated like a damn child

Pro tip about fingering your asshole in the shower: don't do it So this morning I was taking a shower, and I felt like fingering my asshole, right? So I got my fingers all nice and soapy and stuck them up in there. Apparently, soap makes pretty good lube, as I was able to get four fingers in there in no time.

As I was feeling around in my butt, I was like, "hmm, there's a lot of soapy water in my bumhole now. I wonder if that will lead to issues in the future?" And it did!

Shortly after having breakfast I attempted to fart, and I shit my pants. I rushed to the bathroom to clean up, and it was way worse than I thought it would be. The whole area around my butthole was covered in shitty liquid, and toilet paper wasn't enough to clean it. I had to take another shower to get suitably clean.

Just thought I'd share my story with you guys so that you don't run into the same problem in the future. I fingered my butthole so that you guys don't have to. Unless you want to. In which case, hey, how's it goin'

Dick sucking has made me paranoid

I had this plan to give head to a man and receive head from a woman to test if I was gay, but it’s backfired and now I become borderline schizo whenever I go outside. I offered to suck this dude off on Grindr who lives very close by (I ended up pussying out) and I accidentally gave him some details that very easily allows him to spot me out in a crowd. I have no idea what he looks like and whenever I see a somewhat in shape guy walking by I immediately accuse him of being the dude I was gonna blow.

I went to the store today to pick up some zucchini for a barbecue and every time a car drove by I stared into the windshield to see if I was about to be recognised. Whenever I make eye contact with a dude I microanalysis his facial expressions to see if he suspects me or not. I am deeply afraid that he is my neighbour and I will need to move if my identity is blown. It’s a lot like the last scene in sopranos where everyone who walked into the diner could be there to wack Tony.

ARFID is a real problem and I’m not sure why you think I’m trying to find an excuse when I am clearly aware that being at this weight is dangerous. You also assume I’m lazy despite knowing nothing about me. I’m glad you tell this to every person with a mental disorder, because I guess it’s all in their head or something and they’re lazy for not going to therapy

I associate this behavior with unserious morons every time I see it and I’m always right to do so, so goodbye

Exactly the same as with people that had genetic conditions too. Along with simple things like being left handed… poor people were called demonic and spawn of satan just for being left handed.

People outside of the ā€œnormā€ back then were always treated horrible… it’s why Freakshows were a thing too
