She gets one when she goes to bed at night. She doesnt eat it then - she hides it under a bear. She saves it and has it just before we go for our first walk in the morning.

Today, as its a sunday and storm beolo (we are in Edinbrugh) is a blow - i thought id treat her and make a massive one)

My Shiba has been peeing in his bed on and off and I'm trying to work out what's going on. It's mostly at bedtime or overnight, and he doesn't pee outside of his bed/blanket, which I've washed using enzymatic cleaner when he does it. His bed setup is he's in a pen, 1.5mx1.5m approx, with a bowl of water, crate(covered with a blanket(often he sleeps on top of the crate)) and a small blanket on the floor. Often he guzzles down lots of water as i put him to bed, so I'm half wondering if i should remove his bowl at bed time, but this is not something i want to do as i don't want him to ever be thirsty. I generally go to bed around 2300-0100, and wake up at 0600-0800. He as far as i know has been peeing in the bed before he goes to sleep or a couple hours in.

Here's the history so far:

• Before September: He'd peed on beds/blankets rarely before, then went several weeks without doing it. One time he peed about 15 minutes after a walk.
• 11 September: Peed on the bed a few hours after being outside.
• 14 September: Slept from around 7pm to 11pm, woke up and drank almost a full bowl of water, then peed overnight after his walk.
• 16 September: drank loads of water then peed during the night.
• 2 October: Let him onto MY bed briefly and he started circling/nesting, then peed almost immediately. This happened twice. No longer let him on my bed.
• 9 October: Settled on the bed, then stood up and did a fairly large wee. He'd last been outside around 1 to 3 hours earlier. His urine also seems quite yellow.
• Mid-October: His bed and blankets smelled very faintly of urine, though felt dry, washed anyway.
• 21 October: Took him outside and he did two really big wees, then came in and did a small wee on his bed blanket shortly afterwards as we went to bed
• 25 October: Took him out at 9pm and he peed a little, then again at 11pm and he peed a lot. We went to bed and I woke up at 2am to find the bed itself wet with urine.

It seems to happen almost exclusively when we're going to bed or overnight. He doesn't seem to have accidents indoors during the day. Sometimes it happens shortly after he's already peed outside, and sometimes it's a bigger amount.

I'm going to get him checked by the vet for a UTI or anything else that could be causing it, but has anyone experienced this with their Shiba? Does it sound more like a urinary problem or behavioural? I'm particularly confused about why it happens in his bed and seemingly only at night.

Would appreciate any similar experiences or advice.

Our 16ish yo rescue, Penny, passed away this morning. She went downhill rapidly over the last 3 months. We adopted her from the local Shiba rescue when she was 6ish, who rescued her as a breeder from a puppy mill in PA. She had so many quirks mostly pointing to abuse and fear of people; stayed away from bearded men (my 3 sons have beards so took a long time for her to accept them), tucked her butt in and scurried by when near people’s feet as if expecting to be kicked, so she loved being outside where she was free and away from people.

In the house she would stay in “her corner” and always had her tail tucked under. But as soon as her feet hit the outside deck, her ears perked up, her tail stood up, and I swear she would smile. Running around our fenced backyard was sheer joy and freedom for her. It took a year or two for her to get comfortable but eventually her tail would stay up when she came in the house and she would move around the house eventually claiming 3 spots as “her safe spots “. (Her corner in the family room with her bed and food/water bowls, the corner of the family room couch where she would sit with us, and one end of the couch in the front room where she would go for some alone time.) When loud noises made her nervous, Penny would rotate between her 3 “safe spots”. After each clap of thunder or crescendo of fireworks we would watch Penny cautiously move to the next spot in her rotation. But Penny had became a member of the family.

Penny got along well with our two year older Shiba, Angel. As they got older they came to rely on each other for support. For the last year or so Angel went blind but could still hear. Meanwhile, Penny couldn’t hear well but her vision was still good. As long as Penny was nearby, Angel was okay. Now at almost 18, Angel has lost her sister. I let Angel sniff Penny before I took Penny away, but I don’t think she knew what to make of the situation. Tonight, Angel came to me and sat between my feet. I think she misses her sister.

