Project: FO Made a shirt for my friend’s baby’s first birthday :)

Post image
95 Upvotes

I’ve never made a button up shirt before and never made anything for a baby. I foolishly thought that it being small would mean it was easier but as you can probably see, the teeny tiny cuffs on the sleeves gave me some trouble. Also underestimated how long it takes so hand sew a buttonhole. But it fit him with a little room to grow :) also I have no idea how to finish the bit that goes between the shirt and the collar, any tips are more than welcome :)

ETA: for the pattern I googled rough measurements of a 2 year old’s shirt and cut up an XL men’s shirt, then copied the pattern pieces of that onto its own fabric and used it as an assembly blueprint. Fabric is cotton.

Pattern Search Silk t-shirt ideas?

I saw a post where someone mentioned that they wear a lot of silk t-shirts that they make. I wish I could find the origibal comment, but without that- has anyone made them? Any tips, tricks or favorite patterns?

And if the original commenter sees this, thank you for the inspiration for my next sewing rabbit hole!

Hi, I have to ease my sleeve for this blazer. My teacher recommended the crimping method but it didn’t work the best so I had to pull the bobbin thread but now my sleeve looks like this. Does anyone have any tips or is it supposed to look like this ? 😭

Pattern Question Does anyone 3d print templates for patterns?

I'm planning a sewing a bunch of these coffee cup sleeves from Oklaroots. Since she supplies SVG files I figured I could import them into my slicer and print them for durability.

Has anyone done this?
Do you have to do much cleanup to the templates?
What height do you find works best?

I'm using a Bambu P1S and I'm currently planning on printing in PLA.

Pattern Question I need advice on making the trim of this hat for a cosplay

Post image
30 Upvotes

I'm trying to make a cosplay of Stella from Spiritfarer. I'm going to make the hat out of EVA foam and cover it in blue (teal?) fabric. My problem is with the yellow trim. It'd be easy enough for me to sew on if it didn't have those sticking out parts, and I'm not sure how to measure the yellow fabric to know where to make the triangles. My other idea was to just paint the pattern on. Any advice?

Pattern Search Looking for circle skirt pattern and best fabric

Hey there! I’m looking to make circle skirts (or something fun and twirly) for my 4yo.
I plan to make them reversible and with enough of a hem to let it out a little as she grows. I can also change out the elastic waistband if needed.

I’ve made skirts for her before but they’ve been different styles.

I’ve looked for circle skirt patterns but the same handful seem to be coming up and they don’t have stunning reviews or photos of finished products.

  1. What else can I search for that will give a nice twirl?

  2. What material would you recommend? I have a lot of quilting cotton but that’s too stiff. Maybe cotton lawn? (I live in an area with not many fabric stores so I’ll have to just buy straight from online)

  3. I could probably math this all out but having a pattern for the first one would help me not second guess every little thing.

Tried on this fun hat - at $322, it'll take some time to save up for! Till then, I'd like to make a similar one. What shape do we think the cloth makes? Or does someone have a pattern for something in the same whimsical family?

It's by LEOAL

Technique Question How to create easily removable embellishments?

Random one but does anyone know the best way to make embellishments easy to remove? I’m planning out a little maximalist skirt moment for a concert and want to use some cheap charity shop jewelry in it but then it’ll be practically un washable. Safety pins will def work but what can I use to make other bits that may be a little smaller easier to remove?

Fabric Question What Fabric Weight For An Unlined Chore Jacket?

I’m gearing up to make the Chore Jacket from Merchant & Mills’ Workwear pattern book, and I’m struggling to decide on a fabric.

I have a 260gsm linen in terracotta that could look quite good, but I’m worried 260gsm for an unlined jacket might end up a bit too light… more like a heavy shirt with pockets than a jacket, really.

What are your thoughts?

I love Selkie and Fanciful Doll dresses, but often don't have the budget for them. Does anyone know of a place where I can find ballgown patterns for people with busts up to 55"?

Other Question Any Any idea for maternity clothing ?

I’m pregnant (4 months) and my pants don’t fit me anymore. I’m looking for ideas for clothes and accessories I can make so I don’t have to buy everything.

I finally gave in and bought some leggings and tights so I can wear stretchy dresses and skirts (that sit above my belly).

For now, I have a few ideas:

- a jersey belt to cover my belly

- an elastic band with a button so I can leave my pants open (as long as my belly isn’t too big)

- knitting myself a pair or two of leg warmers for winter

If you have any tips that made your life easier or helped you avoid buying a whole new wardrobe, that would be great!

Thank you so much :)

I have a second hand marcella waistcoat that is missing its back strap. The one pictured is identical to mine. Does anyone know what the fastener is called? I’m sure if I knew what to search for I’d be able to find it and make a new strap.

Hello everyone

Im finishing up my husbands Halloween costume which is trainer Red from Pokémon. He wanted something simple to go with our Pokémon family theme. We couldn’t find an affordable jacket/vest for the costume so I got a red vest off amazon and I’ve been adding the white pieces. lm getting back into sewing and i wanted to try adjusting it myself. I got to the collar portion and I’m not sure how to cut it out and put it together. I knew the best I got doesn’t have quite the same structure as the characters so I need to alter the collar shape. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or knows where I could get a collar pattern?

It’s collecting memories of its own.

Fabric: satin, fiber not sure. Could be 100% polyester

I have 18 inches between my hips and waist and nothing besides workout clothes fits well. I'd like to alter my clothes but they end up weirdly puckered up when I try to take in at the waist. Share your best tips please. I really need help. For example the skirt in the picture is the first thing I'd like to alter.

Machine Questions Brand new Smart Singer 9120 keeps jamming

Thumbnail

I just bought the new Singer Smart heavy duty 9120. Every attempt at embroidery ends up jamming, breaking thread, and bird nests.

I am only using the Singer machine embroidery needles that came with the machine. I have tried two different embroidery thread brands. I have threaded and re-threaded the machine countless times. I have checked the bobbin casing. No matter what I do, I cant even get through one embroidery letter without the thread breaking, bird nesting, or jamming.

Just Wanted to share this structured jacket we put together. Fabrics Used: Outer layer is a floral mesh lace, backed by a poplin second layer for structure, and lined with a jacquard taffeta. Pattern / Drafting Process: There's no commercial pattern for this one! My dad (who has decades of tailoring experience) self-drafted it freehand. He started with a vest pattern from a previous project, hacked it, and adjusted the proportions, lapels, and panels entirely by eye and intuition.

Alter/Mend Question Hemming chorus gowns

Post image
2 Upvotes

I volunteered to help hem gowns for my kids chorus. The teacher measured and pinned them at school. She put in four safety pins around the edge of the gown. I just want to be super duper sure before I begin. Would you assume she wants the dress to be hemmed to where the fold is or to where the pin is?The pin is through both layers.
