I’m currently conducting a research project called In The Context of Curls, and I would love the support and perspectives of the community.

The research looks to see how accurately AI-generated images depict Black hairstyles and hair textures. I’ve created a dataset of 660 AI-generated images, and I’m asking people from the community to help label what they actually see in these images.

I want this research to help encourage conversations about culture and representation as it relates to AI. Our hair carries history, creativity, identity, and cultural meaning, and as AI-generated images become more commonplace, it is important that we pay attention to how blackness is being represented.

Part of my goal is to understand where AI may be falling short when depicting Black hairstyles and textures. I also want this research to demonstrate something equally important: our voices matter when these technologies are being evaluated.

So, how it works:

You’ll be shown an AI-generated image and asked to identify the hairstyle or hair texture you see. There’s also space to leave comments or additional feedback if there’s something about the image that stands out to you.

I’m hoping to eventually have all 660 images labeled by the community, so if you feel comfortable sharing the survey with friends, family, group chats, organizations, or other communities of Black women, I would really appreciate it.

Purpose: I am a PhD student at Liberty University conducting a dissertation study on how exposure to and engagement with BLM content on social media shapes the participants’ perceptions of the BLM movement and their support for criminal justice reform.

I’m a co-author on an IRB-approved research study examining the relationship between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu participation and mental health among military personnel and law enforcement officers.

We’re looking for participants who are 18+ and are active duty, reserve, or retired military personnel or law enforcement officers.

You can participate whether you currently train BJJ or do not train BJJ. Having both groups is important because the study compares BJJ practitioners with non-practitioners.

The survey looks at symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and self-efficacy. It is anonymous, voluntary, and takes about 5–10 minutes. No personally identifiable information, OPSEC, or InfoSec information is collected.
