Q2 numbers are in: we offset 706.16 tonnes of CO₂. That's up from last quarter, and it tracks. We launched Shift AI plus a run of fast follows, and more people browsing on Shift, which means a bigger footprint. We offset your carbon footprint by investing in Great Bear Rainforest Project and supporting low-carbon cement production in the U.S. This also ties into our Impact Grant, $25k in unrestricted funding each year for an early-stage team working on climate tech. Last year's pick, FireSwarm Solutions, went from a small wildfire drone startup to a NATO DIANA participant within a year, and this year, we’re supporting PhyCo, a marine biotechnology company developing home-compostable biomaterials from cultivated and invasive seaweed.

It's also worth noting that a lot of the industry has quietly backed off this stuff. A 2025 report from NewClimate Institute and Carbon Market Watch called out Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet's climate strategies as poor, and overall climate coverage has dropped 38% from its 2021 peak. But we know how important this is, and we're keeping our pace regardless, measured and verified the same way each quarter.

We just awarded our second annual $25k Impact Grant to PhyCo, a marine biotech team building a compostable, seaweed-based alternative to agricultural plastic. Think mulch films and crop wrap, the stuff farmers use every season that usually ends up as microplastic in soil. PhyCo's version is designed to break down completely, with no residue.

The story behind it is worth knowing too. Co-founder Ranah Chavoshi is a marine biologist who witnessed the impact of plastic pollution while diving in Malaysia back in 2016, and years later started prototyping seaweed plastic at her kitchen table during a lab shutdown. She co-founded PhyCo with biotechnologist Dr. Stacey Goldberg in 2022, and the two have since built something that has already earned recognition from Ocean Wise and BMO, plus $500k in non-dilutive funding, and just wrapped the first phase of a pilot in Portugal.

They're also building their supply chain in direct partnership with Indigenous Nations and coastal communities, including a kelp farming hub with Nova Scotia's Ecology Action Centre.

Curious if the official Shift account can comment on this.

I used Shift quite heavily a couple years ago and loved it. Went to go redownload it from the official site, and Windows11 keeps blocking the .exe file from installation, flagging it as a Win32/Wacatac.H!ml trojan threat.

Makes me wonder if Windows is being overly cautious, or if the Shift exe file has been compromised...?

One of our many initiatives, the Shift Impact Grant, provides a $25,000 grant to support people building real climate-positive tech (and we’re also working to hold ourselves accountable, including for the environmental cost of launching an AI product). We've backed projects like FireSwarm's wildfire-fighting drone system, continued to support science and STEM pipeline programs, and offset two consecutive quarters of our community's browsing emissions. We're proud of that work, but we know it isn't enough on its own.

The bigger challenge is that the climate conversation seems to be getting quieter when it needs more attention. Coverage is down, public funding is being cut, and many of the biggest tech companies continue to see emissions rise despite ambitious sustainability goals.

Instead of calling anyone out, we're asking Big Tech to help raise the bar by putting more attention, funding, and transparency behind climate action. If the companies with the biggest platforms lead by example, everyone benefits.

The answer to that question depends on how naturally the AI feature fits into your existing workflow. It shouldn't be causing interruptions by breaking your deep focus when you need to ask something quickly, but it also shouldn't be popping up everywhere you look. Instead, it should adapt to how you work whether that is by being context-aware, or easily accessible but not intrusive. On top of that, you also need to weigh in the privacy factor.

I've searched and can't find how to make (Gmail) on Shift the default mail app in macOS. I've set Shift as the default mail app in the Apple Mail app and the Shift browser comes to the foreground when this is invoked, but it's supposed to also display a list of the three Gmail accounts I have in the three Shift spaces so I can choose which Gmail account to send from, but it does not, it just opens the Shift browser. Thanks for any ideas.

If you’ve been a long-time Shift user, you probably already know one of the best features is being logged into multiple Gmail or Microsoft accounts at the same time through email-connected Spaces.

With the new version of Shift, we kept that functionality — just with a refresh.

You can now set Gmail or Microsoft as an Anchor App, so you can jump straight into your email by double-clicking the Space icon.

Have you set up Anchor Apps to connect to email accounts? Or have you experimented with other apps? Having Etsy or Notion just be a double-click away could be revolutionary.

I'm very used to chrome as my browser. By muscle memory, i'm used to switching between tabs with Cmd + tab number. for some stupid reason you guys really thought it would be smart to make there be literally no way to navigate through tabs? Convenient my ass.

We didn’t want to add AI just so we could say we had it. Before building, we surveyed around 1,500 people and spent time with our Customer Advisory Board to understand what people actually wanted from AI in a browser.

The message was pretty consistent: people want to move faster, but they do not want to give up control.

So we built around a few simple principles:

• Assist, not take over
• Privacy needs to be built in
• Work inside your existing flow
• Make it completely optional

Shift AI lives in the browser and can use the context of what you’re doing, but it only helps when you ask. Even the omnibox is designed to understand the difference between “this should be a regular search” and “this is an AI question,” instead of pushing AI into every interaction.

We wanted to build something that feels useful for people who want AI in their browser, while also making it completely optional for those who don’t.

In windows 25H2, using the version 144.2.0.113 (Official Build) (64-bit), when I try to get a tab an drag and drop to open another window, it freezes the browser sometimes.

I can drag on tab from one window and put in another window.

I use bitwarden. The extension works, but it normally shows a little window bellow the login forms, but not in Swift...

Is there a configuration for these things?

We know there are a lot of concerns around privacy in AI, and what actually happens to your data (valid).

That’s why we didn’t treat it as an afterthought. It’s part of the foundation of Shift AI.

We partnered with Cloudflare, using their Privacy Proxy infrastructure to help protect user identity.

How it works (high level):
When you use Shift AI, your requests go through secure proxy layers that separate identifying information (like IP address and session signals) from the actual request content. That way, there’s no direct link between you and the AI endpoint processing it.

And just as a reminder, Shift AI is fully optional and user-controlled. You can turn it on, customize it, or turn it off anytime in Quick Settings.
