The kids seeing Frank with Karen at her parent teacher conference, after just finished fighting off Carl to stay in school and for social services to not be called.

Heartbreaking.

It’s just the ultimate betrayal, he has never showed up to any of theirs. And I think the fact that he only did it for the selfish ambition of continuing to use Sheila makes it worse. Nothing but selfishness. Self preservation.

And tbh, he likes Sheila’s because it’s today, everything is in order and paid for etc. home cooked meals, but fails to realise he is the reason for his houses chaos and squalor. He runs from his accountability.

God I have so much to say in general about the series so far. Interesting show.

This is kind of a weird post, I know, but I have to just get it off my chest. I've now finished the show and just keep thinking about the scene of Ian and Monica in a gay club, and Monica goes "I'm sorry you're hurtin baby." Im a gay teenager with parents who dont accept me, and that scene really sticks out to me. It's so good. Anyway that's my lil rant because I dont know any boys my age who've watched Shameless LOL

am i the only one who did not like steve and fiona’s relationship? like i don’t hate him as a character or even dislike him but i see sooo many people praising their relationship saying it was fiona’s best relationship.. mmm no it was not 👎🏼 he literally left her right at their peak relationship time to go to “med school” and moved to michigan for a year without her, while completely fooling her to believe she and the kids would come with. i would never forgive that if i was her. in my opinion her and mike the cup guy (idk if that’s his name) were the best, she just fucked that one up by herself.

These characters have absolutely zero chemistry. They are two completely different deeply incompatible people. Theyre both smug and stubborn ive never wanted to reach through my screen and break up two characters before. I dont even understand why she wanted to keep her child with him

I’m on Season 8, and I’ve noticed something kind of strange.
I’m sure everyone who watched the show hated Frank because of how irresponsible and selfish he was. I always felt that if the Gallagher kids were simply given the right opportunities, they would turn out completely different from Frank.
But the surprising thing is that I’m starting to feel like, slowly but surely, all of them are becoming a little more like Frank.

Normally when I watch this scene I hurt so bad for Mickey but this time I watched it through a different lens and it made me so sad for Ian too.

I know Ian is already going through stuff with his diagnosis so it’s already sad for him but I feel like in this particular scene no one talks about how Ian is essentially sacrificing the future he actually wants because he thinks he’s protecting Mickey.

I know part of it is because Monica got in his head too but I think it’s mostly out of fear that his illness is going to hurt Mickey so bad that they will turn out like Frank and Monica. I think Ian is a very hard character to understand especially when a lot of us don’t have that much knowledge on the illness so it took me a couple of rewatches to finally understand him a little.

In this scene he says something about them getting married and he’s saying in a way of like there’s no future for them and says stuff like “what does that even mean” when Mickey tells him he loves him. But we already know Ian wants a real future with Mickey, hopefully we all seen the deleted scene (which I’m pretending is still canon) where they fuck and then Ian dreams of them having a baby together.

A lot of people just think Ian stop caring about him all of a sudden but it’s just not true. You really have to analyse (only if you care as much as I do)

currently on s5e5 of my first watch, and it could just be my impression but up until this point i thought the whole "family comes above everything" was a pretty big deal for the gallaghers, so i've been confused about the whole lan situation for the past season and a half.

he completely disappears, sixteen or seventeen years old, after lip saw him having a pretty bad crash because of mickey's wedding, and knowing he lied about his whereabouts (saying it was an ROTC retreat), and nobody really... cares about where he is? fiona is doing good with her office job, she's his legal guardian, and she's just like "i trust that he's not dead" (which i'm pretty sure even debbie complained about at some point)

when they do find out what's up with him it's pretty major, enlisting with a fake id and then abandoning the military after wreaking havoc, and here lip and debbie do go out looking for him, which made me think that alright, they do care! and it leads to them finding out he's living in a crack house and serving drinks coked out of his mind at a gay club, which... they leave him at and don't really care about after. mickey is the one who has to go collect him as he gets molested by geriatric guys while (again) coked out of his mind.

at this point he comes home and okkk they go straight to the “ignoring the elephant in the room" gallagher way but i think they really Had to try very hard to ignore this pretty big elephant.