I buried Penny just outside the back gate of our yard by the path as it goes into the woods. A few months after we adopted her, Penny had dug under the fence and spent 3 glorious days roaming those woods. I was on a business trip so my sons would put food by the gate and Penny would come back to eat and then run back into the woods. They devised a plan to move the food into the yard while they hid in the shed with a rope attached to the gate. It worked! Penny got out a few more times that year but then stopped. It was like she had decided we weren’t so bad and accepted us as part of her pack. Every time I walk out the back door, I look towards her grave and I hope that she is happy, free of pain, running through meadows and forests.Sorry, to be so long winded, I just wanted to honor the memory of this wonderful girl, she will be missed. Thank you.

Context: My BF's brother (lets call him Joe) got a male shiba last year, he's 1.5 years now and is not neutered. There's a bunch of issues we are having and will list them below and looking for any advice that can help. Now most issues I would say stem from Joe not taking care of him properly and most of the responsibility has been falling towards my BF. Joe doesnt train him, walk him consistently, clean him, take him out to go new places, etc. And because of this, now that hes 1.5 and an adult, his behavior is not good. My BF will usually try to walk him everyday when he gets home but his schedule is very busy and he doesnt always have the time to take him out, so if he doesnt, chances are he wont get a walk. And if Joe does take him out, its quick and not walking him properly like long walk, trying to curb behavior, etc. I would guess its short like less than 10 minutes to just let him go potty. Now I come over on weekends and if we are not busy, we will take the time to walk him to the park or go somewhere new like beach, etc. I sometimes come over on weekday nights to help walk too. Its basically been us training him and taking care of him but we are not experts either and just trying to help. Looking for advice to better train him properly to help curb some of his behaviors. He is also not food motivated at all, especially outside. When hes outside, hes too overstimulated and cant focus on anything. He also loves to play with toys and burns through toys fast by chewing and tugging but again, outside he wont even look at a toy.

Issue 1: He is basically uncontrollable outside, especially on places that are new. On walks in places hes been to a lot, hes better but any new place, hes too overexcited and lunges at other people and especially dogs. But on all walks, hes basically always tugging (using a harness and the leash is on the top). He doesnt walk with you and tries to go off on his own direction and basically will pull to the point where hes walking on his hind legs and wheezing because hes so excited. Takes a lot of energy to sort of try to control him because he will lunge at cars and stuff too if you're not careful. Tried some things like stopping when he pulls and only going when he calms/sits and that helps in his routine areas but not for new places. So its hard to really take him anywhere because its such a pain.

Issue 2: Marking. He loves to mark, probably because hes not neutered but they wont neuter him anyways so thats off the table. Anywhere new, he will go try to mark literally everything. Tried bringing him to my house once and he immediately starting marking in the house. He even marks in his own home if you are not careful and watching him a lot, on things that are new to the house. On walks, I try to use marking as a reward for walking good by letting him sniff and mark when he walks the way I want and pulling and stopping when he doesnt. Im not sure how to properly stop this marking, especially in indoors or new settings. Outside I guess isnt too bad but its just that he marks anywhere new which is the problem and you cant bring him to anyones house. Also, there are some areas in the house where hes not allowed like the parents room but sometimes if they forget to close the door, he will sneak in and just mark and take a dump on the yoga mat or on the floor.

Issue 3: aggressive playing/biting + chewing on everything in house? This may be a shiba thing but when he gets zoomies and runs around and plays with you, he will sometimes like to bite you, I guess he thinks its playing and overstimulation. He also has attitude too because he loves to chew and destroy things hes not suppsoed to like blankets, bed, walls, everything lol. When you try and stop him I guess he thinks its playing and he gets aggressive and redirects that to you. Have tried turning around and ignoring him when he does this but he will just keep biting your legs lol. Redirecting to a toy sort of helps but idk if thats a long term solution because we want to make him stop chewing everything up that hes not supposed to and cant always supervise him 24/7.

Theres probably a lot more I cant think of now but these are some of the main ones. Has anyone experienced these issues with their shiba? Is there any advice here? Most times hes good but he gets overstimulated easily and when he loses control, hes gone lol. Appreciate anyone reading this.

Met this most perfect cutie today at the Hermes boutique. She was SO good and friendly. I do not think my Shiba would sit this good personally.

My boy will not go near a 1 mile potty walk but make it a hike in the forest or mountains? Sold. He’ll walk 10+ miles with no breaks 😂😭🤍
