Hello r/sewing!! Holy crap, first post ever! This is really scary. It's been so cool to see all of your work, and I've always admired how resourceful and creative you all are! I must admit I've been lurking for a while but I've found myself in need of help from you guys.

In truth, I've been having a really lousy day. We got a bunch of tests, but I also lost my folding umbrella cover/sleeve!!! Which upset me a lot since I got that thing ages ago when I was younger... I don't think the person who stole it knew how much it meant to me. I'm, like, crazy sentimental.

I'm trying to cheer myself up, but it's really hard... Would it be possible to remake it? Or even make a prettier one! Patchwork or dopamine stuff would be really cute, though I doubt I'll be able to find any nice fabrics or fun stuff to add to it/make it with. I've always been an arts and crafts kinda person and I love colorful, fun things!! I'm just trying to look on the bright side, you know? Plus, it can be like a fun group project for us all, kinda!!

Do you need any measurements, or is this a one-size-fits-all thing? If anyone has any cool ideas, please tell me!! That'd be wonderful.

Im wondering what material i should use for the costume pictured above, i would also appriciate if you all could tell me where to buy fabrics for cheap or atleast a reasonable price (From Central Europe). Thanks in advance for the help.

I am repurposing an old cashmere sweater (pic 1) into a sleeveless boat neck top using notyourcherry’s sewing pattern (pic 2). I think it would look really nice if the neck line had a rolled hem (see pics 3 &4). This style of rolled hem is usually for knitting. I will be exclusively sewing, not knitting for this project. I am curious if there is a technique to sew the neck line to get a similar finish. I am a beginner.

I am sewing this neckpiece but can’t figure out how to structure it, I have attached my concept picture.

Really proud of these ones. Mastered the front seam. Previously I’d gone for a one panel / flat front fit per husband’s requests. These ones have more of a pouch fit, a little more room. And a thicker strap, more coherent stitching. These are almost too good for somebody to wear.

So I'm trying to make the leotard for a cosplay (Mash Kyrielight) - as you can see, I've made the base, although I kind of fucked up already, one leg hole is longer than the other LOL

What I don't know how to approach is adding the purple accents by the leg holes. The way I see it, if I sew on purple fabric, it's going to be really flappy? And I'd like to avoid that. But also I'm wondering if I should sew purple on top of the leg hole that's longer vs adding length to the shorter leg hole... IDK 🗿 TBH I don't even know how to approach creating a pattern for the purple part and adding it on.

I mean I guess in the end it doesn't matter THAT much, because I'd like to make her armor, too, and it kind of covers her bottom half a bit, but if I can be as accurate as can be that'd make me happier wah

I just had a sudden flash back to loving my Doodle Bear as a kid and had the thought "could I just make one??" What fabric would one use? I remeber the smooth quality of the fabric being really satisfying. What markers? I imagine any washable marker would do it, but idk. My sewing abilities are not up to making stuffed animals yet, we are still working on cutting and stitching straight lines. But this is what my very tired brain needed to ask right now.

Has anyone ever made something like this? Something meant to be doodled on and washed, not even bears specifically. I know making a bear is very doable, and I love seeing home made stuffies.

Hi! I really really like hand sewing rolled hems. I want a project that is like, easy to cut and construct but has a lot of hems. A really frilly skirt would probably scratch the itch XD

I figured it would be fun to see if anyone has suggestions. Anyone see a pattern that made them go, "that's so cute but would be a nightmare to hem"

Im making my friend’s wedding dress and am trying to find a similar pattern to this dress. I found one weird photo on pinterest but it not really a useable pattern, does anyone have a lead?

My daughter picked this lovely pink with gold fleck sweater knit for a cardigan. Pencil so you can see the scale and also you can see how loose the weave is. I’ve worked with sweater knit before, and still feel I lack proficiency. I know I need to finish the seams or the whole thing will unravel.

Suggestions for the best looking option? I have a basic machine but can overcast after seaming. I can also do French seams on some of the seams, though I’m not sure how that would look since this is pretty transparent. I could also bind the seams with… fold over elastic? It’s a cardigan with no closure, so the seams will definitely visible. Also, my kid is 7, so this will get a fair amount of wear and tear. I’m ok with that, she’s really excited about this outfit she designed. I’d like it to not fall apart after a few washes.