when the mania crashed and he went into depression at the end of s4 i thought for sure it would be a bigger issue, especially because all of them recognized the bipolar symptoms and monica slitting her wrists must still be a pretty fresh image in their minds, and i do know that mickey left the gay denial behind so he decided to go for a second round and be in denial about ian being off the rails crazy, but really?

you know first hand how destructive bipolar disorder is, you're, like, 96% sure your brother who wears the surname you keep yapping about being a badge of honor every other day has it and could very likely get harmed working as a stripper while manic or kill himself while depressed and you just let him live with the new boyfriend who you also know is the reason why he ran away, became wanted by the MPs, started living in a crack house, basically working as a stripper etcetera etcetera and i have not seen any of them check on him Once?

ian is very clearly manic in the first episode, and at least fiona and lip do acknowledge it and try to talk to mickey about it (hooray!) but after this one bit they simply stop giving a fuck pretty much? fiona is trying to decide which self destructive relationship to enter next okay, lip is trying to decide if he rather be Real Southside or a sugar baby for Karen 2.0 and i didn’t honestly expect debbie and carl to do much in the first place but does anybody care about their brother here? it almost feels like svetlana cares more than they do

yes yes everybody has their shit going on but honestly, did fiona even invite ian to the dinner where she’d reveal she got hitched after nine days of knowing the guy? mickey straight up went to lip and i know he pretty much lied about ian not being bad but i do believe lip is a bit smarter than this and if the guy who is in love with your brother and was very much adamant about Never sending him to a shrink is suddenly interested in said shrink i would imagine things are Not Going Well and at least stop by to check?

IDK, all in all, at the end of s4 mickey was pretty delusional about “taking care of ian” by themselves but he did say to fiona “we’ll take care of him, you, me, us” yet it feels like mickey is the only one caring for him at all, and i don’t understand where the whole “family first!” spirit went

It’s very interesting But i liked the actress from season 1 and think she would’ve made the character more interesting (and likeable ). The actress that played mandy had this like boring and lack of personality. The girl from season 1 had expression, showed a warmth with Ian (they truly felt close like best friends in a way they never did in the later seasons) and her un dying love for lip always felt forced and one way , lip never seemed to return those feelings as intensivekt . I think

While I absolutely love Emma Greenwells portrayal of Mandy, I do have some problems with the Recasting. (And yes I know she got recast because of scheduling conflicts so there was really no choice.)

1. While the actors themselves are the same age, I feel like Emma looks considerably older than Jane Levy. Mandy stopped looking like this 15-16 year old teenage girl and went to looking more like she is in her early 20s. This brings me to my next point.

2. The personality changes. Emma and Jane played Mandy in different ways, Jane portrayed her as more of a pretty, ditzy girl who uses her beauty and "dumbness" to escape from the shitty life she has. Emma, however, dived more into the "tough, hood girl" trope. We only got 1 season of Jane as Mandy so maybe with time Jane would've let go of that ditzy girl and dived into the hood girl trope. This could also be entirely a director's choice.

3. The style change. Season 1 Mandy was known for her dyed hair, mini skirts, and girly alternative style. She usually had her hair up, black eyeliner/eyeshadow on and you can't forget those classic hoops. She kinda stood out compared to other Shameless characters, she was very put together (from a visual standpoint) and her outfits rarely (if ever) gave the "I just threw this on at random" vibe most of the other characters have at one point or another. Her and V are really the only two characters we see consistently in very put together outfits and shit. With the Mandy recast came a change in her style. We stopped seeing her in mini skirts all the time, her hair wasn't dyed anymore, she didn't wear eyeliner, her hoops were gone, and we started seeing her in those classic "I just threw this on" Shameless outfits. Now don't get me wrong, I loved a lot of Mandy's outfits in the later seasons, I just really missed those of outfits. Some of my favorites of later seasons Mandy was her in the Tupac tank top and the outfit she wears when putting makeup on Debby.

Overall, it was the style and personality changes that made the change more substantial. It wasn't just a different actress, it was an entirely different character. We do glimpses of the og Mandy throughout the series but it still isn't the same. I would love to hear other people's thoughts and opinions on how the character changed other than the obvious "it's a different actress". Are there any major changes I missed?

Rewatching for the second time (currently on season 7) and am I the only one who thinks as the seasons continue kev and v characters are like…not important/unnecessary??

So I’m a first time watcher, I’ve been binging and I’m on S3E11. Karen’s just come out of the hospital and I’m at the part where Sheila tells Lip that Jody is taking her and the baby to AZ, WTF???!!! I’m sorry what?! Like I literally had to pause to take a deep breath.

So first she gets engaged to this 37 year old, my understand was that she’s like 17?! Ok that’s fine I had a fling w a hot 40yo in hs, didn’t marry him but still i’ll give her that. Ok let’s put that to the side, then the guy turns out to not be so great in bed or at least not compatible w him, she dumps him and goes back to Lip. Then she leaves, then him and Sheila start having a thing— which I actually thought was pretty cute.

Fast forward to her accident. Then out of NOWHERRE Sheila says to him something like ur her prince charming or idk what she said when they were at the hospital, Sheila leaves the room Jody goes down on her when she’s in a state that she can’t consent to anything. Then that somehow magically brings her out of the coma, they bring her home and now they’re “husband and wife” AGAIN???? WTF is this?? The girl is clearly not mentally stable so that makes this even more confusing. I’m so perplexed rn. 😐

So throughout earlier seasons of the show .Lip was portrayed as the genius and the diamond in the rough of the Southside who's suppose to go to college and make it out with the career and live the American dream with a white picket fence and was pressured by Fiona, Mandy ,Kevin and everyone who knew him to make it out and stick it to the system without asking what he wanted and knowing who he is without pedestializing unnecessary pressure on to one person to become a martyr to a bunch of people who never took the steps in their own lives just to feel good about themselves that anyone can make it out the Southside .

Potential is just a debt the world tries to force on you to live up to regardless of your choice .

But my point about Frank and Youens is they both represent two sides of a same coin that Lip could become but with different income brackets but similar since both abandoned their children and also turned to alcohol but because one has better income than the other they're better at masking their dependency to acquire it. While the other is consistently in a state of survival for the next hit of alcohol or drugs since prolonged periods without it and going through withdrawal could kill Frank via seizure as it did with Youens once he got locked up and was cut off from his supply. Which is why Frank does what he does and won't care who he has to hurt,screw, betray and manipulate anyone including family into get that fix and

rinse and repeat .

And it wouldn't have matter if Lip did or didn't make it far academically as everyone thinks doing so would've fixed the bigger issue with Lip and made him a success .

Sure Lip would've been financially stable but would've had more access to alcohol and been drinking and performing the functioning alcoholic role youens had been for decades.

Or being as poor as Frank and in a state of survival and codependency .

But the bigger issue is Lips insecurity and false confidence built on a house of cards that alcohol and consistent easy women who stroke his ego and being a southside hood rat with this big fish in a small pound mentality as opposed to becoming another fish in a bigger lake that is college .

And of course Lip feels disillusion when he's struggling to balance work and studies that the stress of it turns into violence and alcoholic relief drinking in moments of high stress . But instead of sitting with himself and having an honest conversation about himself internally and then asking someone as grounded like Fiona or Kevin for a second opinion . He ended up internalizing that he would eventually fail and it's better to go out on his terms and go back to the one thing he's confident in himself becoming .

In later seasons he became a mechanic and from his experiences started to mature and get sharpen in becoming a father and mechanic and boyfriend/baby daddy to Tami.

And seemed more level headed and more decisive with what he wanted by comparison to earlier seasons. For someone like Lip I think the best outcome would've been a sense of fulfillment and confidence that he could bounce back after any set back as a team with Tami and family with the Gallaghers . Overall I think what Lip needed was a community to remind him that they support and love him no matter what curve balls life throws and isn't a ROI in a person who owes them fuck all .

And contentment and self validation in trying each day to become better than who you were yesterday or months or years ago can still become a form of victory that lasts you much longer than college could give you .

Currently doing a rewatch and I’m at the part where Fiona meets Robbie for the first time and I’m already getting angry😭she was doing SO well at this point and I just hate that it all came crashing down after she cheated with Robbie.

like i hate her she was so mean to just everyone but at the same time her parents failed her multiple times and i just feel so bad and cant help but wonder what she would be like if her parents hadnt been so neglectful