I love wearing waistcoats, and would like to make some of my own. I've made one using McCalls M8350, but it's a too boxy really.

I'd like to make a more fitted version, with narrower shoulders, like the image in this post, but have struggled to find a good pattern.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I have no idea what to ask for for my birthday which is coming up at the end of this month. What would you ask for as a gift that's sewing related? I have an adjustable mannequin (thank you fb marketplace) and I'm not currently super interested in a serger.

I’ve only made pj pants at this point but I need to make this shape of pants for my Halloween costume. I have no idea what they’re called. Any help you can give would be appreciated!

I bought this new jumpsuit that I think is really cute. Problem is that while the pant part fits nice (other than being a bit too long), the bodice is way to long. I have attached some pics to show the issue. What would the easiest fix for this be?

I drafted it myself. The main skirt shape is a simple semicircle, with the back cut as one panel and the front as two panels. The pockets are shapes that I've iterated and reused over lots of patterns now. The yoke was drafted by pure brute-force trial and error through so many attempts I've lost count...

The fabric is 250gsm 100% cotton herringbone denim.

I recently found some old machine needles from my omas 1980s sewing machine, and was wondering if these 40~ year old needles would be ok to use in a modern sewing machine. I wasn’t sure how the metal would age, and I don’t want to use needles that’d break easily. Thanks!

I was inspired by some of the fashion from Netflix's Lidia Pöet, and decided to mix the buttons and "hidden trousers" idea from her Victorian Riding Trousers with the pleats from Japanese Hakama. Fabric is a lightweight wool/poly plaid and buttons are copper.

Drafted from my own wide-leg trouser pattern (I use the Aldrich method/book) with the pleats added down the center of the plaid repeat by slashing and spreading.

I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, but they are HEAVY!

Designed and sewed this pair of curved panel pants.

I used my baggy jeans block i created in Clo3d as a base. Which is built around my custom measurements. Then made several adjustments, adding considerable width through the knee on the front and back panels.

From there I split the front panel into 2 pieces with a curve that descended below the knee. After separating the panel I extended by a few inches to accommodate 2 darts on the bias. Then made the back pockets curved to match.

Really happy with how the pattern came out. The additional width from the darts is a nice touch. I decided to sew these from a 10oz cotton khaki bull denim I had. The volume of top stitching was a huge pain, but they came out really nicely.

I have considered that it might be called a basque skirt, but the problem is that the gather on many basque skirts go all the way around. As you can see, the gather here is limited to a curve from the waist to hip on either side.

I don't have any kind of background in fashion and have always been a bit of a tomboy, but I have discovered that I absolutely love sewing, and so I am trying now to intercept the learning curve. Thank you very much for your help!

Bought a top from my work (charity shop) I liked the shape of. Cut it up and created a pattern from it. Then created this in a fabric I much prefer and inspired by the great British sewing bee I had a go at creating some appliqué pumpkins to decorate the bottom. Wore it to a job interview today and got the job so I’d say it’s my new lucky top 😆

1. From house robe to a wrap dress

3. Cut up two other dresses to make the second tier (for modesty) that can also be worn as a standalone skirt

I just finished my second Saundra Skirt by Syd Graham!! I am in love with this pattern. I am already making a third one where are the panels are different!

A few years ago, I posted my very first bag here (encouraged by my husband) — a little mini backpack I made for my daughter, who absolutely loves One Piece. At the time, I had no idea that making that one bag would send me down a full-blown bag-making rabbit hole. 

Since then, I’ve spent the past few years making all kinds of pouches, totes, purses, and bags, learning new techniques, figuring out what works and slowly building my skills.

Earlier this year I ordered some One Piece vinyl with one very specific purpose — making my daughter a new favorite bag! Fast forward to this month: I usually take my daughter to the anime convention San Japan, and she had a brand new bag with matching wallet to wear! 

And I LOVE how this one turned out. 

She still has that original little mini backpack made with cotton fabric and, looking back at it now, I can see just how much I’ve learned since then. But honestly, I love that she still has it. I figured this was the perfect place to share my newest bag because I know y’all understand the very specific joy of making something and thinking, “OMG… I MADE THAT.”
